General information and overview

The Volkswagen T-Roc is a premium compact SUV imported as a CBU offering a unique blend of sharp, coupe-like styling and functional practicality. It builds on the MQB Evo platform and features a 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol engine available in two tunes, including a 150 PS variant producing 250 Nm torque, paired exclusively with a 7-speed DSG automated gearbox. The cabin impresses with a modern minimalist design highlighted by a large 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, digital cockpit, and driver-focused ergonomics. The interior benefits from upscale finishes, fabric and leather trim options, and optional massage seats that add to comfort. Safety is robust, with a 5-star Global NCAP rating, electronic stability control, six airbags, and driver-assistance technologies standard. The T-Roc’s driving dynamics combine confident handling, precise steering, and a well-tuned suspension setup that soaks up typical Indian road imperfections without compromising on highway stability. It is larger than before, providing more cabin space and a competitive 465-litre boot capacity, making it a practical yet premium lifestyle SUV option for discerning buyers interested in exclusivity and refinement.

The Volkswagen T-Roc in India is a premium compact SUV that fits well between the popular Polo/Vento and the larger Tiguan in VW’s lineup. Based on the MQB Evo platform, it features a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a mild-hybrid (48V) system generating either 114 or 148 hp, but the flagship variant available now produces 150 Bhp and 250 Nm torque. Paired with a slick 7-speed DSG gearbox, the powertrain delivers a smooth and fun-to-drive character. The SUV’s design is distinct with sharp lines, a coupe-like rear roofline, and LED light bars that enhance its road presence. Interior quality is top-notch with a minimalist yet modern layout, dominated by a large 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a digital instrument cluster. Comfort features include supportive seats, optional massage function, and an elevated driving position offering excellent visibility. Safety is comprehensive with six airbags, ESC, TPMS, lane assist, and hill-start assist. Its compact dimensions yet spacious cabin and 465-litre boot capacity make it practical for daily use. The T-Roc appeals to buyers looking for a premium, safe, and engaging SUV with strong German engineering credentials in the Indian market.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

The Volkswagen T-Roc strikes a fine balance between style, performance, and premium features, making it a compelling choice in the compact SUV segment in India. The 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine with 150 Bhp and 250 Nm torque paired with a smooth 7-speed DSG gearbox delivers a punchy and engaging drive, particularly suited for highway cruising and city commutes alike. I appreciate its poised handling with minimal body roll and the firm but comfort-oriented suspension setup that is well suited for Indian roads, though it can be a bit firm over bigger potholes. The cabin offers a refined, classy design with a modern digital cockpit and an infotainment system that favors driver ergonomics. Safety is a highlight with a 5-star Global NCAP rating, 6 airbags, ESC, and advanced driver-assist features like lane assist and frontal collision warning. The T-Roc’s exclusivity and distinct design language in India add to its appeal despite being a CBU offering, as Volkswagen keeps it reasonably priced compared to European variants. Its silent cabin and precise steering make it a great package for those valuing refinement and driving enjoyment in the premium compact SUV space.

The Volkswagen T-Roc stands out as a well-rounded compact SUV in India, blending classy design, solid build, and an engaging driving experience. Powered by a rev-happy 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine delivering 150 Bhp and 250 Nm, mated with a 7-speed DSG, it offers responsive acceleration and smooth shifts. Its handling is poised, with minimal body roll and excellent highway stability, though it feels firm over city potholes and speed breakers. The interior impresses with a quality feel, a large active info display, and driver-focused ergonomics without unnecessary flashy panels. Safety is top-notch, including six airbags, ESC, lane assist, and a 5-star Global NCAP rating, which is reassuring. The T-Roc’s road presence is unique in its segment, appealing to those wanting exclusivity alongside practical refinement. While it isn't the cheapest, the premium price is justified by the build quality, driving dynamics, and comprehensive safety. For buyers looking for a premium compact SUV with a sporty temperament and confident road manners, the T-Roc is a compelling choice. The mild LED and modern infotainment keep it contemporary, although the ride firmness in urban conditions is a trade-off to consider.

Latest Updates

Recent news and announcements

The Volkswagen T-Roc has been discontinued in India, with the last recorded price standing at Rs 21.35 lakh ex-showroom[1][2][3]. During its time in the Indian market, this compact premium SUV offered a 1.5-litre TSI EVO turbocharged petrol engine producing 147.94 bhp and 250 Nm of torque, paired exclusively with a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission and front-wheel drive[1][2]. The vehicle delivered an ARAI-rated mileage of 18.4 kmpl, though real-world city driving yielded around 14.14 kmpl[1]. What impressed me about the T-Roc was its premium cabin quality, featuring an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, dual-zone climate control, and a panoramic sunroof across its single variant offering[2]. The SUV measured 4,234 mm in length with a 2,590 mm wheelbase, accommodating five passengers comfortably[1]. Safety was a strong point, earning a 5-star Euro NCAP rating[4]. However, the T-Roc's premium pricing positioned it above mass-market compact SUVs like the Hyundai Creta, which ultimately limited its appeal in the Indian market and contributed to its discontinuation. For buyers seeking a similar segment vehicle today, alternatives like the MG Hector or Kia Seltos offer more features at competitive pricing.

The Volkswagen T-Roc has established itself as a compelling entry in India's premium compact SUV segment since its launch at Rs 19.99 lakh. I find it to be a thoughtfully engineered vehicle that delivers European quality without excessive complexity. The 1.5-litre TSI engine producing 150 PS and 250 Nm paired with the 7-speed DSG transmission strikes an impressive balance between performance and efficiency, returning 18.4 kmpl in real-world conditions. What sets it apart for me is the refined driving dynamics, particularly the responsive steering that builds confidence at highway speeds while remaining manageable in city traffic. The cabin impresses with its 8-inch touchscreen featuring Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, dual-zone climate control, and a panoramic sunroof that elevates the sense of premium positioning. Safety credentials are solid with six airbags and features like Lane Keep Assist, though the latter requires adaptation for Indian driving conditions. The panoramic sunroof and heated front seats add tangible comfort, though I feel the absence of wireless charging at this price point is a missed opportunity. For buyers seeking a German-engineered compact SUV with genuine driving pleasure and modern conveniences, the T-Roc delivers meaningful value against its competitors in the fifteen to twenty lakh price bracket.

I've been tracking the Volkswagen T-Roc closely in India, and while the second-generation 2026 model unveiled globally promises exciting updates like a larger 4,373mm body, extended wheelbase for better rear space, and mild-hybrid 1.5 TSI engines starting at 116hp with 7-speed DSG, there's no official launch confirmation here yet as of early 2026. The current imported version remains the single 1.5 TSI variant priced around Rs 21.35 lakh ex-showroom, delivering 150PS and 250Nm from its 1498cc turbo-petrol engine paired to a slick 7-speed DSG automatic with front-wheel drive, achieving about 17-18 kmpl ARAI mileage. It stands out with premium touches like an 8-inch touchscreen supporting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, heated seats, and a 10.25-inch digital cluster, though it misses cruise control. Safety is solid with 5-star Euro NCAP roots, including lane keep assist. This CBU import sold out fast back in 2020 at Rs 19.99 lakh introductory pricing due to its confident stance and engaging drive, but with no fresh stock announced, enthusiasts await if Volkswagen brings the hybrid upgrades or relaunches locally to rival Creta and Seltos in the premium compact SUV space.
February 18, 2026
I've been tracking the Volkswagen T-Roc closely in India, and as of early 2026, it remains a compelling premium compact SUV powered solely by a 1.5-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine delivering 150PS and 250Nm, paired exclusively with a slick 7-speed DSG automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. Priced around Rs 21.35 to 24.52 lakh ex-showroom, it holds its ground with an ARAI-certified mileage of 17.85-18.4 kmpl, though real-world figures hover closer to 15 kmpl in mixed conditions. The cabin impresses with a tilted 8-inch touchscreen supporting wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 10.25-inch digital cluster, dual-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof, heated front seats, and six airbags, earning it a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating that's reassuring on our chaotic roads. I love how the peppy motor and precise steering make it fun to hustle through city traffic or highways, with composed handling and minimal body roll, but the lack of adaptive cruise control and wireless charging feels like a miss at this price. No hybrid variants or facelifts have hit Indian shores yet despite global buzz, so it's still the reliable first-gen model blending German build quality with everyday usability for enthusiasts seeking that premium edge over mainstream rivals.
February 18, 2026
Volkswagen has been testing the next-generation T-Roc, disguising it with fake grille details to mimic the current model’s design. The new T-Roc is expected to have a slim grille similar to recent VW models and features a curvier design with slimmer rear lights. The production pause due to a lack of engine parts has not affected the development of the new model. I believe the new design will appeal to a wider audience.

Price

Pricing details and changes

In India, the Volkswagen T-Roc is priced ex-showroom between approximately Rs. 28 lakh to Rs. 32 lakh depending on the variant and features chosen. The on-road price, which includes registration, insurance, and taxes, typically ranges from about Rs. 31 lakh to Rs. 36 lakh in major metro cities. Considering this vehicle is a CBU (completely built unit) imported from Europe, the pricing is competitive against rivals offering locally assembled vehicles with similar features. Volkswagen has positioned the T-Roc slightly above mainstream compact SUVs due to its premium build quality, advanced technology, and powerful mild-hybrid powertrains coupled with the 7-speed DSG gearbox. This pricing places it in niche premium territory rivaling the likes of the Skoda Kushaq and higher trims of the Hyundai Tucson. The value proposition holds, given the comprehensive safety equipment, distinctive styling, and the exclusivity derived from it being an import, but buyers need to weigh this against the higher acquisition and maintenance cost compared to locally assembled alternatives.
November 30, 2025
In India, the Volkswagen T-Roc commands a premium with the 1.5-litre TSI DSG variant priced around Rs. 33-36 lakh ex-showroom, depending on the city. On-road prices, including RTO, insurance, and handling charges, push the figure closer to Rs. 37-39 lakh in metros like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore. Compared to other premium compact SUVs, the T-Roc is positioned at the higher end, reflecting its completely built-up unit (CBU) import status and the Volkswagen badge appeal. This price bracket puts it in rivalry with slightly larger or similarly equipped SUVs from European and luxury marques. The premium on-road price is significant but justified given the T-Roc’s positioning as a niche offering with superior build quality, advanced features like the 7-speed DSG, and a spacious, well-equipped cabin. For Indian buyers keen on exclusivity and superior driving experience without stepping into the full-fledged luxury SUV segment, the T-Roc’s pricing is competitive. However, for value seekers, alternatives from local assembly might offer lower prices but won't match the T-Roc’s German engineering and safety credentials.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

The Volkswagen T-Roc’s mild-hybrid 1.5-litre petrol engine returns an estimated mileage of around 16-17 km/l under real-world Indian driving conditions, balancing performance with fuel efficiency. For buyers prioritizing running costs and mileage, the mild-hybrid system provides better fuel economy especially in city traffic through features like start-stop and energy recuperation, mitigating the fuel penalty typically associated with turbo petrol engines. While not the most frugal SUV on the market, it offers a reasonable operating cost if you appreciate a peppy drive with premium features.
November 30, 2025
The Volkswagen T-Roc’s real-world mileage in India hovers around 14-16 km/l depending on driving conditions, with the mild-hybrid system helping to optimize fuel efficiency in city traffic through start-stop and energy recuperation features. While it may not be the most frugal in its class, the efficient 1.5 TSI petrol engine and 7-speed DSG keep running costs manageable. For buyers prioritizing low fuel consumption, it is advisable to balance performance expectations with fuel economy, as the T-Roc leans towards offering more driving pleasure and refinement rather than outright mileage leadership.

Overview

Volkswagen's India lineup has previously included SUVs such as the mid-size Tiguan and the premium Touareg. With the demand for compact SUVs increasing in recent years, the manufacturer introduced the T-Roc as a CBU (fully constructed unit). It comes in a single, fully loaded form.

The T-Roc 2021 oozes character and confidence, being strong, striking, and sporty. It's an SUV that's as confident as you are. Volkswagen has created the T-Roc for a confident you, with a bold design carved into every element and packed with sophisticated technology.

Volkswagen T-Roc Design and Style

Volkswagen has opted for a more traditional approach with the front grilles instead of following the trend. A two-slat grille with a chrome strip extending from one headlamp unit to the other is standard on the T-Roc. Twin-pod LED headlights flank it, with LED DRLs which surround the faux air inlets and also function as turn indicators and fog lamps hidden beside the honeycomb-pattern-like air dam in the front bumper.

Volkswagen has fitted the new T-Roc with 17-inch dual-tone alloy wheels that sit comfortably in the wheel arches. A chrome strip runs from the A-pillar to the C-pillar, enhancing the SUV's upscale appearance. When viewed from the side, it emphasises the SUV's dual-tone colour. The rear has a sloping roofline and traditional Volkswagen-style LED tail lamp modules. VW logo and 'T-Roc' inscription are in the centre of the tailgate and it receives rear fog lamps and faux air dams with chrome surround in the back bumper.

Volkswagen T-Roc Engine and Gearbox

The compact premium SUV is a petrol-only model powered by the Skoda-Volkswagen Group's 1.5-litre, four-cylinder TSI EVO engine paired to a 7-speed DSG transmission. T-Roc’s engine produces 150 HP and 250 Nm and comes with a front-wheel drivetrain. The engine is one of the market's most refined turbo-petrol engines. It is smooth in both the city and on the highway, and it even has paddle shifters for people who prefer more control over their vehicle. The SUV is an all-rounder, capable of giving performance and efficiency as needed.

Volkswagen has outfitted the new T-Roc with Active Cylinder Technology (ACT), which deactivates two of the four cylinders (depending on driving pattern) to reduce fuel consumption. The 'ECO' light in the top half of the MID will flash if it's operating. The beauty of this technology is that it is so smooth that you will never feel it activate while driving.

There are two drive modes available for the new T-Roc: Drive and Sport. The former is ideal for daily metropolitan commuting, with practically imperceptible gear adjustments. When the Sport mode is in action, the SUV becomes more responsive, with the engine revving all the way to the redline.

Volkswagen T-Roc Suspension, Brakes and Tyres

2023 Volkswagen T-Roc is an impressive drive as it comes with the Independent with coil spring at front and Twist beam axle with separate spring and shock absorber at the rear. Its finely adjusted suspension arrangement soaks in all the rough spots and uneven terrain, reducing noise and vibrations. The lightweight steering wheel instils confidence while also making it simple to manoeuvre the SUV around tight curves. However, at lower speeds, the suspension seems a little stiff. You may experience minor vibrations, particularly over speed bumps or uneven roadways. Volkswagen offers the T-Roc with 17-inch alloy wheels and the 215/55 R17 tyre section, with all the wheels aided by disc and both ends. When driving on the highway, Volkswagen's T-Roc feels at home. The SUV's robust chassis and suspension absorb all the bumps and undulations with ease. It remains comfortable even in turns, holding its line nicely with a little body roll.

Interior and Instrument Console of Volkswagen T-Roc

The SUV comes standard with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, dual-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, and a 6-speaker sound system from Volkswagen. However, there is no cruise control or wireless charger, T-Roc has an 8-inch touchscreen panel (slightly angled towards the driver) with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connection. The user interface is appealing, and the touchscreen device has a premium feel to it.

Close inspection of the VW Tiguan or its seven-seater variant will reveal parallels in the T-interior. T-Roc has an all-black interior with grey hues on the dashboard and centre console. Volkswagen has resorted to liberal use of hard plastics throughout the cabin, which detracts from the cabin's luxury feel. However, in terms of build quality, the T-Roc is on par with any other Volkswagen vehicle.

2023 T-Roc's upholstery has a three-tone finish, which brightens up the otherwise dull cabin. Its front seats are comfy, and the driver's seat provides a wonderful wide view of the road ahead. The driver's seat is adjustable and the headrests in the T-Roc are well-positioned in the back and should provide enough neck support on extended excursions. The rear seats are suitable for two adults and include conveniences such as an adjustable cup holder in the armrest, a 12V charging plug, and AC vents. While Volkswagen hollowed up the top to provide additional headroom in the rear.

Key Features of Volkswagen T-Roc

2023 Volkswagen T-Roc Key features include Panoramic sunroof, LED Headlamps, R17 Diamond Cut Alloy wheels, LED tail lamps, 2-Zone Air conditioning - Climatronic, Heat insulating windshield, Green heat insulated side & rear windows, Electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, Power windows, Automatic headlamp control, Coming home and leaving home function, Electromechanical parking brake, Rear Wash/Wipe with intermittent function, Illuminated sun visors, LED reading lights in front and rear, Drawers under front seats, Rain sensor, KESSY- Keyless entry and drive system, Washer fluid level warning light, Hill start assist, Leather wrapped steering wheel, Multifunction steering wheel, Start stop system with generative braking, Paddle shift, Digital cockpit - Active info display, Diversity antenna, AppConnect, USB interface, 6 speakers, Composition Media infotainment system, Driver and front passenger airbag, Front and rear disc brakes, Electronic Stability Control, Anti Lock braking system, Anti Skid Regulation, Electronic immobilizer, Park Distance Control Front and Rear, LED daytime running lights, Auto Hold, Auto dimming interior rear-view mirror, Rear view camera, Dynamic headlamp range adjustment, Rear fog lamp, Front fog lamp with cornering function, Tyre pressure monitoring system, Front seat belt pre-tensioners, Curtain airbags, Front side airbags, Seat belt warning, ISOFIX-Child seat anchor points and more.

Volkswagen T-Roc Colour Options

Volkswagen offers new T-Roc in 6 different colour options - Kurkuma Yellow, Pure White, Ravenna Blue, Indium Grey, Flash Red and Deep Black.

Volkswagen T-Roc Competitors

Jeep Compass, Skoda Kodiaq, Jeep Meridian and Hyundai Tucson are the top contenders in the market that rivals the new Volkswagen T-Roc.

Conclusion

If you want a car that delivers on luxury, engine refinement and driving enjoyment, the T-Roc fits the bill. However, if you're looking for a compact SUV with more amenities, greater space and comfort, and a lower price than the T-Roc, you could choose the Hyundai Creta or the Kia Seltos. Those interested in purchasing the T-Roc can contact their local Volkswagen dealer. Comprehensive warranty and service plan back to the CBU brought a vehicle, but we recommend the investigation regarding the availability and pricing of spare parts.
