Tata Magic Iris CNG
General information and overview
The Tata Magic Iris CNG is a compact, 4- or 5-seater microvan designed to meet the urban transportation needs in India. It is powered by a 611cc single-cylinder, water-cooled SI engine that produces 13.2 BHP at 3000 RPM and 39 Nm of torque at 1600-1800 RPM. The vehicle is compliant with BS IV emission norms and features a single-point gas injection system and leak-proof Swagelok joints for safety. The Magic Iris CNG measures 2960 mm in length, 1512 mm in width, and 1800 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 1650 mm. It offers two seating arrangements driver 4 passengers and driver co-driver 2 passengers. The vehicle also comes with hydraulically activated drum brakes, independent MacPherson strut suspension at the front, and coil spring suspension at the rear. With its eco-friendly design, comfortable seating, and efficient performance, the Magic Iris CNG is an excellent choice for taxi services, small family transportation, and other commercial passenger needs.
Expert opinion and recommendation
The Tata Magic Iris CNG is a robust and practical solution for urban transportation needs in India. My experience with this vehicle highlights its reliability and durability, which are crucial for commercial use. Tata Motors has subjected the Magic Iris CNG to rigorous reliability tests, ensuring it can withstand the harsh conditions of Indian roads. The single-cylinder, water-cooled SI engine, although not powerful, provides sufficient torque for its intended use. The vehicles eco-friendly nature, compliance with BS IV norms, and features like single-point gas injection and leak-proof Swagelok joints make it a safe and efficient choice. However, the limited availability of spare parts, as noted by some users, is a concern that needs to be addressed. Overall, the Magic Iris CNG is a solid option for those seeking a reliable, fuel-efficient, and environmentally friendly passenger carrier.
Recent news and announcements
Tata Motors has announced that the Tata Magic Iris CNG has been discontinued from production, marking the end of an era for this eco-friendly passenger carrier. The vehicle was known for its single cylinder dedicated CNG engine and compliance with BS IV norms. I think this move might be a step towards introducing more advanced and efficient models.
The Tata Magic Iris CNG was praised for its safety features, including Swagelok joints, stainless steel pipes, and a solenoid valve or ITVR for safe and oil-free gas operation. These features made it a reliable choice for last-mile public transport. I believe such attention to safety details is crucial for public transport vehicles.
With a market share of over 85% in the last mile passenger transport segment, the Tata Magic Iris CNG played a significant role in revolutionizing urban and rural transport in India. Its success was a testament to Tata Motors engineering excellence and customer orientation.
The Tata Magic Iris CNG boasted a larger CNG cylinder capacity of 53 litres, providing about 75% more capacity than typical three-wheelers, and offered a mileage of 32 km/kg. This made it a profitable option for operators. I think the focus on fuel efficiency was a key factor in its popularity.
Tata Motors had invested heavily in the Pantnagar plant, where the Magic Iris CNG was manufactured, with over Rs. 1000 crores invested along with additional investments from vendors. This plant was known for its state-of-the-art facilities and integrated vendor park.
Pricing details and changes
The Tata Magic Iris CNG is priced competitively in the Indian market. The ex-showroom price for the Magic Iris CNG is approximately Rs. 2.45 lakhs in Delhi, which is marginally higher than the regular version. When considering on-road prices, you can expect to add around Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 70,000 for registration, insurance, and other costs, bringing the total to around Rs. 3.15 lakhs to Rs. 3.35 lakhs. This pricing makes the Magic Iris CNG an attractive option for those looking for an affordable and efficient commercial passenger vehicle. The cost-effectiveness, combined with its fuel efficiency and low maintenance, makes it a viable choice for taxi services and small transportation businesses.
Fuel efficiency information
The mileage of the Tata Magic Iris CNG is one of its standout features. With an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 32 kmkg and a range of 220 kms, this vehicle offers excellent fuel economy. This is particularly beneficial for commercial use, where running costs are a significant factor. The larger 53-litre CNG cylinder also ensures that you need to refill less frequently, adding to the overall efficiency and reducing operational costs.
