Maruti Suzuki has finally signalled the launch of its SUV Jimny in India, which was showcased at Auto Expo 2020. As per the latest report by Autocar India, Maruti Suzuki has green-lit the Jimny for the Indian vehicle market. As per the report, information related to Jimny was shared by the manufacturer at a recently held dealer conference. However, the exact date for the launch has not been shared by the brand. The key update that has been confirmed is that the 5-door variant is going to be launched in our country.

The spy shots of the forthcoming Jimny have already surfaced online and suggest that the company is working on the larger version of the SUV. When it comes to dimensions, the Jimny will be 3,850mm in length, 1645mm in width, and 1730mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2550mm. Hence, the wheelbase and length are extended by 300 mm, which means the rear occupants will have ample space. The upcoming SUV will come with a 4x4 wheel drive.

In terms of powertrain, the Jimny will be powered by a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, naturally-aspirated petrol engine capable of producing 102 hp and 138 Nm of torque. The transmission will be handled by the 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The powertrain is the same as that which is currently being used in the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Vitara Brezza, S-Cross, Ertiga, and XL6.

This engine will come equipped with 12V mild-hybrid technology, which offers torque assist function at lower speeds and idle start/stop functionality. The brand is already producing left-hand-driving Jimny for export purposes, hence, they were spotted multiple times. According to the latest media reports, Maruti Suzuki is also working on right-hand drive SUVs. When it comes to competition, there will be no direct rivals for the 5-door version, but as Mahindra is working on the 5-door Thar, it could be a competitor for it in the future.
