Touareg is the only SUV of Volkswagen available in India which was launched four years back. Now, this SUV is in its second generation and aims for even better results. Let’s know more about this SUV in detail.

Exterior

The new age Touareg has received major exterior changes. This SUV has become much wider, taller and longer than before which adds to the visual bulk of this car. The front styling of Touareg indicates towards the futuristic styling of VW which can also be seen in their other cars. The edgy day time running LED headlights add sporty character to this car while its twin layered chrome finished front grille makes it look elegant. The restyled bumper with multi-layered air dam and air-inlets look aerodynamic at its front. The round shaped fog lights are placed in the black colored lower section of its bumper. The wide bonnet sits on the top of its front grille which leads to its big front windshield. The high ground clearance, silver finished roof rails and bulgy wheel arches of Touareg makes it look macho when seen from either side. The new design of alloy wheels also complements the look of this car. Move to the back and you will surely miss the characteristic centrally mounted rear spare wheel of Touareg as we do. The square shaped rear glass looks catchy with sporty spoiler and wiper. The compact boot gate and tail lights also look attractive at the back.

Interior

The highly sophisticated cabin of Touareg instantly makes you realize that you have stepped in to a German car. The fit and finish inside this car is really commendable and everything looks well positioned. The partly wooden and leather finishing on its three spoke steering wheel gives it a unique look. The door fabrics and wood finishing makes it feel up-market. The dual tone colors also add premium touch to this car. The big sun-roof further enhances the aura inside. The cabin now feels far more spacious than before and offers ample amount of knee, shoulder and head room to its all five passengers.

Comfort and Convenience

Touareg features 4-zone climate control, remote unlocking for rear seats with centre arm rest,4-way electrically adjustable steering wheel, electrically adjustable front seats with memory function, power windows and keyless entry etc.

Dashboard and Storage

The dual tone dashboard comes with usage of top quality of plastic and wood material. This dashboard is quite soft to touch and makes it look up-market. This dashboard features an air-cooled and lockable glove box and an integrated utility tray with cover. The car also has door pockets and moveable storage compartment at front. Touareg has an acceptable boot capacity of 580 litres.

Music System

The central console comes equipped with a touch screen audio system. It has a 6 CD changer with MP3 and MP4 compatibility. This audio system is supported by eight powerful speakers. The music system also allows direct connectivity of your musical gadgets via Aux-in and USB ports. Bluetooth connectivity with voice command activation is also a vital feature in this car. Audio and Bluetooth controls are mounted on its steering wheel.

Engine and Gearbox

The Indian spec Touareg is powered by a 3.0L turbocharged V6c diesel engine. This DOHC engine churns out a maximum power output of 245 bhp at 4400 rpm. The torque output of this 4-stroke liquid cooled engine is of 550 Nm which ranges from 1750-2250 rpm. This engine is served with an eight speed automatic transmission.

Acceleration and Performance

Looking at its less power and heavy weight specifications, you might underestimate Touareg but as soon as you press its throttle, its massive amount of torque comes in to play and it surprises you with its powerful performance. This heavy giant reaches 0-100km/hr in less than 7.5 seconds and easily crosses the speed of 200km/hr which makes it even faster than other light weight sedans. It’s a very refined diesel engine which makes less noise and linearly supplies power to all wheels of Touareg. The well-spaced gear ratios give you incredible off road as well as high speed cruising experiences.

Volkswagen Touareg Mileage and Safety Features

Touareg gives you an overall fuel economy of around 10km/ltr. VW has stuffed this SUV with safety features like 8 airbags, ESC, child lock for rear doors, rear parking camera and engine immobilizer.

Suspension and Brakes

Touareg has a five way adjustable double wishbone air suspension system at both ends. The braking system of this SUV features ventilated disc brakes on all wheels, ABS with EBD and brake assist.

Ride and Handling

Touareg shares its platform with Audi Q7 and feels equally competent. It’s a perfect on/off road vehicle which impresses you with its ride and handling on all terrains. The light handling of Touareg makes it easy for you to ride it in city traffic. The electric steering gives you positive feedback and steers accurately. The adjustable suspension system can give this vehicle a ground clearance of 300mm which enables you to take on any challenge on any terrain. The four wheel drive system works perfectly and gives you immense power. The wide tyres and long wheelbase of 2893mm keeps this heavy machine grounded around corners and there is minimal body roll. Short overhangs of Touareg avoid body damage while you take it off road and also give you clear view of roads in city traffic.

The only variant of Touareg is available in seven different colors and comes with a warranty of 2 years/unlimited kilometres.

Verdict

New Touareg is priced at INR 58.50 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi (approx., may vary)). The new looks and features of Touareg are really impressive. The 3.0L V6 diesel engine also makes it one of the most powerful premium SUVs available in India. Moreover, the magnificent ride and handling Touareg on all terrains proves to a big advantage for this car. Undoubtedly, it’s a complete value for money car from VW which will surely become a tough competitor for some of the prestigious SUVs in India.
