Toyota Fortuner Diesel 4x4 Review
Best Selling SUV in its ClassWednesday, August 6, 2014
Toyota Fortuner is medium-sized SUV from Japanese multinational automaker Toyota Motor Corporation. Fortuner is also sold with the name of Toyota SW4 in some countries. The SUV is based on the Toyota Hilux pickup truck platform and was assembled initially only in Thailand. Later on Toyota launched it in other countries also. The Indian debut for the Toyota Fortuner came in 2009. Toyota is assembling the Fortuner from imported CKD kits at its Bidadi, Karnataka plant. Initially only a single variant was sold in India which is the 3.0L turbo diesel engine but later in 2012 Toyota added the 4x2 manual as well as automatic transmission to the line-up. Toyota Fortuner stands out with its impressive muscular body and sporty looks.
This elegantly looking power machine comes with king size interiors and stylish exteriors. It borrows many styling features from its elder sibling Land Cruiser. The big SUV appears with strong bonnet lines and large head lamps in angular shape. The grille is quite wider and larger with five layered chrome strips along with big Toyota logo. The Fortuner SUV comes with new bumpers, wider intake on bonnet for intercooler, new 17" alloy wheels that give it killer looks. The body coloured electrically foldable ORVMs features turn indicators on them. The side and rear profile of the SUV is tweaked with transparent tail lights, chrome door handles, jazzy wiper well matched with rear spoiler and rear bumper with new reflective lights. The interiors of the Fortuner are also pretty comfy and pleasing to eye.
The dual tone dashboard is packed with an advanced instrument cluster and beige upholstery. It has four spoke steering wheel shared with Camry. The steering wheel along with gear knob is wrapped in leather with silver finishing on steering. It features beige and black colors inside the cabin along with beige coloured leather seats and trims. The door handles are chrome finished with wood finished panels. The central console has a six-inch touch-screen that controls the 2-din single CD/MP3 capable audio system, DVD player with six speakers and reverse camera. The stylish leather covered steering wheel has audio controls mounted over it. The Toyota Fortuner is available in 4x4 and 4x2 wheel drive systems. The 4x4 drive option is available with only 5-speed automatic transmission while the variant 4x2 wheel drive option comes with both 5-speed manual and 5-speed automatic transmission.
Under the hood the Fortuner houses a 3.0L 4 Cylinders, 16 Valve, DOHC, common-rail diesel engine. This motor has 2982cc of displacement and delivers max power of 171 bhp at 3600 rpm. The torque produced is 343 Nm between 1400-3400 rpm with the manual transmission and 360 Nm in the range of 1400-3200 rpm for the automatic transmission variant. The 3.0L motor starts pulling out torque as early as 1400 rpm. The SUV reaches 0 to 100 kmph in almost 12 seconds and can easily go pass the 150 kmph mark. The 7 seater SUV returns fuel mileage of 9-10 kmpl in city and 12-13 kmpl on highways for the 4x4 variant. While for the 4x2 variant the figures changes to 10 kmpl in city and 13 kmpl on highways with manual transmission.
