Hyundai i15
General information and overview
The Hyundai i15 is an upcoming petrol hatchback tailored for India, featuring a 1197cc 4-cylinder engine with 79 bhp at 5200 rpm and 114 Nm at 4000 rpm, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission for smooth shifts in traffic. ARAI-rated at 16 kmpl and 12 kmpl city, its 35L tank suits daily commutes, while compact hatch dimensions promise easy parking in tight spaces. Expected at ₹5 lakh ex-showroom, it targets value seekers against Maruti Celerio and Renault Kwid, leveraging Hyundai's reputation for durable builds and service network. Key aspects include peppy low-end torque for overtakes, refined NVH over segment norms, and practicality for four adults plus luggage. Launch date unannounced, but specs signal a no-nonsense city car with strong resale potential—ideal if you prioritize efficiency, affordability, and brand trust over luxury.
The i15 is presented as a petrol, manual-only hatchback with a small fuel tank (35 litres), ARAI-rated mileage of 16 kmpl and city mileage around 12 kmpl, positioned as an entry-level practical commuter with modest power outputs reported across sources (engine options and figures vary in early listings) and a focus on value over premium features; I view it as a straightforward choice for budget-conscious buyers who prioritise fuel economy, low servicing complexity and easy manoeuvrability in Indian cities.
Expert opinion and recommendation
I've been closely following Hyundai's lineup in India, and the i15 stands out as a promising entry-level hatchback poised to revive the brand's compact car legacy. With its expected petrol engine delivering 79 bhp at 5200 rpm and 114 Nm at 4000 rpm paired to a 5-speed manual, it promises peppy city drives and decent highway pulls, ideal for urban commuters dodging Mumbai or Delhi traffic. The 16 kmpl ARAI mileage and 12 kmpl city figure make it frugal enough for daily runs, while the 35-litre tank ensures fewer stops. At an estimated ₹5 lakh ex-showroom, it undercuts rivals like Maruti Celerio and Renault Kwid, offering Hyundai's signature build quality and features in a segment craving value. I appreciate the 1197cc 4-cylinder setup for refinement over three-pot rivals, though real-world tests will confirm NVH levels. For buyers tired of bland options, the i15's hatchback practicality, compact dimensions, and potential for modern touches like a touchscreen could seal the deal—it's a smart buy if launched soon, blending affordability with Hyundai reliability to edge out competitors in running costs and resale.
I find the Hyundai i15 appealing for buyers seeking a simple, affordable city hatchback that prioritises low ownership cost and easy drivability; the claimed ARAI figure of 16 kmpl and compact dimensions make it well suited to urban commuting while the expected sub-₹6 lakh positioning keeps it competitive against entry-level rivals.
Recent news and announcements
The Hyundai i15 is expected to be priced at around Rs. 5 lakh in India, making it an attractive option in the budget hatchback segment. This pricing strategy could help Hyundai compete strongly against rivals like the Maruti Swift and Tata Tiago. I think this aggressive pricing will definitely draw a lot of attention from budget-conscious buyers.
The Hyundai i15 will be available only in a manual transmission and petrol fuel option, with an ARAI mileage of 16 kmpl. This simplicity in transmission and fuel type could make maintenance and running costs more manageable for owners. I believe this focus on practicality will appeal to many first-time car buyers.
Hyundai has not yet announced the official launch date for the i15, leaving potential buyers in anticipation. The lack of a sunroof in the i15s features list might be a minor disappointment for some, but it aligns with the cars budget-friendly positioning. I think the absence of a sunroof wont be a deal-breaker for most buyers in this segment.
The Hyundai i15 will compete directly with other popular hatchbacks such as the Maruti Alto K10, Maruti S-Presso, and Citroen C3. Its competitive pricing and expected feature set could make it a strong contender in the market. I believe the i15 has the potential to shake up the budget hatchback segment.
There is no official word from Hyundai on the design and features of the i15, but it is expected to follow the companys current design language. Given Hyundais recent design trends, the i15 might feature a sleek and modern look. I think the design will be a key factor in attracting younger buyers.
Pricing details and changes
In India, the Hyundai i15 is slated for an ex-showroom price of around ₹5 lakh for its base manual petrol variant, making it aggressively positioned against Maruti Alto K10 and Citroen C3 in the sub-₹6 lakh bracket. On-road prices, factoring insurance, registration, and taxes, are estimated at ₹5.5-5.6 lakh in major cities like Delhi or Mumbai, with variations by state—expect higher RTO and road tax in high-registration areas like Karnataka. I've crunched similar launches, and this pricing strategy screams value, undercutting Tata Punch 2025's ₹6 lakh tag while matching Hyundai's premium feel. Ex-showroom keeps it accessible for budget buyers, but on-road adds 10-12% realistically; no frills mean lower ownership costs upfront. Compared to discontinued i10 Nios at ₹5.47 lakh ex-showroom, it's a spiritual successor with potential discounts at launch. For cost-conscious families, this sweet spot aids buying decisions—opt for it over pricier SUVs if city use dominates, as resale holds strong in Hyundai's network.
I expect the ex-showroom price in India to be around ₹5.0 lakh for the base variant with on-road pricing varying by city (registration, insurance and state taxes) and typically adding roughly 12–18% depending on state leads to on-road figures in the ₹5.6–5.9 lakh band in many metros.
Fuel efficiency information
I find the i15's 16 kmpl ARAI and 12 kmpl city mileage solid for its 1197cc petrol engine in Indian conditions, keeping running costs low at about ₹6-7 per km on premium fuel. With a 35L tank, expect 400-500km range per fill, perfect for urban budgets versus thirstier rivals—buy it confidently if mileage trumps power.
Official ARAI is quoted at 16 kmpl while city real-world figures are likely nearer to 12 kmpl, so running costs will be very low for short urban trips but expect fuel efficiency to drop on aggressive driving or long highway loads.
