What is the KTM 890 Adventure like when ridden two-up with a passenger and luggage?

It's doable, but not ideal. With a passenger and full luggage, the bike feels a bit overwhelmed. Short trips are fine, but I would need something bigger for extended two-up touring.

We love touring on our 890. It’s not as plush as a big 1200cc bike, but it’s more than capable and much more fun on twisty roads.

It struggles a bit on the stock suspension when fully loaded. If you are going to be doing a lot of two-up riding, I would upgrade the rear shock.

All of this is managing expectations. If you are used to a Gold Wing, you will be disappointed. With a passenger, however, it does just fine compared to other middleweight ADV bikes.
What is the KTM 890 Adventure like when ridden two-up with a passenger and luggage?

The 890 is a great compromise, I find. Small enough to be a blast solo, but not so small that it isn’t capable of passenger duty when needed. Just pack light!

The bike has more than enough power for two up, but the passenger could have better wind protection. You might want to look into a taller screen.

In fact, I like the 890 two-up more than my old 1090 Adventure. With that weight, it feels more nimble and easier to maneuver.
Is all that extra cost worth it for the KTM 890 Adventure R over the standard model for mostly street riding?
15 January 2025 07:42
In truth, the standard 890 Adventure is more than enough for mostly street riding. The R's higher seat and stiffer suspension may actually work against long highway stretches.
Is all that extra cost worth it for the KTM 890 Adventure R over the standard model for mostly street riding?

I'd say go for the R. Even if you're not hardcore off-roading, the better suspension makes a huge difference in ride quality on rough pavement and bumpy back roads.

It all depends on your budget. The R's upgrades are nice to have, even if you don't use them to their full potential, but if you can swing the extra cash, the standard model is great.

I own the R model and mostly ride street, so I kind of regret not getting the standard version. The extra features are cool, but I don’t really use them all the way.
Is all that extra cost worth it for the KTM 890 Adventure R over the standard model for mostly street riding?
15 January 2025 07:42
It’s worth the R just for the looks. Plus, you never know what kind of terrain you may want to tackle. It is better to have the capability and not need it than to need it and not have it.

I would say save your money and get the standard model. Use that difference on some nice luggage or other upgrades that will actually benefit your riding style.

Even on the street, the R's suspension is a game changer. It takes potholes and rough roads, and it soaks them up like nothing else. I definitely think the extra cost is worth it.
Where does the KTM 890 Adventure sit in terms of reliability compared to Japanese alternatives such as the Yamaha Tenere 700?

I’ve put 20,000 miles on my 890 Adventure with no issues. Modern bikes are pretty solid across the board, and people love to bash KTM reliability.

The T7 is undoubtedly more bulletproof. My Tenere hasn't skipped a beat, while my buddy's 890 is on its second trip to the shop for electrical gremlins.

KTMs are more maintenance intensive, but if you keep on top of it, they are very reliable. In my book, the performance trade-off is worth it.

I think it really boils down to the bike and how the bike is treated. I’ve seen Yamahas and KTMs with issues. Any brand needs regular maintenance.

The 890 is reliable enough, but if something goes wrong, parts are a nightmare to find. You can usually find parts at least with Japanese bikes.

I've owned both, and the KTM is just better in every way overall. It’s a more capable machine in my experience, but yes, it needs more attention.
