At first, I was skeptical but the auto actually makes the Thar feel more premium without losing its character. The Thar has grown up a bit.
How does Mahindra Thar 4x2 LX Automatic fare as an urban SUV rival to Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos?

Apples and oranges, no way. It’s not for people who need another cookie cutter SUV. The Creta and Seltos don't have the character it has.

When it comes to practicality and features, Creta and Seltos miles ahead. The Thar has a cool factor that turns heads, but. It depends on what you value more.

I would say it's competitive, in its own way. Sure, it might not have all the bells and whistles, but it’s built like a tank and has presence on the road that the soft roaders can’t match.

The Creta and Seltos are probably better options for daily urban use. The Thar is for those who want to stand out and perhaps hit a trail on the weekends.

The Thar is more of a lifestyle choice. Compare features and comfort, and it’ll lose. But if you want something with personality and capability, the Thar wins no prizes.

And that’s a good thing, it’s not trying to be a Creta or Seltos. It’s for those who love the rugged look but don’t want to sacrifice too much urban comfort.

It’s in that sweet spot, I think. More capable than a Creta off-road, more character than a Seltos on-road. This is for those that don’t want to be the same as everyone else.
Is the Mahindra Thar 4x2 LX Automatic a city slicker in disguise or a true off roader?
28 January 2025 11:15
It's still a Thar at heart. It has an untold high ground clearance and a robust build such that it can maneuver rough terrain better than many city SUVs. Not everyone's weekend getaways need 4x4 either.
Is the Mahindra Thar 4x2 LX Automatic a city slicker in disguise or a true off roader?
28 January 2025 11:15
Nah, it's just a poser. It's like a tiger without claws without 4x4. Mahindra has sold out the Thar’s legacy for a few extra bucks from mall crawlers.

Mahindra is doing a smart thing. What they are doing is making the Thar accessible to people who love the looks but don’t need hardcore off road capabilities. But it’s still more capable than most crossovers out there.

It's definitely more city oriented but that doesn't make it any less of a Thar. It’s a tamed version of a wild animal, still cool, just more practical for everyday life.

No way. With a more powerful engine and better setup suspension, the Thar is in a different league. The Thar is capable, where Jimny is cute.
Off-road, can the Jimny really compete with the Mahindra Thar?
31 December 2024 09:03
Absolutely! Lightweight and small enough, the Jimny is much more nimble off road. The Thar is too bulky to go there, but the Hilux can.
Off-road, can the Jimny really compete with the Mahindra Thar?
31 December 2024 09:03
They don’t compete, they excel in different areas. On tight trails and forest roads, the Jimny is better than the Thar, and on more open, challenging terrain the Thar is the better choice.
