I believe it’s a missed opportunity. For lack of traditional options, they could have offered some unique, electric specific customization options.

It’s not ideal, but let’s be real, most G Wagen buyers just get black on black anyway. This won’t be a deal breaker for the target market.
Is the G 580's "G Turn" (360 degree spin) really a gimmick or will it be useful?

But it's definitely a gimmick, and it's a cool one! I can see it being useful maybe once in a blue moon, but otherwise it’s just for showing off.

I can see this being incredibly useful in off road situations as someone who's been stuck on tight trails before. It's not just for show.

It's a gimmick and it’s practical. It has some use, but really, most buyers will just use it to impress their friends in parking lots.

I think we underestimate how useful this could be in cities. Think about parallel parking, or trying to turn around in an alley. This could be a game changer for urban driving.

This is a waste of engineering resources. Instead of this party trick, they should have been improving range or charging speed.

I love it as a tech enthusiast. It's what electric drivetrains can do. It’s not super practical, but it does push the boundaries of what cars can do.

It's also a pain for the tires and drivetrain. Yeah, it looks cool, but what price will the car pay for it?

It's a great safety feature. In off road situations, it may be critical to be able to reorient your vehicle quickly in emergency situations.

I think it's hilarious. Picture the car meet where you pull up and just start spinning in place. It’s worth it just for the reactions!
The G 580 Edition One is all that and more, but is it worth the hype, or do you just pay for a status symbol?
13 January 2025 12:30
It’s worth the hype! The G 580 Edition One is a true electric SUV, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. It's expensive, sure, but you're basically getting cutting edge tech dressed up in an iconic package.
The G 580 Edition One is all that and more, but is it worth the hype, or do you just pay for a status symbol?
13 January 2025 12:30
Hands down a overpriced status symbol. The range is disappointing for the money and let's be honest, most buyers will never take it off road. It's just a way for rich people to get their eco-friendly on, while they show off at the same time.
The G 580 Edition One is all that and more, but is it worth the hype, or do you just pay for a status symbol?

I think it's somewhere in the middle. But the price is hard to justify, and the technology is impressive. While this is a step in the right direction for luxury EVs, they’re not quite there yet in terms of practicality.

I’m a car enthusiast and I like what Mercedes is trying to do here. It's not perfect, but it's a good start on the way to future electric off roading. It comes at a high price, but that’s to be expected with a first edition luxury EV.
The G 580 Edition One is all that and more, but is it worth the hype, or do you just pay for a status symbol?

It's all about perspective. It's probably worth it for the target market: wealthy G-Wagen fans who want to go electric. For the rest of us, it’s an interesting peek at the future of luxury EVs.
But will the G 580's boxy design have a material effect on its real world range?
13 January 2025 12:30
Absolutely. The problem is that brick like shape is going to kill the range, especially at highway speeds. It will probably only manage 200 miles in the real world.
But will the G 580's boxy design have a material effect on its real world range?
13 January 2025 12:30
Having some impact, but probably not to the extent that people think it will. Mercedes is not stupid, they've probably put a ton of work into other efficiency factors to make up for the shape.
But will the G 580's boxy design have a material effect on its real world range?
13 January 2025 12:30
Definitely will hurt range, but for the target market, it probably doesn't matter. While G-Wagen buyers want the looks, they don’t necessarily need the range.
But will the G 580's boxy design have a material effect on its real world range?

I believe we’re overestimating the impact. There are so many other factors affecting range for modern EVs - battery tech, motor efficiency, weight distribution. That is just one piece of the puzzle.
