Is the KTM 690 Enduro R a good bet for long-term ownership?

by @geeta.autosover 1 year ago0 views7 answers
With so many motorcycles out there, reliability is a major factor for most people shopping for a bike, and even more so for those looking to purchase a dual sport like the KTM 690 Enduro R for everyday use and adventure riding. High performance is what KTM is known for, but some riders worry about their long-term reliability and maintenance cost. The intention here is to get some real-world experiences from 690 Enduro R owners with the bike being several years old and talk about common problems, maintenance, and overall reliability. Although the 690 is not the cheapest bike in the world, it’s particularly relevant to those who are considering the 690 as their primary bike or on an extended adventure where reliability is key.

I’ve been using my 690 for long-distance adventure riding, and it has been shockingly reliable. Maintenance has never left me stranded in the middle of nowhere, but you need to be more proactive with it than some other bikes.

I've had mixed experiences. I have had a bunch of issues with my first 690, but my current one is bulletproof. I think that KTM reliability has improved over the years, but it’s not quite at Japan's level yet.

Definitely more attention than something that comes from Japanese bikes. Still, I actually like the more hands-on ownership experience. I've learned a lot about motorcycle mechanics.

Reliability is a lot about how you ride and maintain it, I think. But if you're every day at redline and skipping services, yeah, you're gonna have problems. If you treat it right, it’ll last.

I've driven 20,000 miles, and mine's been rock solid. To stay on top of oil changes and valve checks is the key. It's not a Japanese bike and not as low maintenance as one, but it's not the unreliable monster they make it out to be.

I honestly find it to be a bit of a headache. I’ve had fuel pump, rocker arm, and electrical gremlin issues. When it’s running right, it’s an awesome bike, but you better be prepared for some downtime and expensive repairs.

Mine is 5 years old and 30,000 miles with no major issues. Regular maintenance, and it will treat you right. But if you take care of these bikes, they’re built to last.
