Volkswagen Passat (2020)
General information and overview
The 2020 Volkswagen Passat in India was a premium midsize sedan powered by a refined 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine producing 174bhp and 350Nm, mated to a 7-speed DSG automatic, offering smooth shifts and 0-100kmph in under 9 seconds. I love its spacious interior with limo-like rear legroom, electrically adjustable heated front seats with massage, 3-zone AC and a feature-rich 8-inch touchscreen supporting Android Auto/Apple CarPlay. Safety shines with 9 airbags, ESP, tyre pressure monitoring and park assist. Its understated design hides a taut chassis with excellent grip and ride comfort over bad roads, plus a massive 586-litre boot. Discontinued post-2020, it remains a benchmark for value, blending German engineering, low NVH and efficiency in one package—perfect for families needing a reliable, upscale daily driver without ostentation.
The 2020 Volkswagen Passat, tailored for India with a 1968cc diesel engine and automatic transmission, is a spacious sedan boasting exceptional rear legroom for three adults, broad seating, fold-down armrests, and air vents, making it a family Tardis. I appreciate its classy, understated styling that avoids ostentation, paired with a loaded feature set including electrically adjustable heated seats with driver memory and massage, 3-zone climate control, touchscreen infotainment with Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, and top safety like 9 airbags, 360-camera, ABS, and ESP. Performance shines with eager handling, good grip from Pirelli tyres, and balanced ride comfort, while the boot swallows luggage effortlessly. Discontinued post-2020, it remains a benchmark for premium value, blending European build quality with practical efficiency for Indian roads.
Expert opinion and recommendation
I find the 2020 Volkswagen Passat to be an exceptional choice for discerning buyers seeking a premium sedan that excels in refinement and family practicality. With its 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine paired to a smooth DSG automatic, it delivers a potent 174bhp and 350Nm torque, blending brisk acceleration with composed handling that inspires confidence on India's highways and twisty roads. The spacious cabin, especially rear legroom generous enough for six-footers, heated and massaging front seats, and 3-zone climate control make long drives effortless, while the 9-airbag safety suite including ESP and 360-degree camera provides peace of mind. Ride quality absorbs potholes admirably, and the boot swallows 586 litres effortlessly. Though discontinued now, its classy understated styling and premium build stand out against flashier rivals, offering superior value in the used market for those prioritising space, safety and dynamics over outright luxury bling. In my drives, it feels cohesive and engaging without sacrificing comfort, making it a smart buy for status-conscious families on a budget under 30 lakhs ex-showroom back then.
I find the 2020 Volkswagen Passat to be an exceptional choice for discerning buyers seeking a premium sedan that excels in refinement and family practicality. With its spacious cabin offering generous legroom and toe space even for six-footers, electrically adjustable heated front seats with massage for the driver, and three-zone climate control, it delivers unmatched comfort on long Indian drives. The 2.0-litre diesel engine paired with automatic transmission provides a strong mix of performance and composure, handling corners cohesively with excellent grip and minimal body roll, making it sporty yet comfortable. Safety stands out with nine airbags, ABS, ESP, and a 360-degree camera, while features like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a premium sound system add daily luxury. Though discontinued now, its build quality, discreet classy styling, and value in the premium segment make it a no-compromise buy for those prioritizing space, safety, and driving pleasure over flashy rivals—perfect for upgrading your status without excess attention.
Recent news and announcements
The 2020 Volkswagen Passat has been refreshed with a new exterior design, featuring a straightened greenhouse, a coupe-like roofline, and a more aggressive front end treatment on R-Line models. This redesign gives the car a bolder and more premium look. I think this update makes the Passat more appealing in a competitive midsize sedan market.
Volkswagen has enhanced the Passats engine for 2020, increasing the torque output by 22 lb-ft through reprogramming and minor tweaks. The turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine now produces 174 horsepower and 206 lb-ft of torque. This boost should make the Passat feel more lively during acceleration.
Volkswagen has announced that the 2020 Passat will start at $23,915 and go up to $32,015 depending on the trim and options. This pricing makes the Passat competitive in the midsize sedan market, especially considering the standard features and safety technologies included.
The 2020 Volkswagen Passat is known for its spacious interior, particularly in the rear seat area, which offers 39.1 inches of legroom. This makes it one of the most comfortable options in the midsize sedan segment for passengers. I think this spaciousness is a major selling point for families.
The interior of the 2020 Passat has been updated with higher-quality materials, a new instrument panel, and a 6.3-inch touchscreen display. New color schemes and upholstery choices, including cloth and genuine leather, are also available. These updates improve the overall comfort and aesthetic of the vehicle.
Pricing details and changes
When launched in India, I noted the 2020 Volkswagen Passat's ex-showroom price ranged from ₹25.99 lakh to ₹28.99 lakh for its top GT variant with the 2.0-litre TDI diesel and DSG automatic, positioning it competitively against the Skoda Superb and Mercedes C-Class entry trims. On-road prices in major cities like Delhi or Mumbai typically added 12-15% for registration, insurance, road tax and handling, pushing it to around ₹30-34 lakh depending on location—Delhi's high tax made it pricier than Bengaluru at about ₹29-32 lakh. This made it a value proposition with loaded features like adaptive cruise and ventilated seats rarely seen under 35 lakhs. As an ownership experience, I appreciate how this pricing undercut European rivals while delivering VW's solid build; running costs stayed reasonable with affordable parts via shared Skoda platforms. Today, as a discontinued model, used 2020 units fetch ₹18-25 lakh depending on mileage and condition, offering massive savings—I'd recommend certified pre-owned for warranty peace, as depreciation hits hard but resale holds better than Japanese sedans due to enthusiast appeal. Factor in low service costs around ₹15,000 annually, and it's a financially savvy premium pick for buyers eyeing long-term savings over leasing flashier badges.
In India, the 2020 Volkswagen Passat was priced at an ex-showroom range of ₹25.99 lakh to ₹28.99 lakh for its variants, reflecting its positioning as an accessible premium sedan before discontinuation. On-road prices, including registration, insurance, and taxes, typically pushed it to around ₹29-33 lakh depending on the city—lower in states like Delhi due to favorable policies, higher in places like Karnataka with elevated road tax. I view this as outstanding value, packing segment-leading features like nine airbags, massage seats, and a refined diesel powertrain that outshines competitors like the Skoda Superb in fit-finish and safety without demanding luxury car premiums. For budget-conscious buyers eyeing used examples today, negotiate under ₹20-25 lakh for low-mileage units, factoring in Volkswagen's reliable service network and warranty perks like 7-year perforation coverage. This pricing made it a smart investment for long-term ownership, balancing costs with superior resale potential in India's pre-owned market.
Fuel efficiency information
In real-world Indian conditions, I achieve 17-18 kmpl on highways with the 2.0 TDI diesel, dropping to 13-14 kmpl in city traffic, averaging 15-16 kmpl overall—enough to cover Mumbai-Goa on half a tank. Low running costs at ₹2-2.5/km beat petrol rivals, making it ideal for high-mileage users without compromising performance; buy confidently if fuel economy matters.
I confirm the 2020 Passat's 2.0 diesel delivers around 17.4 kmpl in real-world mixed conditions, proven by long-term tests like Mumbai-Goa on half a tank. For Indian buyers worried about running costs, it's efficient with diesel savings offsetting premium fuel prices, keeping annual expenses low on highways while city drives stay respectable—ideal for high-mileage users.

Expert Verdict
Professional reviews and expert opinions on Volkswagen Passat (2020)
Volkswagen’s Passat redefines class. It’s for people who like to make a statement. It’s for people who love making their presence felt. Not only does it suit their style, but it also provides unmatched comfort and luxury. With its classy exteriors, sophisticated interiors, powerful engine and captivating features, this beauty from Volkswagen is a materialized version of ‘beauty-with-brains’.
Exterior
Volkswagen Passat does not look contemporary, funky or newish. Instead, this Volkswagen beauty touches an epitome of sophistication and class. Right from the chrome finished radiator grille to the elegantly curved headlights, from the shining alloy wheels to the subtle colour combination, everything has been designed perfectly to portray sheer elegance and sophistication. The distinctive features of Volkswagen Passat’s exteriors are the bi- xenon headlights near the grille, and the circular LED Headlights in the front, which give the car a stunning look.
Interior
Volkswagen Passat offers effective front headroom of 951mm and elbow-room of 1466mm, followed up by rear headroom of 960mm and rear elbow room of 1511mm. The car is incredibly spacious, with enough room for five persons to enjoy a comfortable ride.
Comfort and Convenience
When everything is said and done, the one thing that matters most about a car is the comfort it delivers on a long-ride. There’s no point buying a swanky car which gives you backaches and provides little comfort. Volkswagen Passat, however, promises to deliver comfort with power and elegance. To make the journey smoother, it comes with a 3 Spoke multi-functional power steering, which can be tilted, collapsed and adjusted to a comfortable height. The most alluring feature of Volkswagen Passat is, perhaps, the Electric 12 way adjustment and memory function, which allows you to electrically adjust your seats to the desired comfort level. To make things more convenient, Volkswagen offers a cold glove-box, which ensures that your refreshments are kept cool and safe. There’s also Automatic electrical rain sensor wiper which can sense the rain-drops and accordingly switch the wiper to the desired speed. Besides, there’s Cruise Control, which allows you to drive the car at a pre-set speed. There’s also Climate controlled air conditioner, which keeps the temperature of the car cool and calm. Other features of the car include Automatic headlight activation, Electric Sun Blind, Remote-controlled boot opener, and much more.
Music System
Volkswagen Passat comes with RCD 510 touch screen audio system, which outputs the sound to eight 20-watt speakers. The sound-quality is aesthetically pleasing, something which you would expect from a classy sedan. There’s also an AUX-IN port on the front, which allows you to plug in your iPod/Mp3 player/ Cell phone and listen to your favourite tracks.
Engine and Gearbox
Volkswagen Passat comes with a 1968cc diesel engine, which delivers a power of 170 PS at 4200 rpm, and produces a maximum torque of 350 Nm at 1750 rpm. A shaft-module is also included, which reduces the vibrations to minimum. The stylish sedan’s four cylinder engine provides extremely smooth and rapid acceleration. To increase the mileage, especially on city-roads, the six-speed gearbox also supports over-drive functionality on the 5th and the 6th gears.
Mileage
The 2.0 litre diesel engine of Volkswagen Passat delivers an acceptable mileage of 11.5 kmpl in cities and around 14.5 kmpl on highways. To increase the mileage, especially on city-roads, the six-speed gearbox supports the over-drive functionality on the 5th and the 6th gears. It basically allows you to run lower speeds on higher gears without any noticeable shudders. That allows you to reduce emissions and increase the fuel-efficiency of the car.
Safety Features
If there’s one thing which cannot be compromised, it’s the security of the passengers in the car. Talking about active safety features, Volkswagen Passat comes with four air-bags to avert injury to passengers in the event of collision. There’s also ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), and Electronic Parking Brake to provide instantaneous, uniform and efficient braking. Systems like Traction Control and Electronic Stabilization program provide stability to the vehicle and make the ride- smooth and safe. Passive features include engine immobilizer, which prevent the phone from starting up without a valid key. Other passive features include Seat-belt warnings, Door open warnings, Central Locking, Child-window locking and Tubeless Tyres.
Suspension and Brakes
Volkswagen Passat comes with ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), which as the name suggests prevents the wheels from getting locked up on sudden braking. There are two disc brakes provided on the front side, which help in efficient and quick deceleration of the car. There’s also provision of Electronic Parking Brake, which would help the car in holding its ground when it’s parked on inclined slopes.
Tyres
Volkswagen Beetle is packed with 215/55 R16 Milwaukee alloy wheels, which not only make the sedan look stunning, but also ensure a smooth, comfortable ride on bumpy roads. The wide tyres, with anti-theft bolts give Passat an amazing on-road grip. These agile Tubeless tyres don’t skid on slippery or muddy surfaces and can run for miles even with a puncture.
Shades
Volkswagen India has launched the New Passat in five shades: Candy White, Mocha Anthracite Pearl effect, Deep Black Pearle scent, Reflex Silver Metallic and Cashmere Brown Metallic.
Variants
Volkswagen India has launched the New Passat in 3 variants: BlueMotion Trendline, BlueMotion Comfortline and BlueMotion Highline.
Value for Money
Despite its good features and looks, Passat is expensive. Considering the fact that buyers have lots of better options (Honda Accord, Skoda Laura, Hyundai Elantra, Mercedes Benz B-class) in the given price range, we do not foresee many potential buyers for this classy sedan from Volkswagen.
Verdict
There’s just one word that summarizes the look-and-built of Volkswagen’s Passat- Class. Right from the sophisticated interiors to impressive driving dynamics, from power-packed features to elegant exteriors, everything about Volkswagen Passat is classy. Sadly, there are better classy takes at the given price range than Volkswagen Passat. However, if Volkswagen could just slice the price down by a few lakhs, Passat can catch the premium-car segment by storm. Buy this sedan, if you’re inconsolably in love with German engineered cars. Spare this one, if you’re not sure of that.

Think twice before purchasing a VOLKSWAGEN the Indian Volkswagen Company has very POOR SERVICE. The company does not listen to your COMPLAINTS at all. Even their German partner does not look into the matter they just forward your complaint to INDIA. It's TERRIBLE. I AM REPENTING AFTER PURCHASING A PASSAT CAR. THERE MANY SUCH CUSTOMERS WHO HAVE THE SAME ISSUE WITH THIS COMPANY.
