Is the Mahindra Thar 4x2 LX Automatic a city slicker in disguise or a true off roader?

The 4x2 LX Automatic variant of Mahindra Thar has always been known to be a capable off roader, but with some purists questioning its off road capabilities in the new variant. Unlike its more rugged siblings, this version comes without the 4x4 system and low range gearbox. It is equipped for a rear wheel drive and features an automatic transmission, which is more suitable for urban areas. The question is whether the new variant continues the Thar's adventurous nature or merely capitalizes on the model's popularity for those who want the look without the off road functionality. It's a good move to attract a wider customer base, say some, while others feel that it waters down the very identity of a Thar. The question also raises a more general trend: SUVs are becoming more about the city and less about the off road.

It's still a Thar at heart. It has an untold high ground clearance and a robust build such that it can maneuver rough terrain better than many city SUVs. Not everyone's weekend getaways need 4x4 either.

Nah, it's just a poser. It's like a tiger without claws without 4x4. Mahindra has sold out the Thar’s legacy for a few extra bucks from mall crawlers.

Mahindra is doing a smart thing. What they are doing is making the Thar accessible to people who love the looks but don’t need hardcore off road capabilities. But it’s still more capable than most crossovers out there.

It's a compromise, I would say, but not a bad one. Mild off roading can be handled while remaining comfortable for daily use. Many buyers find it to be the best of both worlds.

Most 4x4 owners never use the feature anyway, so let’s be real about it. For 90% of users, this variant makes more sense and probably has better fuel economy too.

It's definitely more city oriented but that doesn't make it any less of a Thar. It’s a tamed version of a wild animal, still cool, just more practical for everyday life.

I think it's genius. This allows Mahindra to grow their market without having to totally redesign the vehicle. It's the Thar DNA, just in a different lifestyle.
