General information and overview

The 2014 Volkswagen Phaeton, a flagship luxury sedan tailored for India, boasts a 3597cc V6 petrol engine with 276 bhp and 370Nm torque, paired to a 6-speed automatic and 4MOTION AWD for stable highway cruising. Its air suspension excels on Indian roads, minimising bumps for five passengers amid lavish leather seats, 12-way adjustments, four-zone AC with sun-sensing, sunroof, Bluetooth telephony, and a fridge. Safety includes ABS, EBD, airbags, and tyre monitors, with a 500-litre boot suiting family trips. Though sales waned due to high costs and rivals, I see it as a hidden gem for used buyers craving S-Class poise at a fraction, provided you verify service history to dodge complexity pitfalls.

The 2014 Volkswagen Phaeton stands as a flagship luxury sedan tailored for India with a 3597cc V6 petrol engine churning 276 bhp and 370 Nm torque through a 6-speed Tiptronic automatic and 4MOTION AWD, ensuring superior grip on wet monsoon roads and effortless overtakes. Its air suspension delivers plush ride comfort over speed breakers, while the lavish cabin seats five with ample legroom, massaging 12-way adjustable leather seats, a refrigerator, Bluetooth phone integration and 150+ tech functions including voice commands and tyre pressure monitors. Four-zone AC adapts to sunlight for individual comfort, complemented by electronic sunroof, rain-sensing wipers and a 500-litre boot for practicality. Safety includes ABS, EBD, airbags and stability control. Though discontinued due to tepid sales against badge-stronger rivals, I see it excelling for rear-seat buyers valuing exquisite build, silence and features over fuel efficiency—ideal used buy at deflated prices for India's elite seeking discreet opulence.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

I find the 2014 Volkswagen Phaeton a compelling choice for those seeking understated luxury in India's premium sedan segment, delivering Bentley-like refinement with its air suspension that glides over pothole-ridden roads and a 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine offering 276 bhp and smooth 6-speed automatic shifts. The cabin stands out with four-zone climate control that adjusts for sun position, massaging seats, a refrigerator, and 500-litre boot, ensuring rear passengers travel in supreme comfort during long drives from Mumbai to Pune. Safety shines with ABS, EBD, multiple airbags, and four-wheel drive, while features like voice commands and tyre pressure monitoring add practicality. However, its heavy build leads to noticeable body roll in corners, and as a discontinued model, maintenance poses risks with scarce spares and high costs, making it ideal for buyers prioritising chauffeur-driven opulence over spirited driving. At used prices, it undercuts rivals like Audi A8, offering exceptional value if you source a low-mileage example from reputable dealers, though I'd advise budgeting for potential electronic gremlins common in complex VAG platforms.

I find the 2014 Volkswagen Phaeton a compelling choice for those seeking understated luxury in India's premium sedan segment, delivering Bentley-like refinement at a fraction of the cost through its air suspension that glides over pothole-riddled roads and four-zone climate control that keeps all passengers perfectly comfortable regardless of Mumbai's humidity or Delhi's heat. Powered by a 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine producing 276 bhp and 370 Nm, mated to a smooth 6-speed automatic and standard 4MOTION all-wheel drive, it offers effortless highway cruising and stable handling despite its hefty build, with a 500-litre boot ideal for family trips. Safety shines with ABS, EBD, multiple airbags and anti-skid systems, while the exquisite leather-wrapped interior boasts voice commands, Bluetooth telephony, a refrigerator console and electronic sunroof for true opulence. Though discontinued and with low sales due to rivals like Audi A8, I recommend it for buyers prioritizing rear-seat luxury and build quality over badge prestige, especially used examples now heavily discounted—perfect if you value silent, spacious motoring without the running costs of German flagships, making it a smart buy for long-term ownership in India's diverse conditions.

Volkswagen reflected on the Phaetons legacy, highlighting its impact on the brands premium aspirations. The Phaeton acted as a halo model, influencing future Volkswagen designs, such as the Touaregs Innovision Cockpit. I think the Phaetons influence can still be seen in many modern Volkswagen models.
July 8, 2022
The 2014 Phaeton was also notable for its use in the development of other vehicles. For example, 10 Phaeton R60 models were built as test mules for the Bentley Continental drivetrain development. This collaboration showcased the engineering prowess behind the Phaeton.
July 7, 2022
Despite its luxury features and comfortable ride, the 2014 Phaeton did not achieve the sales figures Volkswagen had hoped for. This led to a re-evaluation of the models place in Volkswagens lineup, ultimately contributing to its discontinuation in 2016. I believe the Phaetons high production costs were a significant factor in this decision.
December 31, 2014
In 2014, Volkswagen continued to enhance the Phaeton with features like self-luminous number plates using electroluminescence technology, although this was a short-lived addition. The cars exclusive status and luxurious amenities kept it appealing to a niche market.
June 15, 2014
The production of the W12 Phaeton was eventually halted due to the discontinuation of the ZF 5HP24 5-speed transmission line. There were rumors that the last few W12 Phaetons used rebuilt transmissions when new ones were no longer available. This marked the end of an era for the W12 variant.

Price

Pricing details and changes

In India, the 2014 Volkswagen Phaeton's ex-showroom price originally hovered around ₹76.28 lakh, but massive discounts like ₹25 lakh in 2011 brought it down significantly, positioning it competitively against Audi A8 and Mercedes S-Class. Today, as a discontinued model, used examples from 2014 fetch ₹20-40 lakh depending on condition, mileage, and location, with on-road prices adding 10-15% for registration, insurance, and taxes in major cities like Delhi or Mumbai, pushing totals to ₹22-46 lakh. I view this as a steal for the luxury it packs—air suspension, V6 power, and opulent interiors—far surpassing what that money buys in newer mid-luxury sedans. However, factor in steep depreciation and import-like servicing costs; spares are tough to source, often requiring VW's network or aftermarket hacks, inflating ownership expenses. For budget-conscious buyers eyeing a flagship experience, hunt certified pre-owned units under ₹30 lakh—they deliver unmatched rear-seat luxury without the new-car premium, aiding a smart buying decision if maintenance is planned for.

In India, the 2014 Volkswagen Phaeton's ex-showroom price originally launched around ₹76.28 lakh, positioning it competitively against Audi A8 and Mercedes S-Class, but massive discounts of up to ₹25 lakh were offered by Volkswagen India around 2011 to boost sales amid low demand, effectively slashing it to under ₹50 lakh at dealerships. On-road prices, factoring Delhi or Mumbai registration, insurance, RTO taxes and fastag, would have pushed it to approximately ₹85-90 lakh new, though regional variations applied—higher in high-tax states like Karnataka. Today, as a discontinued model since over a decade ago, used 2014 Phaetons trade in the ₹20-40 lakh range depending on mileage and condition via platforms like CarTrade or private sellers, offering exceptional value with once-premium features now at mainstream luxury prices. I view this as a golden buying opportunity for savvy Indians; the depreciation works in your favor, delivering flagship tech without the hit, but factor in high import duties on spares pushing maintenance 20-30% above rivals—still worthwhile if you snag a low-km unit under ₹30 lakh for chauffeured luxury without new-car premiums.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

I note the 2014 Phaeton's 3.6L V6 petrol returns 8.5-12.8 kmpl in India, dropping to 6-8 kmpl in city traffic with its weight and power. Running costs are high at ₹10-12/km on premium fuel, unsuitable for mileage-focused buyers, but justifiable for low-usage luxury seekers valuing comfort over efficiency.

I note the 2014 Phaeton's 3.6L V6 petrol returns 8.5-12.8 kmpl in India, dipping to 6-8 in city traffic but hitting 10-12 on highways; high running costs from premium fuel and complex electronics make it unsuitable for mileage-focused buyers, so opt if luxury trumps ₹15-20/km expenses.

Professional reviews and expert opinions on Volkswagen Phaeton (2014)

Volkswagen hasn’t been particularly popular with luxury saloon cars but that was until the Volkswagen Passat and Phaeton came in to the market.

It has been two years since Volkswagen Phaeton was introduced to India and the saloon class sedan has performed remarkably well in the market. The reason why Volkswagen decided to bring Phaeton to the market was that Mercedes Benz desired to taken Volkswagen head-on on its European concourse with its A-Class. Volkswagen Phaeton’s closest enemy is Audi A8 which has been in India for a longer time than Phaeton. This saloon sedan comes equipped with one of the most state-of-the-art interior features which make Volkswagen live up to its repute. Let us look into various aspects of Phaeton that make it an arch-enemy of Audi A8.

Exterior

Volkswagen surely lives up to its name and this can be seen by a mere glance at Phaeton which covers every design facet of a perfect saloon class luxury sedan. Coming to the front fascia, Bi-Xenon headlights have been fitted which come equipped with cornering lights that are quite adaptive. Additionally, an automatic headlight cleaner has been fitted to the system which intelligently senses the density of froth or dust on the headlights and wipes it off accordingly. The streamline bumpers have chrome trim on them and the windshield has been made to be aerodynamic in order to make sure that there is no resistance on the part of air which the car is in motion. The chrome package on the exteriors gives Phaeton a very aggressive look for both the front fascia as well as the rear. The fog lamps have been fitted below the headlights and give sufficient luminance to see through dense fog or even smoke. It is usually being said that the exoskeleton of Phaeton is as strong as that of a muscular SUV. A sun roof has been generously provided and it operates electronically. Coming to the rear, a protective windshield has been provided on the rear in order to prevent sunlight from entering the cabin. Additionally, Phaeton comes with two twin-chrome exhaust tips and a very artistic set of tail-lights.

Interior

When it comes to interiors, we must say Volkswagen has done us all a service. Phaeton has one of the most exquisite set of features inside the cabin which leave no stone unturned for definitive luxury. The air-conditioning system is smartest above all as it precisely measures the position of the sun as well as intensity of light and therefore, adjusts the temperature of the cabin according to each and every passengers individually. This ensures that all the passengers are equally comfortable in the no matter how hot it is outside. Another exquisite feature is what they call the RNS 810 Radio Navigation System which has an 8-inch touch panel having multiple colours. Almost the whole of interiors has been done up using “Sensitive Classic Style” leather upholstery. The steering wheel boasts of having multiple features and is covered in high-quality wood and same goes with the gear knob. Gear can be changed from the steering paddle as well and this is the same manner in which gear is changed in Formula 1 racing cars. An automatic dimming rear-view mirror has been generously fitted and most of the cabin boasts of grain-wood décor.

Comfort & Convenience

Those in India who go for high-end luxury sedans primarily look to the comfort aspect of the car and this is the reason why Phaeton is revered by Indian customers. This 5-seater comes equipped with illuminated sun visors, automatic climate control and vanity mirror for passengers, rain sensors as well as outside door mirrors which can be electrically adjusted and folded as per the convenience of the driver. The sunroof as it has been pointed out in the previous section operates electronically and the air conditioner makes sure that the temperature in the cabin remains uniform for all the passengers. Volkswagen Phaeton can accommodate 5 passengers at a time comfortably. Additional comfort features include telephone set-up with Bluetooth and a refrigerator that has been fitted into the console. The luggage box of Volkswagen Phaeton has a total capacity of 500 litres. Leg room is ample and most of the controls are maintained electronically.

Music System

Volkswagen Phaeton comes with a 6-CD Changer as well as a radio, both of which can be operated from the 8-inch screen interface. The infotainment system can store MP3 and wma audio format files and has a good storage capacity. USB connectivity is also available and additionally, one can connect i-pod to an 8-channel amplifier. A total of 10 loudspeakers have been placed all around the cabin which ensures amplified surround sound.

Engine & Gearbox

Volkswagen Phaeton might score a lot when it comes to judging the exteriors as well as interiors, but what lies beneath the hood is something that surely makes it the epitome of engineering. Phaeton is powered by a 3.6 Litre V6 engine that runs on petrol and has the capability of pumping maximum power of 280 Bhp at 6250 rpm along with a peak torque of 370 Nm at 3500 rpm. For ease of driving experience, the engine is paired to an automatic six-speed transmission. This engine makes Phaeton accelerate from 0-100 Km/hr in 6.1 seconds with a top speed of 240 Km/hr.

Safety Features

Volkswagen never compromises with safety and thus have provided a total of 8 airbags out of which two are for front, two for back and four for side. Early crash sensors activate all of these airbags and ensure that the passengers remain safe and sound. Additional safety features include ESP, ABS, Fog lamps, and monitored anti-theft alarm system, parking sensors, EDL, TCS, ASR and many more. In case if there is an accident, then the wipers on the windshield cloak automatically under the bonnet in order to prevent any injury from them.

Shades Available in Volkswagen Phaeton

Volkswagen Phaeton is available in 6 shades: Campanella White, Cairo Grey, Arabesque Silver, Mazeppa Grey, Tarantella Black and Luna Blue.

Verdict

The interiors as well as exteriors along with ergonomics make Phaeton a perfect luxury car but the downside is that Volkswagen cars as usual are exorbitantly priced and come with less mileage (10 Kmpl).
