Is the Kia Sportage's design more stylish than practical?
The new generation of the Kia Sportage has drawn praise for its bold, distinctive design, especially its front-end styling with unique 'boomerang' LED daytime running lights. But some argue that perhaps we have focused too much on style, in doing so we may have forgotten about practicality. Reduced visibility due to the sloping roofline, smaller rear windows and potentially an impaired cargo area has been mentioned. It makes you wonder whether Kia has got the balance between aesthetics and functionality right in the Sportage’s design.
The Sportage's design, I think, is one that Kia nailed it. Yes, it's not perfect, but name one modern car where it is. I feel like I’m driving something special, not just another boring crossover, because of the style. And let's be real, the cargo space is still more than enough for most people.
Definitely all style and no substance. Rear visibility is terrible and I've had to use the backup camera much more than I'd care to. The cargo area is smaller than it appears from the outside as well. Kia tried to be too cool with it.
It’s a compromise, and one I’m happy with. My old CR-V never turned heads, but the Sportage does. Honestly, once you get used to the visibility, it's not that bad. All the driver assists also help to mitigate any blind spots.
In fact I think Kia did a great job balancing style and practicality. It's not over the top but it's fresh and I've had no space or visibility issues. It's a much more expensive feeling car than it is.
I bought the Sportage for the style, but I do wish they'd toned it down a bit for better functionality sometimes. My kids get claustrophobic on long trips because there are small rear windows. It's not a deal breaker but if you have a family this may be something you want to consider.
