Should Maruti have missed a trick by not offering the Celerio X with the 1.2L engine from the Swift?
The standard Celerio was launched with the Celerio X as a sportier, more lifestyle oriented version. It had its own styling cues, but under the hood it was the same car as the regular Celerio, and used the same 1.0L K10B engine. There are some enthusiasts out here who argue that Maruti could have further differentiated the X had it put a more powerful 1.2L K-series engine from the Swift on it that would also have justified the premium. That could have placed the Celerio X on a track to become a proper 'hot hatch' in the compact segment and to appeal more to enthusiast buyers. But some others contend that the same move could have cannibalized sales from other Maruti models or taken the Celerio X’s price too high for its target buyers. The result has spurred debates on what the product positioning should be, and if the market in India has space for more powerful offerings in the budget compact car segment.
Absolutely! With a 1.2L, a Celerio X would have been a pocket rocket. That was a big miss by Maruti.
Nah, the X would've been too expensive if it did. It was never meant to be a hot hatch, it was meant to be a stylish budget option.
If they had positioned it right, it could've worked. Maybe to fill the gap between Swift Juniors and some other segment.
The X's size was just peppy enough to make the 1.0L seem okay. It might have been overkill anything more powerful, and hurt its efficiency.
I'm torn. It would have been fun with the 1.2L, but that might have cannibalised Swift. It's possible that Maruti played it safe.
At the very least they should have had the option. Let buyers choose between efficiency and performance.
India could have had the X with 1.2L as the answer to the VW Up! GTI. Missed opportunity for sure.
