Was the Discover 135 Sports a design ahead of its time?
Several of the Discover 135 Sports' design elements were slightly unusual for its segment at the time of its release. The latter seems to target practicality and efficiency in the motorcycle design which happens to coincide with the contemporary trends. Many manufacturers are now putting a focus on the bike's relatively lightweight construction, a sporty yet commuter friendly ergonomics, and a strong emphasis on mid range torque. That has led some enthusiasts to claim that the 135 Sports was ahead of its time in motorcycle design. Some believe it was a visionary concept, while others believe it was just a well implemented product for its time. Often, the debate revolves around whether the bike’s design principles really were forward thinking or if it’s all just a coincidence that the bike’s characteristics happen to align with current trends.

The 135 Sports clearly had something. One thing we’re seeing a lot more of now is its approach to accessible performance. Bajaj was reading the market right.

I'd say it was more ahead of its time than right for it. Bajaj met the needs of its market perfectly, but I don't think they were trying to predict future trends.

It was more timeless than ahead of its time. The fundamentals of good design don't change. The 135 just nailed it.

And the 135 Sports had something with its balance of performance and practicality. That philosophy is finally being caught up to by modern bikes. That was a glimpse of the future.

In some ways, yes. The motor was torquey and the design was lightweight. In other areas, electronics and emissions, it was very much a product of its era.

I don't think that's giving it quite enough credit. A well designed bike for its time, but visionary, no. A lot of its features were just good engineering practices.

Definitely ahead of its time. Exactly what many riders are looking for today is focus on usable power and efficiency. Bajaj got the 'practical performance' concept down before it was cool.
