According to recent reports, Maruti Suzuki is planning to target the Indian SUV segment with the addition of a host of new products in the said segment in the coming months. Some reports also suggest that the brand is planning to launch the 5-door Jimny SUV in the Indian market which will essentially take the place of recently-discontinued Maruti Gypsy in the brand’s portfolio. Article image The earlier reports also suggested that the brand was all set to bring in the Maruti Jimny as the next-gen Gypsy in the Indian market, though considering no official confirmation from the brand, all the speculations were turned down by the media. Since the SUV segment is witnessing robust sales in the Indian market, targeting the market with the introduction of a 5-door Jimny will be one of the vital steps to stay ahead in the competition. Article image The next-gen Gypsy or the upcoming Jimny will be placed in the brand’s portfolio just below the Maruti Vitara Brezza. In the international markets, the brand currently offers the Jimny as a 3-door model which is powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that is capable of generating maximum power of 102HP and a peak torque of 130Nm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox while the 4-speed CVT transmission is also available for the customers. Article image One can further expect the India-spec 5-door Jimny SUV to feature the same mechanical bits and pieces as compared to its international-spec variant though the wheelbase is expected to be increased to accommodate more doors. The brand is expected to offer a fresh lineup of SUVs in India in the coming years to compete in the market with the likes of best-selling products like Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and more. In addition to this, Maruti is also working on launching the Grand Vitara in the Indian market though there has been no official confirmation received on same.
