In India, how will the maintenance cost of the Tata Curvv EV differ from usual ICE vehicles?
29 October 2024 00:08
Maintenance costs for the Curvv would be so damned cheap, I think. All of that routine ICE maintenance has disappeared – no oil changes, no spark plugs, no timing belts. In the long run, it’ll save a ton.

Yes the first few years might be cheaper, but wait until that battery has to be replaced. That’s going to be a cost that few ICE car units ever have to factor in.

And a lot will depend on Tata's service network. They could do well with maintenance, if they train their technicians well, and have good coverage across India. It could be a nightmare if not.

Anyway I'm worried about the electronics. Yes, the drivetrain is simpler, but what of all of those complex computers and sensors in the EV? They’re not cheap to fix when they go wrong.

Maintenance will not be the real savings, it will be in fuel costs. Yet some repairs are more costly, but the petrol saved will easily outweight the cost.
In India, how will the maintenance cost of the Tata Curvv EV differ from usual ICE vehicles?

It'll be cheaper overall, but more unpredictable cost wise. EVs have random maintenance unlike ICE cars, sometimes issues can be whiplash, and they’re oftentimes more expensive to fix.

Initially, the cost of maintaining EVs might even be higher just because there are less people trained in being EV mechanics. Berback: ‘Over time, as EVs become ubiquitous and more folks learn that they can work on them, the costs should start coming down.’
Will India's Tata Curvv EV price itself to ruin its resale value?
26 October 2024 16:34
It might really help resale value. The Curvv will look out of place on a sea of boring, boxy EVs. It will be a destination for people in the used market that want something more unique.
Will India's Tata Curvv EV price itself to ruin its resale value?

It's not gonna tank the resale value, no way. Bidders on Indian second hand cars are very conservative. What they want is reliable, familiar; not a spaceship on wheels.

I think it will be a positive, but it could go either way. As you can imagine, EVs will soon become widespread, so the early adopters of cool designs like the Curvv will be considered trendsetters. Better resale prices may be the result.

The design might age poorly. In 5 years what looks futuristic now will be silly. I'd be afraid that it becomes the automotive version of those horribly '80s 'futuristic' gadgets.

The car design will depend more on resale value according to the car's reliability and Tata's reputation. Because, it would simply be, I mean, if it’s a good, solid, dependable EV, people will buy this thing, it just doesn’t matter how it looks.
Will India's Tata Curvv EV price itself to ruin its resale value?
26 October 2024 16:34
I think it will hurt resale in the short term but help in the long term. People will initially be skittish, but as the unique EV designs come to market, the Curvv will have a legion of followers that will celebrate the boldness and uniqueness that got the brand here in the first place.
Will India's Tata Curvv EV price itself to ruin its resale value?

The resale value depends on the city. If it could do well, it’s in metro areas where people are more open to unique designs. Out in smaller towns, it might be a tougher sell.
Has Tata put the new Nexon on a diet in pursuit of a better nose?

I drove both the old and the new Nexon and the ride quality difference wasn't huge. I think it’s worth the trade off in comfort to make the new one look way better.
Has Tata put the new Nexon on a diet in pursuit of a better nose?
26 October 2024 14:50
Are you kidding? Over bumps, the new Nexon is much stiffer feeling. Yes, it is cool, but I would rather have a comfortable ride than have heads turning. No doubt that Tata prioritizes style over substance here.

I think people are making a bigger deal out of it than it is. It is a bit firmer yes, but it also means better handling. It’s a more modern, European style setup. You can't have your cake and eat it, either you want a comfortable ride or better dynamics.
Has Tata put the new Nexon on a diet in pursuit of a better nose?
26 October 2024 14:50
I'd say as a long time Nexon owner selling his old Nexon to upgrade to the new model, the ride quality is different, not worse by any means. It’ll take some getting used to, but I do like the more planted feel on highways.
Has Tata put the new Nexon on a diet in pursuit of a better nose?
26 October 2024 14:50
In reality, most consumers will be buying a Nexon because they aren't after a luxury car ride. It also has improved looks and handling which make it feel more premium, which is what’s important in this segment.

Tata attempted to strike a balance, but perhaps stooped a wee bit too far towards sportiness, I think. In future updates they could probably fine tune the suspension a bit to find the better middleground.
