Is the Verna's DCT transmission a deal breaker?
03 January 2025 07:34
For me, the risk is worth the performance of the DCT. A CVT is boring, but it makes the car so much more fun to drive.
Is the Verna's DCT transmission a deal breaker?

If only Hyundai had a traditional automatic option. The DCT is nice but I’d sleep better at night with a proven torque converter.
Is the Verna's DCT transmission a deal breaker?

It’s not a deal breaker, but it’s definitely something to think about carefully. Do your research and see if you’re comfortable with the possible risks.
Is the DCT transmission on the Verna a deal breaker?

I can’t live without the DCT. I’ve heard too many horror stories of failures and expensive repairs. I’d rather have a trusted CVT or torque converter.
Is the DCT transmission on the Verna a deal breaker?

I guess people are overreacting. DCTs have improved a lot from their earlier days. And Hyundai's warranty should take care of any big problems.

How much gas you use depends on your driving style. If you’re mostly on highways, the DCT is great. I wouldn't be nervous about the wear and tear for city driving.
Is the DCT transmission on the Verna a deal breaker?

I have had Verna with DCT for a year, and it is great. Just don't creep in traffic and follow the manual and you'll be fine.

For me, the risk of the DCT is worth the performance. The car is much more fun to drive than a boring CVT.

I wish that Hyundai had at least a traditional automatic option. DCT is nice, but I’d have a better night’s sleep with a proven torque converter.

It's not a deal breaker, but it's definitely a thing to seriously think about. Make sure you do your research, and if you’re okay with the risk.
Is the Kona Electric's relatively slow DC fast charging a road trip killer?
02 January 2025 12:05
It is definitely slower than I would like, but it works. When I travel, I just plan my trips carefully and use the charging stops as breaks to stretch and get food. It’s not ideal, but it’s not a deal breaker either.
Is the Kona Electric's relatively slow DC fast charging a road trip killer?
02 January 2025 12:05
My biggest complaint about the Kona is slow charging. Daily driving is fine, but road trips are a pain. I’ve had to sit at chargers for over an hour just to get enough range to make it to the next stop. Here, newer EVs have a big advantage.
Is the Kona Electric's relatively slow DC fast charging a road trip killer?
02 January 2025 12:05
I honestly think we obsess with charging speeds too much. That's how efficient the Kona is that you don't need to charge as often as some other EV. Realistically, how many people are really doing those super long road trips?
Is the Kona Electric's relatively slow DC fast charging a road trip killer?
02 January 2025 12:05
It's a trade-off. The Kona is annoying with slower charging on trips but I think the price and range make up for it. I’d rather have a longer range and charge less often than a shorter range and charge more often.
Is the Kona Electric's relatively slow DC fast charging a road trip killer?

That said, as someone who road trips a lot, it’s definitely a limitation. It's not as bad as some people make it sound. The Kona can still do 75 kW pretty consistently, better than some EVs that quickly throttle down. It takes good planning.
Is the BYD Dolphin’s slower DC charging speed impractical for road trips?
02 January 2025 06:25
For most people, it’s not a big deal. Do you really do it that often? 80 kW is plenty fast for daily use and weekend getaways.
Is the BYD Dolphin’s slower DC charging speed impractical for road trips?
02 January 2025 06:25
I believe that is a big disadvantage. If you are spending this much on an EV, you would like the flexibility to go farther without having to stop so much. It's a dealbreaker for me.
Is the BYD Dolphin’s slower DC charging speed impractical for road trips?
02 January 2025 06:25
It's all about perspective. I came from a first gen Leaf, 80 kW feels lightning fast! And it’s better for the battery long term to charge a little bit slower.
Is the BYD Dolphin’s slower DC charging speed impractical for road trips?
02 January 2025 06:25
Charging speed is fine, but there is simply not enough infrastructure to charge in many places. If you fix that, 80 kW becomes a much less of a problem.
Is the BYD Dolphin’s slower DC charging speed impractical for road trips?
02 January 2025 06:25
If I get more longevity in the battery, I’d rather have a slower charge speed. LFP batteries are supposed to last forever and I think the slow charging helps that.
