Volkswagen Touareg (2014)
Volkswagen Model
General information and overview
The 2014 Volkswagen Touareg stands as a midsize luxury SUV tailored for India with its 2967cc 3.0-litre V6 TDI diesel engine producing 242 bhp at 3800-4400rpm and 550 Nm torque mated to an 8-speed automatic and AWD, seating five comfortably with leather seats, powered front adjustments, lumbar support, and dual-zone climate control. Its four-corner air suspension with electronic damping conquers bad roads effortlessly, paired with cruise control, auto headlamps, and park sensors for urban ease. Dakar heritage underscores off-road capability with 7,700 lbs towing, while simple yet luxurious cabin offers good visibility and low noise. ARAI mileage of 12.08 kmpl (real-world 8-10 kmpl) suits diesel buyers, and at used prices of Rs 15-25 lakh, it delivers superior ride over flamboyant rivals, making it my pick for balanced luxury, performance, and costs in India's diverse conditions.
The 2014 Volkswagen Touareg I review here is the third‑generation‑era V6 TDI with an eight‑speed automatic, full‑time AWD and adjustable air suspension that gives it composed ride quality and genuine towing capability. Interior packaging centres on comfort rather than ostentation: supportive leather seats, logical switchgear and solid materials, plus equipment that was premium for its time. The drivetrain produces strong torque for effortless overtaking and highway cruising, while the automatic is smooth and unobtrusive. Key trade‑offs in India are ownership economics—diesel V6 servicing, potential complexity of air suspension and fewer independent specialists for high‑end Volkswagen models in smaller cities—so used‑car buyers should prioritise a clean service record, a pre‑purchase inspection and clarity on past diesel‑emissions remediation. Overall, I consider it a refined, capable long‑distance SUV for buyers who value ride comfort and build quality over cheap day‑to‑day running costs.
Expert opinion and recommendation
I find the 2014 Volkswagen Touareg a refined luxury SUV that excels in blending German engineering with everyday usability in India, where its 3.0-litre V6 TDI engine delivers 242 bhp and 550 Nm of torque through an 8-speed automatic, making it swift for highway overtakes despite some turbo lag. Its four-corner air suspension smooths out pothole-ridden roads brilliantly, offering supportive seats for five and a towing capacity up to 7,700 lbs ideal for trailers or boats. In India, I appreciate its subtle presence over flashy rivals, with features like cruise control, auto hold, and park distance control enhancing long drives from Mumbai to Goa. Fuel efficiency hovers around 8-12 kmpl ARAI, realistic for diesel in mixed conditions, keeping running costs manageable. While dieselgate affected availability, used models remain solid buys if serviced well, outperforming body-on-frame SUVs in ride comfort without sacrificing off-road prowess proven in Dakar rallies. I recommend it for buyers seeking luxury without ostentation, though maintenance at VW dealers can add up; it's a smart choice for discerning families prioritizing quality over outright performance.
I find the 2014 Volkswagen Touareg to be a compelling choice if you prioritise a composed ride, strong diesel torque and a deliberately understated premium cabin; the V6 TDI and eight‑speed automatic deliver smooth, relaxed progress with surprising mid‑range shove for overtakes while the air suspension soaks up Indian road imperfections better than most rivals. The Touareg feels more like a high‑quality long‑distance cruiser than a flashy status SUV — controls are logical, seats are supportive for long trips and the fit‑and‑finish holds up well for its age. Ownership caveats I would weigh heavily are diesel‑specific service/parts costs, potential complexity and spares availability outside major metro service centres, and the need to check for any diesel‑emissions programme history on individual cars. If you value refined cruising, towing capability and a premium, low‑key presence on the road, I would recommend the Touareg; if you need the cheapest, simplest running car or maximum dealer support in smaller cities, I would steer you to more mainstream alternatives.
Recent news and announcements
The 2014 Volkswagen Touareg saw the introduction of the R-Line trim, which added a sporty flavor to the midsize luxury SUV. This trim included features like 20-inch alloy wheels, a unique front bumper, and a rear diffuser. The R-Line also got LED taillights and a hands-free, foot-activated power liftgate. I think this trim really elevated the Touaregs appeal to those looking for a blend of luxury and sportiness.
For the 2014 model year, the Volkswagen Touareg received several updates, including the addition of a top-view parking camera system on the Executive and Hybrid models. This system provided a 360-degree view to help with parking and maneuvering in tight spaces. Additionally, most versions of the Touareg now came standard with keyless entry and ignition. This enhancement made the vehicle more convenient and user-friendly.
The 2014 Volkswagen Touareg was praised for its safety features, including standard traction and stability control, antilock disc brakes, and hill hold assist. It also came with front side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Touareg its top rating of Good in all crash-test categories. I believe these safety features made the Touareg a reliable choice for families.
The 2014 Volkswagen Touareg offered a range of engine options, including a gasoline V6 and a diesel V6. The TDI diesel engine was particularly notable for its fuel efficiency, offering up to 29 mpg on the highway. This made the Touareg a good option for those looking for a balance between performance and fuel economy.
Volkswagen celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Touareg with the introduction of the X Special Edition for the 2014 model year. This special edition came with unique features such as 19-inch alloy wheels, a moonroof, and a premium sound system. It was a way for Volkswagen to commemorate the models success and appeal to loyal customers.
Pricing details and changes
In India, the 2014 Volkswagen Touareg launched at Rs 58.5 lakh ex-showroom Delhi around 2012-2014, but by 2025 in the used market, expect Rs 15-25 lakh ex-showroom equivalent depending on mileage, condition, and location like Delhi or Mumbai, with lower variants around Rs 18 lakh and higher-spec ones nearing Rs 22 lakh from certified pre-owned dealers. On-road prices then add 10-15% for registration, insurance, and taxes, pushing totals to Rs 20-30 lakh; for instance, a well-maintained Mumbai unit might hit Rs 28 lakh on-road including RTO fees around Rs 2-3 lakh and comprehensive insurance at Rs 1-1.5 lakh annually. I view this as excellent value in India's luxury used SUV segment, undercutting contemporaries like Range Rover Evoque or Mercedes R-Class equivalents, offering premium air suspension and AWD for less. Running costs stay reasonable with diesel efficiency, but factor Rs 50,000-80,000 yearly for VW servicing; it's a buyer's market now post-dieselgate, so negotiate hard on low-mileage examples under Rs 20 lakh on-road for hassle-free ownership aiding your decision.
In India the 2014 Touareg originally retailed in the premium SUV bracket and used examples today (condition, service history and ownership transfer issues vary) typically trade well above mainstream SUVs because of their spec and diesel V6; expect ex‑showroom equivalent pricing in the used market to range substantially depending on kilometres and maintenance—commonly seen asking prices in major metros fall in the higher lakhs (mid to upper segment of the luxury used market) and an on‑road cost will add registration, insurance and transfer fees which can be a significant percentage of the asking price in many states. When assessing a specific car I focus on the documented service history (timing‑belt/chain condition, suspension maintenance), warranty or extended cover availability, and likely immediate maintenance spend — these often influence the true on‑road acquisition cost more than the headline asking price. Factor in higher diesel V6 servicing, potential air‑suspension repairs and the possibility of locating genuine parts when budgeting the purchase in India.
Fuel efficiency information
I rate the 2014 Touareg's 8.7-12 kmpl ARAI mileage realistic at 7-9 kmpl in Indian city traffic and 10-13 kmpl highways with its 3.0 TDI, beating thirstier petrol rivals. Diesel keeps running costs low at Rs 90/litre, totaling Rs 8-12/km versus Rs 15+ for petrol SUVs, making it viable for 20,000 km/year users despite premium fuel needs.
Real‑world highway mileage for the 3.0 TDI in India tends to be significantly better than city figures; expect mid‑teens kmpl in mixed use and higher on long highway runs, but urban stop‑start driving will drop economy and increase running cost due to diesel V6 thirst and heavier curb weight. If low running cost is a primary concern, consider lower‑powered diesels or SUVs with simpler engines; if long‑distance comfort and torque matter more, the Touareg remains sensible.
