So, why does the Toyota Fortuner get the image of a 'bad boy' on Indian roads?

It’s totally justified. I’ve come to know that every time I see a Fortuner in my rearview mirror that I’m about to get tailgated or cut off. And it is like an unwritten rule for them.

I think it has to do with the size of the car and the kind of people who can afford it. And it attracts those who want to display their status and power on the road.

I am a Fortuner owner and I hate this stereotype. I drive responsibly but I’m judged all the time for my car choice. To generalize all owners isn't fair.

Some buyers like the "bad boy" image. That road presence and the feeling of power is what they want. Toyota's not exactly not discouraging it with their marketing either.

I think it's more that the vehicle has the capabilities. If you are normally a calm driver, it is easy to get tempted to use that much power and size.
Is the Toyota Fortuner's off road capability overrated for most Indian users?
30 December 2024 11:03
Most users are definitely overrated. I have had my Fortuner for 3 years and never taken it off road. I like the peace of mind it provides but it’s overkill for city use.

Not overrated at all. While you might not go proper off roading, the Fortuner’s capability is pretty good for bad roads, waterlogged streets and the odd trip to a farmhouse or hill station.

It’s like buying a gaming laptop just for browsing and MS Office. It works, but you're not using all the features and paying more than you need to.

That's what makes it a Fortuner, its off road capability. If you want a soft roader, buy something else. Just because some owners don’t use it fully, don’t dilute the Fortuner’s DNA.

I think the possibility is more than the use. Even if you rarely do, knowing you can go anywhere is a big part of the appeal.

All-Trac system, bring it back! Today's market would be amazing with an AWD Celica with a turbo engine. It’s essentially the Golf R alternative to a Toyota.

Keep it simple, and keep it affordable. A lightweight naturally aspirated sports coupe with great handling. It's basically a step up from the GR86 but below the Supra.
