About

General information and overview

The 2025 Maruti Ignis represents my perspective as a distinctly capable entry-level crossover hatchback that bridges the gap between practical city cars and quasi-SUV styling. Underneath its quirky, SUV-inspired exterior sits a peppy 1.2-liter four-cylinder petrol engine producing 83 bhp and 113 Nm of torque, paired with either a five-speed manual or AMT transmission. The 180mm ground clearance combined with the car's light body makes it supremely nimble through congested traffic, while the intelligent cabin layout maximizes space for five passengers with genuine usability. I find the ride quality particularly impressive for city commutes, absorbing bumps with a composed demeanor despite the lightweight construction. Available through Maruti Nexa dealerships across India, this vehicle has recently gained traction with a 33 percent month-on-month sales increase in July 2025, validating its appeal to practical buyers. The inclusion of modern features like hill-hold assist, hill descent control on higher variants, and adequate safety equipment makes it surprisingly well-equipped for the price point. Whether navigating through semi-urban rough roads or tackling daily city commutes, the Ignis proves to be a versatile companion that doesn't compromise on practicality or driving engagement.

The Maruti Nexa Ignis is a compact premium hatchback designed for urban mobility with a splash of individuality. Powered by a 1.2-liter K-series petrol engine producing 83 bhp and 113 Nm torque, it comes with both 5-speed manual and AMT transmissions to suit different driving preferences. Its quirky yet practical design, with SUV-inspired styling and 180 mm ground clearance, makes it stand out in city traffic and handle mild rough roads comfortably. The cabin offers seating for five and focuses on smart space utilization rather than luxury. Standard safety equipment includes dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, electronic stability program, and hill-hold assist on AMT variants, ensuring basic occupant protection. The vehicle is light, agile, and built for easy maneuvering in congested Indian streets. Nexa Ignis comes in multiple trims, providing varied feature sets to cater to different buyer needs while maintaining fuel efficiency and low running costs. It is ideal for buyers seeking a reliable, economical, and characterful car for daily commute and occasional weekend drives within Indian city and semi-urban contexts.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

After spending considerable time evaluating the 2025 Maruti Ignis, I find it to be a refreshingly honest approach to urban mobility that refuses to follow market trends. This car focuses on doing the fundamentals exceptionally well rather than chasing unnecessary features. The 1.2-liter K-Series petrol engine delivers eager performance with a genuine sense of liveliness on city streets, and the steering feels responsive without being over-assisted. What impresses me most is how Maruti has maintained the Ignis's core identity while making it practical for Indian families. The structure feels robust for its lightweight design, and the ride quality proves composed on both smooth roads and potholed urban stretches. The dual airbags, ABS, EBD, and electronic stability program across variants demonstrate a commitment to safety that shouldn't be underestimated in this segment. However, I must acknowledge that the polarizing design won't appeal to everyone, and the lightweight construction means highway stability can be affected when larger vehicles pass nearby. For someone prioritizing simplicity, efficiency, and genuine driving enjoyment over technological extravagance, the Ignis remains a compelling choice. It's not trying to be something it's not, and that authenticity is precisely its strength.
December 5, 2025
The Maruti Nexa Ignis stands out as a fun, quirky, and practical city car that excels in urban driving conditions. Its 1.2-liter petrol engine delivers a peppy yet refined performance that suits stop-and-go traffic and tight city roads effortlessly. The light body ensures nimble handling while keeping ride comfort composed for daily commutes. While the design might polarize opinions due to its unique styling, the Ignis remains a confident choice for buyers looking for a hassle-free, economical vehicle with decent safety features like dual airbags, ABS with EBD, and hill-hold assist in AMT variants. It is not a high-tech gadget but prioritizes simplicity, fuel efficiency, and space utility. The Ignis is ideal for drivers who appreciate a compact footprint without compromising on some SUV-like ground clearance and practicality. However, its relatively basic suspension setup may feel stiff on rough rural roads or long highway journeys. Overall, the Ignis strikes a rare balance between style, efficiency, and everyday comfort, making it a smart option in its segment for city dwellers.

Latest Updates

Recent news and announcements

In June 2024, Maruti Suzuki decreased the prices of the Ignis by up to Rs. 5,000, making the ex-showroom prices range from Rs. 5.84 lakh to Rs. 8.06 lakh. This price revision is aimed at making the car more competitive in the market. I believe this small price drop can make a significant difference in buyer decisions.
June 12, 2024
Maruti Suzuki has introduced the Ignis Radiance Edition, which has lowered the starting price of the Ignis to Rs. 5.49 lakh. This new edition is part of Marutis strategy to make the car more affordable and attractive to buyers. I think this move will definitely boost sales, especially during the festive season.
June 12, 2024
The Maruti Ignis competes with other hatchbacks like the Citroen C3, Hyundai Exter, Maruti Celerio, and Tata Tiago. Despite the competition, the Ignis has managed to hold its ground with its unique design and feature-packed offerings. I think the Igniss blend of style and functionality makes it a strong contender in its segment.
February 28, 2024
Maruti Suzuki is offering significant discounts on the Ignis, with savings of up to Rs. 64,000, as part of their promotional offers. This move is aimed at boosting sales and clearing inventory. I believe such discounts can be very attractive to potential buyers looking for a good deal.
June 17, 2023
Maruti Suzuki has upgraded its entire fleet, including the Ignis, to comply with BS6 Phase 2 norms. The updated Ignis retains its 1.2-litre petrol engine, producing 82bhp and 113Nm of torque, and continues to offer both manual and automatic transmission options. This upgrade ensures the car meets the latest emission standards without compromising on performance.

Pricing details and changes

The 2025 Maruti Ignis is positioned competitively across four variants, with ex-showroom prices ranging from Rs. 5.8 lakh for the Sigma trim to Rs. 8.1 lakh for the top-spec Alpha AMT variant. When calculating on-road costs in Delhi, the base model sits around Rs. 6.39 lakh while the petrol automatic variant reaches approximately Rs. 7.08 lakh, accounting for registration, insurance, and other statutory charges. I believe Maruti has priced this vehicle sensibly given what you're getting, particularly with the inclusion of six airbags as standard across the range and the efficient 1.2-liter engine. The Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 69,000 price reduction effective from September 22, 2025, due to new GST norms makes this an even more attractive proposition. For buyers operating within a tight budget, the Sigma and Delta variants offer remarkable value, while those seeking additional comfort can step up to Zeta or Alpha without breaking the bank. I'd recommend comparing the total cost of ownership rather than just the purchase price, as the Ignis's fuel efficiency translates into significantly lower running costs over time. The pricing strategy demonstrates Maruti's understanding of the Indian market's budget-conscious nature while maintaining adequate margins across the lineup.
December 5, 2025
In India, the Maruti Nexa Ignis petrol variants are priced competitively, starting from around ₹5.35 lakh ex-showroom for the base Sigma manual variant and going up to approximately ₹8.1 lakh ex-showroom for the top-end Alpha AMT trim. On-road prices typically range from about ₹6.3 lakh to ₹8.7 lakh depending on the city due to varying taxes and insurance costs. This pricing positions the Ignis well against other premium hatchbacks and entry-level crossovers, as it offers a blend of features and fuel efficiency that justifies the slight premium over regular hatchbacks. Maruti’s Nexa branding adds a touch of exclusivity, attracting buyers who want a stylish, well-built small car but can’t stretch to mid-sized SUVs. Its value lies in the combination of low maintenance, decent feature list, and efficient engine. For budget-conscious urban buyers looking for a reliable daily driver with some personality, the Ignis offers compelling value, though buyers seeking more plush interiors or advanced safety features might find better deals in slightly higher segments.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

In my assessment of real-world mileage, the Ignis consistently delivers between 20-21 kilometers per liter during highway driving and approximately 14-15 kilometers per liter in dense city traffic, though your actual figures will depend on driving habits and road conditions. The lightweight construction of 862 kilograms plays a crucial role in this efficiency, allowing the 1.2-liter engine to work intelligently without excessive strain. From a running cost perspective, this translates into measurable savings over competitors in the same segment, making it an excellent choice if fuel economy is your primary concern.
December 5, 2025
The Maruti Ignis offers a strong mileage claim of about 20.9 km/l under standard test conditions, which translates into practical real-world fuel efficiency of around 18-20 km/l on highways and 14-16 km/l in city conditions. This balance is achieved thanks to its light body and efficient 1.2-liter petrol engine. Given India’s fuel costs and city traffic conditions, the Ignis delivers economical running costs, which is a major factor for daily commuters and buyers focused on minimizing fuel expenses. This mileage performance makes it a practical choice for budget-friendly ownership without compromising on performance.

Introduction

Launched in India in January 2017, the Maruti Ignis made its entry into the market as a replacement for the brand’s other hatchback, the Ritz. Sold through the company’s premium car platform, NEXA, the Ignis carved its own place in Indian car lovers’ hearts and was sold by over 20K units in just the first four months. To keep its attraction maintained and offer the BS6-compliant engine, Maruti Suzuki introduced the facelift model of the Ignis in February 2020 in the Indian car market. Let’s discuss in detail all the specs and details of the car to offer you the required information.

Maruti Nexa Ignis Design and Style

2023 Maruti Suzuki Ignis has a compact appearance. The hatchback's current form and style, on the other hand, provide an attractive overall stance to the car. It gets an impressive front fascia with a front grill having four U-shaped chrome elements and a Suzuki logo in the middle. To offer the car SUVish look, the manufacturer has added a faux skid plate. In addition, the halogen fog lamps and LED projector headlamps boast chrome surroundings for enhanced looks.

Maruti NEXA Ignis Colour Options

Turning to the side profile, the Ignis sports boxy design, plastic side cladding, blacked-out pillars, and ORVMs integrated indicators on the sides. On the rear side, the Ignis gets D-shaped halogen tail lamps, roof spoiler, rear reflectors and faux silver skid plate. As for body dimensions, the hatch is 3700mm in length, 1690mm in width, 1595mm in height with a wheelbase of 2435mm.

Maruti Ignis Engine and Gearbox

Powering the new Maruti Nexa Ignis is a 1197cc, 4-cylinder, 1.2-L VVT petrol engine that is capable of churning out 81.8 HP @ 6000 rpm and 113 Nm @ 4200 rpm and is combined with a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission.

Maruti Nexa Ignis Interior, Instrument Cluster & Boot Space

When it comes to the inside, the new Maruti Ignis boasts a fairly futuristic appearance. A horizontal vent runs from one side of the dash to the other, defining the line between the two competing interior tones and creating seamlessness and uniformity for the dashboard design. The absence of a centre console unit is one of the interior's distinguishing aspects of the Maruti Ignis. Instead, it has a two-tiered design, with a floating touchscreen on top and a separate panel for climate management. The touchscreen, on the other hand, is replaced with a 2DIN music system on the less expensive models.

The front seating arrangement in the car is pretty comfy, while the rear seat is good for two people sitting there. The legroom for the rear seat occupants is just okay for taller occupants, while the headroom is decent. In terms of functionality, the Ignis has large bottle holders in the front doors, tiny bottle holders in the rear doors, a pair of medium-sized cubby-holes, and two cup holders in the front. The glove compartment, on the other hand, isn't very large. Overall, it's a decent cabin with plenty of storage space.

The instrument console gets two analogue dials and digital MID offering information like open door warning, fuel efficiency, range, average speed, drive, gear, trip meter, fuel gauge, and language change option. There will be 260 litres of boot space for carrying luggage, which can be expanded further thanks to 60:40 splittable rear seats.

Maruti Ignis Brakes, Suspension & Tyres

As for braking duties in the new Maruti Ignis, these are assigned to disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. While the suspension is handled by MacPherson Strut at the front and Torsion Beam at the rear. The hatchback rides on 15-inch alloy wheels which are clothed with 175/65 size tyres. However, the spare wheel in all variants is a steel wheel.

Maruti Nexa Ignis Key Features

2023 Ignis comes loaded with sophisticated features like Smartplay Studio, steering mounted controls, push start/stop button, MID with TFT screen, automatic climate control, tilt steering, auto ORVM and safety features including dual front airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchorages, ABS with EBD, pedestrian protection compliance and seat belt pre-tensioners with force limiters to name a few. It is available with extra safety features such as a rear parking sensor with a camera, a rear defogger and wiper, and a security alarm on higher models.

Maruti Ignis Top Speed, Acceleration & Mileage

The new Maruti Ignis offers a top speed of 175 kmph and accelerates from 0-100 kmph within 12.26 seconds. The Maruti Ignis manual and automatic versions both have the same stated mileage of 20.89 kmpl. In city driving, the Ignis is expected to return approximately 14-15 kmpl.

Maruti Ignis Variants & Colour Options

2023 Maruti Ignis comes in four variants called Sigma, Delta, Zeta and Alpha. While the offered colour scheme comprises nine lively colour options named NEXA Blue, Glistening Grey, Silky Silver, Pearl Arctic White, Lucent Orange, Turquoise Blue, Lucent Orange with Black Roof, Nexa Blue with Silver Roof and Nexa Blue with Black Roof.

Ex-showroom Price & On-Road Price

The ex-showroom price for the Ignis Sigma MT starts at Rs 5.35 lakh and goes up to Rs 7.72 lakh for the Ignis Alpha AMT. Understanding the difference between ex-showroom and on-road pricing, the ex-showroom price of a car is the asking price that excludes the cost of road tax, insurance, and registration. But on the other side, the on-road price includes all of the previously stated costs as well as insurance, registration, a one-time road tax, an extended warranty, and all vehicle accessories. It is essential to know that in our country, on-road prices vary greatly from state to state.

Maruti Ignis Competitors

In the Indian car market, the new Maruti Nexa Ignis directly competes with Tata Tiago, Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, Honda Jazz, Volkswagen Polo, Mahindra KUV100 NXT and its own sibling Maruti Baleno.

Verdict - Should You Buy Maruti Nexa Ignis or not?

2023 Maruti Ignis is an eccentric and unorthodox hatchback with all the makings of a successful product. The unique elements may appeal to certain individuals while alienating others, but this does not diminish the fact that it is a fantastic product altogether. A person wanting to buy a hatchback in this price bracket should certainly consider this car since it checks all the boxes and will set you apart from the pack.
