Synopsis
Toyota HIACE is one of the most reliable and prominent machines in the global market. One might find Toyota HIACE around every nook and corner, but India is not exactly the most sought-after market for such vehicles. We can see a few locally made minivans moving around which are affordable as compared to the foreign brand. Piquing the interest of Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), they launched Toyota HIACE GL in the Indian market in 2021. It is available in only one trim, the 14-seater version, which Toyota has brought as a CBU (completely built unit).
Toyota HIACE is definitely not an affordable daily commuter van, and when you compare it to its rivals, Toyota HIACE GL is quite a costly purchase. But the Japanese carmaker knows it as well and seems to test the market in India by not bringing the best iteration of the HIACE to India. Toyota HIACE GL is the previous-gen model, first introduced in 2004 in the global market and the latest iteration of the HIACE is on sale in the global market from 2019.
Toyota paid little attention to customisation for the 14-seater MPV as the exterior design is not exciting and that is understandable as it is the older-gen model. The front of the Toyota HIACE GL features a flat-ish yet broad face with large rectangular halogen headlights covering the equally large chrome-plated grille. It has a raked windscreen, HIACE characteristic tall roofline and steel wheels. The rear is as vanilla as the front except for flat fascia, a small chrome bar below the Toyota badge and thin vertically arranged tail lights.
The interior is quite simple and utilitarian, no high-end material or modern styling is used, instead, it offers ruggedness and practicality. They have well optimized the space for the passengers and plenty of storage spaces are dotted around the cabin. Features it offers are manual AC, front power windows, a 2-DIN audio system with USB connectivity, a CD player and fabric seat upholstery.
2023 Toyota HIACE GL is powered by a BS6-compliant 2755cc 2.8L 4-cylinder Turbo-Diesel DOHC engine that churns out a maximum power of 151 HP and a maximum torque of 300 Nm, which is coupled with a 6-speed automatic gearbox. It is suspended on the front independent double-wishbone, upper torsion bar spring hydraulic dampers, ball-joint mounted anti-roll bar and rigid axle, and semi-elliptic leaf springs with hydraulic dampers at the rear.
Toyota has equipped the HIACE with ventilated disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. On the safety front, Toyota HIACE GL is offered with ABS with EBD, dual front airbags, door ajar warning, low fuel warning, 3-point front seat belts and pre-tensioners, and a collapsible steering column and a rear windscreen defogger.
2023 Toyota HIACE GL is the only trim available in India and Toyota is offering it in two colour options; White and Silver. It has a claimed ARAI mileage of 12 km/l and highway mileage of 10 km/l.
