Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (2020)
General information and overview
The 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado stands out in India as a rugged seven-seater 4x4 SUV built on a ladder-frame chassis with a 50% more rigid structure and 30% stiffer body, ensuring supreme durability on battered roads and extreme off-road escapades. I appreciate its 3.0L D4D diesel engine delivering 170.5Bhp at 3400rpm and 410Nm from 1600-2800rpm through a 5-speed automatic, full-time 4WD with diff locks, CRAWL control, and multi-terrain select, plus 220mm clearance for conquering floods, deserts, or mountains. Inside, the spacious cabin boasts premium leather, stadium seating, adjustable rears, 620L boot, multi-zone climate control, 360-degree camera, 7 airbags, VSC, and an 8-inch touchscreen—practical for family road trips across India. At 160kmph top speed and 87L tank, it's a reliable workhorse with excellent service support. Key aspects like bulletproof build, powerful low-end grunt, and versatile 4x4 system make it ideal for buyers seeking longevity over gadgets, though its heft suits adventurers more than daily commuters.
Expert opinion and recommendation
I find the 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado to be an unbeatable choice for anyone in India needing a true off-roader that doubles as a luxury family hauler. With its ladder-frame chassis, full-time 4WD, central and rear diff locks, CRAWL control, and multi-terrain select, I tackled the roughest Himalayan trails effortlessly, feeling the 220mm ground clearance and 2990kg kerb weight shrug off boulders and mud like they're nothing. The 3.0L D4D diesel pumps out 170.5Bhp and 410Nm, paired with a smooth 5-speed auto, delivering composed highway cruising up to 160kmph while keeping the spacious seven-seater cabin serene with leather seats, multi-zone AC, and a capable infotainment system. Build quality is Toyota's legendary bulletproof standard, backed by a vast service network, making long-term ownership hassle-free even in remote areas. Sure, it's not the quickest or most tech-laden against urban rivals, but for reliability, off-road prowess, and that commanding presence, I recommend it wholeheartedly to buyers prioritizing adventure over city slickness—it's a investment that holds value and conquers India's diverse terrains without compromise.
Recent news and announcements
The 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado received a significant update, including a more powerful 2.8-liter diesel engine that produces 200 DIN hp (147 kW) and 500 Nm of torque. This upgrade reduced the 0-100 km/h acceleration time to 9.9 seconds, an improvement of 3.0 seconds. The vehicle also features an upgraded multimedia system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and enhanced Toyota Safety Sense technologies. I think this update makes the Prado even more appealing for both on-road and off-road enthusiasts.
Toyota introduced a special Black Pack for the 2020 Land Cruiser Prado, which includes unique exterior styling cues such as a dark chrome front grille, black fog lamp bezels, and clear rear lamp clusters. This pack adds a touch of exclusivity to the vehicle. I believe this aesthetic enhancement will attract buyers looking for a distinctive look.
The 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado boasts a braked towing capacity of up to 3000 kg, making it a reliable choice for those who need to tow heavy loads. The towing capacity varies depending on the engine, transmission, and model configuration. Always check the specifications to ensure the capacity meets your needs.
The 2020 Land Cruiser Prado is available in various variants, including the GX, GXL, and Kakadu, each offering different features and specifications. The GX 7 Seat variant, for example, provides ample space for passengers and cargo. I think the range of options makes the Prado versatile for different user needs.
Toyota enhanced the safety features of the 2020 Land Cruiser Prado by adding the second generation of Toyota Safety Sense, which includes a Pre-Collision System with pedestrian and cyclist detection, and Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control. These updates significantly improve the vehicles safety profile.
Pricing details and changes
In India, the 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado commands a premium ex-showroom price hovering around Rs 1.2-1.5 crore depending on variant and location, reflecting its import status and exclusivity, though exact figures fluctuate with customs duties and dealer markups as it's not locally assembled. On-road costs push it to Rs 1.4-1.7 crore in major cities like Delhi or Mumbai, factoring in 28% GST, road tax up to 18%, insurance around Rs 5-7 lakh annually, and registration fees—making total ownership costs steep for most but justified for its class-leading durability. I see this pricing as a smart premium; rivals like Land Rover Discovery or Mercedes GLS demand similar or higher outlays with less proven longevity in Indian conditions, where potholes and monsoons test vehicles relentlessly. Resale holds strong at 70-80% after three years thanks to Toyota's reputation, offsetting running expenses better than flashier competitors. For high-net-worth adventurers, this isn't an expense—it's value for unmatched capability and peace of mind, especially with low depreciation in the used market around Rs 80 lakh-1 crore for well-maintained units.
Fuel efficiency information
I get realistic 9-11kmpl in mixed Indian driving with the 3.0L diesel, dropping to 8kmpl off-road but stretching to 12kmpl on highways—ARAI-certified at 11.13kmpl. For running costs, factor Rs 2.5-3/km on diesel; it's efficient for its 2990kg bulk and power, making it viable over pricier petrol alternatives if you prioritize torque for loads and trails over urban sipping.

Expert Verdict
Professional reviews and expert opinions on Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (2020)
In India, Prado came in existence in the year 2004. It was the third generation of this car which was launched by Toyota. Since then it has been doing really well here. With the rising competition from others like Audi, BMW and Mercedes, Toyota has launched the fourth generation of this car. Let’s try to know about the changes made to this new car.
Exterior
The grown up Toyota LC Prado looks much aggressive and bold than before. Gigantic wheel arches and ten-spoke 18 inch alloy wheels are simply irresistible. New Prado stands tall with its roof rails and side floor boards. The face carries the similar chromed front grille with new angular headlights with a huge bonnet. Revised front bumper sports a rectangular air dam with round shaped fog lights which are very similar to that of Fortuner. Rear of the car is more stylish featuring new clear lens tail lights which are relatively smaller than before. The in-built spoiler looks very trendy with its compact split boot gate which sports a big chrome bar just above the number plate.
Interior
Black color interiors are used in Land Cruiser Prado with black colored seats. You won’t find the interiors as luxury as you expect at this price. The texture and the plastic quality are on the hard side. However everything looks perfectly placed inside. It’s a very roomy car and offers maximum comfort inside. The car has a seating capacity of 6 people. Its tall height gives you generous headroom and its high seating makes other car look like toys on road when you are seating inside it. Legroom and shoulder room is perfect for all passengers.
Comfort and Convenience
Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is a very comfortable car offering optimum comfort and convenience. Seats of this car are very comfy similar to other Toyotas. The car is stuffed with many features like adjustable steering and driver seat with three- zone climate control and rear AC vents. It has power windows and electrically adjustable outside mirrors with in-built turn indicators. There are many other vital features like cruise control, big refrigerator at its front, electrically foldable rear seats and parking sensors with reverse camera, keyless entry and go.
Dashboard and Storage
Dashboard is mostly black in color with silver accent on it. Toyota Land Cruiser Prado has a stylish central console; AC vents and an air cooled glove box. There are cup holders for front and rear passengers, door pockets on all doors with back pocket on front seats. Prado has a roomy boot for luggage which can be increased by folding the rear rows of seats.
Music System
Toyota Land Cruiser Prado comes loaded with a powerful audio system with 9 speakers. This six CD changer plays radio, MP3 and has USB and AUX-in ports. Prado also has Bluetooth connectivity and steering mounted controls.
Engine and Gearbox
Toyota has blessed Prado with its 3.0L D-4D engine. This is the same engine used in Fortuner with different specifications. This powerful engine generates a maximum power output of 170 bhp at 3400 rpm with utmost torque production of 410 Nm at 1600 rpm. This engine is mated with a five-speed automatic gearbox.
Acceleration and Performance
In comparison to Fortuner, Prado generates more torque and it was very much needed because of its heavy weight. The car feels very nimble and responsive and it doesn’t let you feel its actual size. This engine responds with a little press of throttle. The power delivery is very linear and you don’t have to suffer any kind of turbo lag. This car picks up really well at low speeds and similar to Fortuner it pleases you while driving in city traffic. Refinement level has never been an issue with Toyota cars. It will take you almost 10 seconds to reach 0-100 km/hour and soon you will find yourself crossing a top speed of 180 km/hr. These figures speak for the car itself and its very impressive if we compare it with its competitors. Its five speed automatic gearbox gives you no room for complain. It’s very enthusiastic when it’s off road and with all-wheel drive system it is one of the best SUVs. It has downhill and hill start assist control with adaptive traction control system to give you a stress free off road experience.
Mileage
Looking at its heavy size and powerful engine, Prado may give you a mileage of around 7-8km/ltr in city conditions while on highways expect it to return you a mileage of around 9-10km/ltr.
Safety Features
Toyota Land Cruiser Prado comes with seven SRS airbags, vehicle stability control and solid body frame which provide you protection at the time of collision.
Suspension and Braking
The suspension system of this car makes it a good 4x4 vehicle. Its air suspension adjusts itself and it amuses you with its suspension quality on all terrains. Prado has ventilated disc brakes at its front with discs at the back. Moreover it features ABS with EBD and Brake assist.
Ride and Handling
The overall ride and handling quality of this vehicle on all terrains is very satisfactory. In city conditions it’s steering with a minimum turning radius of 5.8m also responses really well. With its massive ground clearance of 220mm and broad tyres, its ready to go everywhere and it offers you a very cheerful ride thanks to its superb suspension which eats almost every bump on road with ease.
Warranty
Toyota gives a warranty of 3 years/100000 kilometres on Prado.
Verdict
Toyota Land Cruiser Prado will surely impress you with its visual appearance, powerful and refined engine and it’s on and off road performance. We don’t find any problem in this car except for its pricing which we think will bother many. It leaves most of its actual competitors behind in terms of pricing and it may not work in the favour of this car. Otherwise with Toyota’s exceptional warranty, we find this car a complete value for money car as it has its own league which has a considerable fan following.
