Is the Mahindra BE 6e Mahindra rushing into the premium EV segment?

With Mahindra's entry into the premium EV segment with the BE 6e, the automotive industry has raised eyebrows. The company has a strong presence in SUV market but is relatively new to the EV space and in particular to the premium segment. Impressive the BE 6e specs and features are if the device sees the light of the day, enough to compete with established global brands. But some potential buyers are still concerned about Mahindra's past with quality control and after sales service in their ICE vehicles. The question also arises whether Mahindra has the brand image to play in this premium space against luxury brands who are also entering the EV space. However, Mahindra has also entered the EV partnership with Volkswagen for EV components and the acquisition of REVA Electric Car Company. Another thing that could play in Mahindra's favor is the Indian market's preference for home grown brands. Other factors in contention include the pricing strategy and the timing of the launch vis a vis India’s EV infrastructure development.

The timing is perfect. With the price of fuel on the rise and increasing awareness of the environment, a premium EV may be just what the market is looking for.

It's good to see an Indian company taking on global brands. It’s not perfect, but it’s a step in the right direction for our auto industry.

They seem to be trying to be the 'Tesla of India' too fast. First, they should concentrate on getting the basics right.

I have confidence in the partnership with VW. And German engineering expertise could make a big difference, they’re not going into this blind.

After sales service is what I’m worried about. Mahindra doesn’t have the best track record with electronics, and EVs are complex. What if something goes wrong?

It is a risk, but a risk worth taking. This could actually change the way that people perceive Indian brands in the premium market if they nail this.

They're definitely rushing. Mahindra should have started with a cheaper EV to build trust and then jump to premium segment.

I think it's a smart move. Mahindra moves when the iron is hot. India’s EV market is still young, which gives them a chance to set things up early.
