Has Tata put the new Nexon on a diet in pursuit of a better nose?
Tata Nexon has received a lot of fan fare for the new bold design in its latest facelift. It’s not a thing of beauty, but it’s certainly eye catching with its sleek LED DRLs, redesigned grille and more aggressive stance. But several long time Nexon owners and car enthusiasts have questioned if style overtook ride quality. According to reports, the model has felt stiffer on rough roads when compared to its predecessor. According to some, the bigger wheels and lower profile tires, while they look good, are a bit too harsh of a ride. The concern of the inexperienced is that the suspension may have been altered to fit to the new design, which will perhaps modify the comfortability that the Nexon was famous for. But those in favor of new design contend that any differences in ride quality are minimal enough that they are well worth the new design's aesthetic and handling benefits. This has prompted a discussion about the proportion between style and convenience in recent advanced auto plan, particularly in this aggressive compact SUV fragment.
I drove both the old and the new Nexon and the ride quality difference wasn't huge. I think it’s worth the trade off in comfort to make the new one look way better.
Are you kidding? Over bumps, the new Nexon is much stiffer feeling. Yes, it is cool, but I would rather have a comfortable ride than have heads turning. No doubt that Tata prioritizes style over substance here.
I think people are making a bigger deal out of it than it is. It is a bit firmer yes, but it also means better handling. It’s a more modern, European style setup. You can't have your cake and eat it, either you want a comfortable ride or better dynamics.
I'd say as a long time Nexon owner selling his old Nexon to upgrade to the new model, the ride quality is different, not worse by any means. It’ll take some getting used to, but I do like the more planted feel on highways.
In reality, most consumers will be buying a Nexon because they aren't after a luxury car ride. It also has improved looks and handling which make it feel more premium, which is what’s important in this segment.
Tata attempted to strike a balance, but perhaps stooped a wee bit too far towards sportiness, I think. In future updates they could probably fine tune the suspension a bit to find the better middleground.
You guys are getting something wrong. That stiffer ride is probably mostly about looks, sure, but there's a safety and handling aspect to that, too. Having a firmer suspension sometimes can mean better control aimed at emergency situation.
