Proton Saga FLX

About
The Proton Saga FLX is a compact sedan known for its spacious interior, despite its exterior dimensions. It features a 1.3-liter engine that provides good power and pickup, making it capable of reaching three-digit speeds with ease. The car boasts a firm yet well-damped ride, although the suspension can feel soft over bumps. Handling is stable, though cornering can be less confidence-inspiring due to the cars weight and suspension setup. The interior is equipped with basic amenities such as air conditioning, power windows, and reverse sensors, making it a practical choice for daily use. The car also comes with improved safety features like ABS and dual airbags in higher trim levels. Overall, the Saga FLX is a reliable and practical vehicle that prioritizes comfort and value for money.

USER OPINION

Our take on this /// Verdict
The Proton Saga FLX, although not available in the Indian market, offers a mixed bag of features and performance based on reviews from other regions. It is clear that this car excels in providing generous interior space, comfortable ride quality, and decent handling for its segment. The 1.3-liter engine delivers satisfactory power and pickup, making it suitable for both city and highway driving. However, the CVT transmission has been a point of contention for many owners, who find it less than ideal. The cars reliability is generally good, with some minor issues such as the rear drum noise. Overall, if this car were to be introduced in India, it would be a solid choice for those seeking a budget-friendly sedan with good space and comfort, but potential buyers should be aware of the transmission and some ergonomic limitations.
Price
Since the Proton Saga FLX is not sold in India, there is no official pricing available. However, if we were to speculate based on its pricing in other markets, it would likely fall into the budget sedan segment. In Malaysia, the Saga FLX is priced around RM 40,000 to RM 50,000, which translates to approximately 7.5 lakh to 9.5 lakh. In India, considering local taxes, duties, and other costs, the ex-showroom price could range from 8 lakh to 11 lakh, and the on-road price might be around 9.5 lakh to 13.5 lakh. This pricing would position it competitively against other budget sedans in the Indian market.
Latest Updates
Wednesday, 06 November 2024 08:42 PM Proton has collaborated with Grab Malaysia to enhance vehicle options for e-hailing drivers, offering exclusive perks when they purchase the Proton Saga. This partnership aims to elevate the driving experience and support the growing needs of the e-hailing industry. I think this is a smart move to increase the Sagas appeal in the ride-hailing sector.
Tuesday, 10 September 2024 01:48 PM Proton has expanded its global reach by starting local assembly of the Saga in Egypt, set to begin in December 2024. This move is part of Protons strategy to address global market demand and strengthen its presence internationally. The Sagas reliability and affordability are expected to make it a popular choice in new markets.
Tuesday, 20 August 2024 01:09 AM Proton has announced that the next-generation Proton Saga will retain the current platform but with significant upgrades. This decision is part of Protons collaboration with Zhejiang Geely Holding Ltd to enhance the existing platform rather than switching to a new one. This approach aims to leverage the strengths of the current platform while incorporating new technologies and improvements. I think this strategy will help Proton maintain its competitive edge in the market.
Friday, 26 August 2022 09:18 AM The Proton Saga continues to be a simple and no-frills vehicle, offering an affordable sedan experience. It features a conventional suspension setup with Macpherson struts at the front and a torsion beam at the rear, making it comfortable for city driving. However, it lacks the stiffness and precision needed for higher speeds. I think this makes it a great option for daily city use but not ideal for long highway drives.
Friday, 26 August 2022 02:20 PM The Proton Saga features an impressive list of safety features, including dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, brake assist, and reverse parking sensors. Higher variants also come with electronic stability control, traction control, and hill hold assist. This emphasis on safety has contributed to the Sagas 4-star safety rating from ASEAN NCAP.
Tuesday, 31 May 2022 10:20 PM The Proton Saga has been shipped to South Africa as part of Protons international expansion. The CMH Group in South Africa is the distributor for Proton vehicles, including the Saga, X50, and X70. This move marks Protons entry into the African market, leveraging the Sagas reputation as a dependable and budget-friendly car.
Thursday, 12 May 2022 09:25 PM In May 2022, Proton introduced a second facelift for the third-generation Saga, adding new variants such as the Premium S AT and Standard Lite AT. These updates included minor modifications and the introduction of new safety features like reverse cameras and front parking sensors in the higher variants. This move aims to keep the Saga competitive in the market with fresh offerings.
Wednesday, 28 September 2016 04:22 PM The third-generation Proton Saga, launched in 2016, has undergone extensive changes while still using the FLX platform of its predecessor. The new model features a completely re-engineered exterior design, a revamped interior with improved NVH reduction, and enhanced safety features such as electronic stability control and a 20% stronger body structure. This has earned it a 4-star safety rating from ASEAN NCAP. I believe these updates make the Saga a more desirable and accomplished entry-level sedan.
Wednesday, 28 September 2016 10:45 AM Proton has kept development costs for the third-generation Saga relatively low by recycling up to 60% of parts and components from the outgoing model and borrowing equipment from other Proton models. This cost-effective approach has helped maintain the Sagas affordability without compromising on quality. I believe this is a key factor in the Sagas enduring popularity.
Wednesday, 28 September 2016 12:54 PM The Proton Sagas interior has been significantly revamped, featuring new door cards, dashboard panels, and a redesigned centre console. The cabin also includes twin USB charging ports and a storage compartment, enhancing user convenience. These updates have improved the overall refinement and perceived quality of the interior.
Mileage
Friday, 22 November 2024 11:33 AM The Proton Saga FLX is reported to have moderate fuel efficiency. Owners have noted that with normal driving, the car can achieve around 9.5 kmL, which is reasonable for its class. However, this mileage can drop to around 7-8 kmL with heavier foot usage. For Indian buyers concerned about mileage and running costs, this car would be a decent choice, especially for those with moderate driving habits.
