2024 Citroen C3 Aircross: Powerful Upgrades, Brazilian Delight, and Safety Concerns

Introduction

In 2024, Citroen is set to introduce an updated version of the C3 Aircross in Brazil. This revised model now has a new 1.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine that improves performance over the previous generation. More specifically, it is capable of producing 200 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque and 130 horsepower (PS). This car may be a good option for drivers in Brazil because it comes with cruise control and a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) to go with this engine.

The T200 Engine

The powertrain at the heart of the 2024 Citroen C3 Aircross is the T200 engine, also known as the MultiAir III engine. It falls under Fiat's Global Small Engine (GSE) range, often referred to as the Firefly range. This engine platform has a reputation for being adaptable and suitable for a large number of automobile types. The T200 is an inline-3 turbo petrol engine with a 4-valve per cylinder layout. Originally introduced in 2021, it has found its way into several Stellantis vehicles, including the Fiat Strada, Fiat Pulse, Fiat Fastback, and the more recent Peugeot 208.

Fuel Flexibility

A unique feature of the T200 engine is its ability to adapt to different fuel types. When powered by E100, a 100% ethanol fuel, it can achieve a peak power output of 130 PS at 5750 RPM. When using regular petrol, it produces 125 PS of power. Remarkably, the torque output remains constant at 200 Nm, available at 1750 RPM for both ethanol and petrol.

CVT Transmission and Cruise Control

For the Brazilian market, Citroen has confirmed the inclusion of a CVT gearbox in the C3 Aircross. Smooth acceleration is the outcome of the CVT transmission's design, which mimics conventional gear ratios. It is expected that this gearbox would offer a smooth driving experience, even if Citroen has not yet disclosed precise performance figures and fuel efficiency.

In addition to the CVT transmission, the Brazilian version of the C3 Aircross also features cruise control.

This method allows drivers to maintain a constant pace without constantly depressing the accelerator pedal, which significantly increases comfort during long-distance driving.

Indian Variant and Powertrain Choices

In contrast, the Indian version of the C3 Aircross is less likely to feature the new T200 engine. Car manufacturers typically prefer to utilize the same powertrains across multiple vehicle models to reduce costs. In India, the C3 Aircross is expected to come with a 6-speed automatic gearbox, which recently made its debut in Indonesia and offers slightly higher torque. While Citroen has not specified the exact type of automatic transmission, it is highly likely to be an Automated Manual Transmission (AMT).

Performance Comparison

Comparing the T200 engine to the existing engine option available for the Indian market, the PureTech 110 1.2-liter 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine, the T200 offers a significant boost in power, providing an extra 15 PS and an additional 10 Nm of torque, despite its smaller displacement. Both the Brazilian and Indian versions of the C3 Aircross share similarities in terms of dimensions, features, creature comforts, and overall design.

Safety Concerns

However, there is a notable safety concern surrounding the Brazilian version of the C3 Aircross. In recent Latin NCAP safety tests, the Brazilian Citroen C3 received a disappointing rating of 0 stars, indicating potential safety deficiencies in the event of a collision. This makes one wonder about the vehicle's safety record, especially in light of its rivals.

In Brazil, the 2024 Citroen C3 Aircross will enter a competitive market, facing off against popular models such as the Hyundai Creta, Chevrolet Spin, and VW T-Cross.
