Can the Royal Enfield Roadster 650 live up to the competition of the other middleweight players?

Absolutely it can compete! The Japanese and European brands have nothing to match the unique charm of RE. Not all riders want the most powerful or highest tech bike, some just want a cool, reliable bike with character.

I'm skeptical. The 650 twin is nice, but it’s underpowered compared to the middleweight competition. There’d also be pressure on RE to drastically renovate the engine, or up the ante with some killer features, because unless then, the more established players might have a hard time stomaching the influx.

This isn’t about spec for spec competition. But the Roadster 650 will be a bike that appeals to another kind of rider – the rider that wants a more relaxed, approachable bike. It's apples and oranges.

RE's pricing will be key. If they can have a really low price and a decent package overall, they could get a lot of buyers who think that the other middleweights are too expensive.

I think it'll hold its own. The 650 twins have already proved popular and, with some modern touches, the Roadster could be a hit. Not everyone wants, or needs, a high strung sports bike for the street.

There is a huge aftermarket support for RE. While it may not be the most advanced out of the box, being able to customize and modify easily will be a big draw for a lot of riders.

Marketing and brand image will be what it comes down to. RE has a chance to make the Roadster cool and accessible to newer riders looking to move up, or experienced riders looking for something different.
Will the Royal Enfield Roadster 650’s modern features clash with the brand’s retro image?
13 January 2025 07:15
I doubt it will clash though. It’s time for RE to evolve, and adding modern features to a classic looking bike is the perfect way to do it. It’s retro style, but with modern convenience.
Will the Royal Enfield Roadster 650’s modern features clash with the brand’s retro image?

Some die hard traditionalists might be alienated, but I feel most riders will welcome the updates. However, if they continue to maintain the core look and feel, it won’t affect the brand image even if they add some tech.
Will the Royal Enfield Roadster 650’s modern features clash with the brand’s retro image?

I'm afraid it will become a no-man's land - too retro for the purists, too modern for the tech savvy riders. One way or the other, RE needs to commit.
Will the Royal Enfield Roadster 650’s modern features clash with the brand’s retro image?

The execution will be the key. If they can pull off the modern features seamlessly while retaining the classic RE vibe, it could be a home run. If it comes across as tacked on or out of place, it could backfire, however.
Will the Royal Enfield Roadster 650’s modern features clash with the brand’s retro image?

I think it's a smart move. The retro market is becoming crowded, so adding a bit of modern touch to RE could help it stand out. Features like LED lights and better instrumentation are just practical upgrades, plus.
Will the Royal Enfield Roadster 650’s modern features clash with the brand’s retro image?
13 January 2025 07:15
If they can keep the thump and the classic lines, I’m all for adding some modern conveniences. In 2025 not everyone wants to deal with carburetors and kick starts.

It’s tricky, but it’s necessary for growth. Nostalgia is not enough for RE, they need to bring in younger riders as well. It could also bridge that gap with modern features.
In real world riding, how will the Royal Enfield Roadster 650 perform compared to its 650cc siblings?
13 January 2025 07:15
I suspect the Roadster will be the best all rounder of the bunch. More comfortable than the GT for daily use, and sportier than the Interceptor for some weekend fun. It may just be the Goldilocks bike in RE’s 650 lineup.

More than anything, it’ll come down to ergonomics. The engine has proven itself versatile so the riding position and suspension setup will probably make the biggest difference in the real world.

I hope they will refine the gearing to make it a little more lively for city riding. The 650s are great as they are, but a little short geared for my taste in city traffic. It might be a blast around town if they can give it a bit more punch in the lower gears.
In real world riding, how will the Royal Enfield Roadster 650 perform compared to its 650cc siblings?
13 January 2025 07:15
In all reality, it will probably perform very similarly to the Interceptor. RE won’t mess too much with a winning formula, I doubt. The performance differences will probably be minimal, but there will be a difference in style and riding position.

If they can get the ergonomics right, it might actually be the best tourer of the bunch. Comfortier upright than the GT but not as laid back as the Interceptor or Super Meteor for better control on twisty roads.

I'm doubting it'll be much different performance wise to the Interceptor. Maybe a bit lighter? I don't think we'll see any huge changes to the engine or the chassis. It's almost certainly a styling exercise with slightly tweaked ergonomics.
