Has anybody been able to modify their Discover 125T Disc for better performance while still being reliable?
The Bajaj Discover 125T Disc is a decent commuter, and some of its owners wanted more from it by way of modifications. Discussion about the possibility of increasing the bike's power, handling or overall performance without sacrificing reliability or voiding the warranty has followed. Topics are common but include air filter upgrades, exhaust modifications, and even more extensive engine work. But there's lots of debate about whether it makes sense to monkey with a bike that’s fundamentally about efficiency and reliability. There are those that believe that any performance gains are minimal and not worth the risk, and there are those that believe there are noticeable improvements. It’s a conversation that tackles the trade off between desired performance and the type of bike you want to ride, and how that could impact resale value and durability down the line. There is also disagreement about legal implications regarding modifications, such as those related to emissions.
I replaced the air filter with a K&N and it gave a bit of performance bump. It’s nothing crazy, but it feels a bit more responsive now.
These bikes are just asking for trouble. It's not designed for performance, it's designed for efficiency. So they'll just give you an unreliable ride.
I’ve seen guys install aftermarket exhausts, but let’s be honest, it’s more noise than performance gain. Not worth it in my opinion.
The best 'mod' is good maintenance. If you keep it well tuned, you get the best performance you can without making it unreliable.
I re mapped the ECU and it noticeable made a difference in power delivery. It's not a race bike anymore but it is definitely peppier.
I tried a few mods on mine - air filter, exhaust, even ported the head. Got maybe 1-2 hp more. It's not worth the hassle or the expense.
Focus on handling mods instead. In reality, chasing a few extra horsepower doesn’t make as much of a difference as better tires and upgraded suspension.
I have a friend that bored out his engine for more displacement. Bike's had nothing but problems, but he's faster now. Stick to stock for reliability.
The only mod I would suggest is a good set of brake pads. It improves stopping power without messing with the bike’s overall balance.
If you want performance get a performance bike. It’s a waste of time and money to try and turn the Discover into something it isn’t.
