Volkswagen Tiguan
Volkswagen Model
General information and overview
The Tiguan R-Line sold in India is the 2.0-litre TSI EVO petrol with a 7-speed DSG and Volkswagen’s 4MOTION AWD, producing around 204 PS and aimed at buyers seeking premium build, strong mid-range performance and advanced driver assists; Volkswagen packages a modern, largely buttonless dashboard with a 15-inch infotainment screen, a configurable digital instrument cluster and ambient lighting to lift the cabin ambience to near-luxury levels. It comes with a long equipment list including multiple airbags, hill‑hold and descent assist and a Level‑2 ADAS suite with around 21 functions in Indian specification, which is a differentiator in the segment. The chassis is tuned for precision with Dynamic Chassis Control Pro on higher trims, giving excellent cornering composure and body control, but the suspension setup and 19‑inch tyres make the ride feel firm on uneven Indian roads and increase tyre/road noise, so I advise prospective buyers to test long urban routes and consider switching to higher‑profile tyres if comfort matters most. Interior space is good with optional third-row flexibility in some markets, but in India the emphasis is on a premium two‑row experience combining strong highway manners, solid NVH and a premium feel that commands a commensurate price and ownership cost.
I view the Tiguan R-Line as a compact premium SUV built around a 2.0‑litre TSI EVO turbo petrol engine producing around 200+ PS paired with a 7‑speed DSG and Volkswagen’s 4MOTION AWD system, offering strong mid-range punch, rapid shifts and composed handling thanks to the DCC Pro adaptive suspension and progressive steering. The interior is minimalistic and well-executed with large digital displays, ambient lighting and generally high-quality materials, though some buyers in this price bracket will miss electrically adjustable seats and a few convenience items. Practical aspects include a usable third-row option in some markets and good space for passengers, plus solid passive safety and ADAS features on the spec list, while negatives I factor in are a firmer ride on badly surfaced Indian roads, tyre choice sensitivity (19" rims can transmit more road shock and be vulnerable to cuts) and the requirement for premium-grade petrol which raises running costs. In short, I find the Tiguan R-Line best suited to buyers who prioritise refined turbo performance, strong highway manners and premium build rather than the softest ride or lowest ownership cost in India.
Expert opinion and recommendation
I find the Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line to be a compelling premium compact SUV that prioritises composed handling, high-quality cabin materials and strong highway performance, though its steep price and firm ride on typical Indian roads temper its appeal. I appreciate the taut chassis, 4MOTION grip and confident steering that make the Tiguan feel planted through corners and relaxed on long runs. The cabin quality and feature set — including a large digital dash, 15-inch touchscreen and available Level‑2 ADAS — give it a near-luxury feel, but some omissions (manual seat adjustments, a few missing convenience features) and tyre/suspension tuning that favour firmness over comfort are notable for buyers who face city potholes and poor surfacing frequently. For buyers who value driving dynamics, build quality and safety technology over soft urban ride compliance, the Tiguan R-Line is an attractive choice; for those prioritising value per rupee or plush urban comfort, rivals and lower-priced premium SUVs remain worth considering.
I find the Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line to be a GRACEFUL and capable premium compact SUV that prioritises composed high-speed stability, refined power delivery and a well-finished cabin for Indian buyers; the 2.0 TSI EVO engine with 7‑speed DSG and 4MOTION gives me confident, punchy performance on highways and winding roads while the DCC Pro adaptive damping keeps the body flat through corners, though the ride can feel firm on broken city surfaces and the omission of some expected luxury touches (like powered seat adjustments in this price band) and a higher asking price temper my enthusiasm. I appreciate the strong NVH insulation, crisp steering and high build quality that make daily driving and long tours effortless, but I would caution buyers sensitive to firmer ride compliance, cost of ownership for a CBU-level premium and the relative value versus rivals when deciding to buy. Overall, I consider it a rewarding driver-focused premium SUV if you prioritise dynamics, refinement and safety equipment over the softest ride and absolute bargain pricing.
Recent news and announcements
The 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan has been awarded 5 stars in the Euro NCAP safety assessment, particularly excelling in child occupant protection. This rating underscores the Tiguans safety features and makes it a reliable choice for families. I think this is a significant selling point for the Tiguan.
Volkswagen has revealed that the new Tiguan will be available with various powertrain options, including plug-in hybrid, mild-hybrid, and turbodiesel engines. The plug-in hybrid models will offer electric ranges of over 100 km. This variety should appeal to a broader range of buyers. I believe the plug-in hybrid option will be particularly popular.
Volkswagen has introduced long-range plug-in hybrid drives for the Tiguan, available from 48,655 Euros. These models offer two outputs (150 kW and 200 kW) and are part of the new evolutionary stage of the eHybrid powertrain. Im impressed by the range these hybrids offer.
The 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan has been spotted at the IAA Munich auto show, showcasing its new design in the R-Line specification, particularly highlighting the plug-in hybrid version. This new model features updated tech and a more refined look. I think the R-Line trim adds a nice touch of sportiness to the Tiguan.
Volkswagen has announced that the 2024 Tiguan will come with previously optional driver assistance features now standard across all trims, including adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. This move enhances safety and convenience for all buyers. I believe this is a great step towards making advanced safety features more accessible.
Pricing details and changes
Ex-showroom prices for the Tiguan R-Line in India vary by city and variant shading, but the R-Line has been listed in the premium-luxury bracket around Rs 49–62 lakh ex-showroom in recent Indian coverage and reviews, with reports of on-road prices reaching about Rs 50 lakh to over Rs 62 lakh depending on city taxes, insurance and optional packages. I would expect an on-road price differential of roughly 8–15% over ex-showroom after state GST, RTO registration and insurance are applied — higher in metros with larger registration fees — which often places the on-road figure closer to the upper end reported in user feedback and regional dealer pricing. When assessing the price I balance the Tiguan’s strong NVH, 2.0 TSI performance, 4MOTION AWD and ADAS equipment against the premium asking price and the fact that some convenience features (like full electric seat adjustment) are absent at this money; for urban buyers who want maximum feature density per rupee, some rivals undercut the Tiguan, but for buyers prioritising dynamics, build quality and ADAS, the Tiguan can justify its premium if the ownership budget includes higher service/parts expectations for an imported/upper-segment model.
I see the Tiguan R-Line positioned in the upper-premium bracket in India with on-road pricing reported around Rs 49–62 lakh depending on city and reports of different dealer-markups and CBU economics. Ex-showroom prices for the Tiguan R-Line in 2025 have been published in the high-Rs 40 lakh range while on-road costs (registration, insurance, state taxes and dealer handling) typically push the final price toward the high Rs 40s to low Rs 60s in metros; this wide band reflects state-by-state registration differences and optional accessories or extended warranties. From my perspective, that pricing means the Tiguan sits against near-luxury SUVs that may offer more features or room for a similar money, so the purchase makes most sense if you value Volkswagen's ride/handling character, build quality and the specific 4MOTION/TSI drivetrain rather than only headline value; I also factor in higher fuel cost (premium petrol requirement), possible higher tyre and suspension wear on Indian roads and the potential for higher servicing or parts lead-time if supply is constrained, all of which influence the true running cost beyond the sticker.
Fuel efficiency information
Real-world fuel economy for the Tiguan’s 2.0 TSI with 7-speed DSG and AWD typically ranges in the mid to high single digits to low teens kmpl in mixed Indian driving (urban stop‑start will be significantly lower; steady highway cruising yields the best figures), and owners report that cylinder deactivation and efficient gearing help on highways but city running is thirsty compared with compact petrol SUVs. If running costs and high city mileage are your priority, I recommend calculating expected monthly fuel spend using conservative city kmpl estimates and considering alternatives with smaller engines, diesel or hybrids for lower operating cost.
Real-world figures I’ve seen for the Tiguan R-Line in India are around 10–12 kmpl in mixed driving, with manufacturers’ urban/highway figures higher but achievable highway consumption noticeably better while city use and 4MOTION/all-wheel-drive operation drop efficiency; because it requires 95 RON/premium petrol, I expect higher per-km fuel expense, so if your priority is lowest running cost or very high daily city mileage, there are more economical alternatives, but if you value performance and refinement the fuel cost trade-off is predictable and manageable with careful driving and highway use.

Expert Verdict
Professional reviews and expert opinions on Volkswagen Tiguan
Tiguan is a crossover SUV produced by Volkswagen. It’s quite popular worldwide but it’s yet to mark its presence on our Indian roads. However, the 2013 variant of Tiguan may soon be launched in India. Let’s check out more about this new SUV in detail.
Exterior
Tiguan borrows styling cues from its elder sibling, Touareg which is certainly an advantage for this SUV. The daytime running LED stripes look fantastic in its edgy headlights. The twin layered chrome finished front grille comes with a big VW logo at its center which makes it a typical VW car. The restyled bumper now features sharp lines and new surrounds for its round shaped fog lights which make it look aerodynamic when seen from the front. The black cladding all around this car adds to the sporty character of Tiguan. The wide bonnet merges nicely into its front windshield which takes you to the top of this SUV. The silver finished roof rails, large doors and 19 inches alloy wheels gives macho look to Tiguan. The horizontally placed long tail lights of Tiguan go well with its compact rear look. There is no spare wheel mounted on its boot gate similar to its elder sibling and comes with an integrated rear spoiler and wiper. The black colored lower section of its rear bumper reduces the visual bulk from this SUV.
Interior
The dual tone interiors of Tiguan give you the luxurious feel inside its cabin. The airy cabin can easily occupy five adults. There are enough amounts of leg room, shoulder room and head room in this SUV. The silver finishing on door trims complements the dual tone color scheme inside. The top quality of leather and fabrics also make it feel much premium than its segment. The wide seats of Tiguan give you proper under thigh and back support. The leather stitched steering wheel also feels quite soft to touch. VW also offers a big sun-roof in Tiguan which makes it look up-market.
Comfort and Convenience
Tiguan comes with comfort features like power windows, electrically adjustable front seats, ORVMs, leather seats with rear centre armrest, Dual zone automatic climate control, keyless entry with star/stop button and much more.
Dashboard and Storage
The dual tone dashboard of Tiguan is made of premium quality of plastic and feels quite soft to touch. The buttons placed on its central console are very easy to use and add premium touch to this car. The round shaped dials in its instrument console look attractive with its round shaped AC vents. Tiguan features cup holders in its floor console and rear centre arm rest. The roomy door pockets can also be used frequently. The dashboard of Tiguan comes with an integrated air-cooled lockable glove box which can carry your essentials. With its flat floor foldable seats, you get a lot of cargo space in Tiguan.
Music System
The central console of Tiguan features a touch screen audio system with powerful speakers. It’s a 6CD changer which plays radio/MP3/MP4 and comes with SD card reader. The MDI with iPod gives you easy connectivity with the car. The touch screen navigation system and Bluetooth connectivity with voice command activation are also some of its vital features. Audio and Bluetooth controls are mounted on its three spoke steering wheel.
Engine and Gearbox
It’s still not clear if Tiguan makes its way to India then what will be the engine options but as speculated, this SUV may be launched with two different engines, one each of petrol and diesel. The turbo charged 2.0L 4-cylinders petrol engine is likely to produce a peak power of 170 bhp at 6000 rpm. The torque output of this liquid-cooled DOHC engine is of 285 Nm which ranges from 1700-5000 rpm. The diesel unit is also 2.L TDI 4-cylinders engine which generates a maximum power output of 170 bhp at 4200 rpm. The utmost torque output of this 16valves engine is of 356 Nm which starts coming at 1750 rpm. These both engines will be available with a six-speed manual as well as automatic transmission.
Acceleration and Performance
Both engines of Tiguan are very powerful and refined. The light weight of Tiguan also improves its performance significantly. The impressive power to weight ratio help the petrol version to reach 0-100km/hr in less than 8 seconds whereas the diesel version takes only 9.5 seconds to reach the speed of 100km/hr from standstill. The automatic variants are slightly faster than the manual variants. Both engines of Tiguan have the potential to cross the speed mark of 200km/hr.
Mileage and Safety Features
Fuel figures are not out yet. Tiguan comes loaded with safety features like six airbags, ESC, park assist and intelligent crash response system.
Suspension and Brakes
Tiguan features independent suspension system at its both ends which adjusts itself as per the conditions. Tiguan is equipped with electromechanical parking brake and disc brakes on all wheels. It also features ABS with EBD and brake assist.
Ride and Handling
Tiguan has a wheelbase of 2603mm which along with its independent suspension system and wide tyres provide firm grip to this SUV around corners. There is minimal body roll around corners which further gets reduced with all-wheel drive system. The all-around visibility and short overhangs makes it easy for you to handle it in city traffic. The high ground clearance and all-wheel drive system also makes it a good off road vehicle. The light handling plays a vital role while off roading and in city conditions. The braking system also provides you precise braking which is quite useful while driving in city traffic.
Shades, Variants and Warranty
Shades, variants and warranty are yet to be disclosed.
Verdict
Tiguan is a very impressive SUV from VW which completely justifies the brand’s high reputation. If Tiguan makes its way to India then its biggest competitors will be Toyota Fortuner, Chevrolet Captiva and Ford Endeavour. Tiguan seems to have everything what it takes to give a tough competition to these established players and if priced competitively, then we certainly feel it will be a complete value for money car.
