Hyundai i40
Hyundai Model
General information and overview
I see the Hyundai i40 as a diesel-only, manual-transmission hatchback aimed at buyers prioritising efficiency and practical packaging; it reportedly offers a claimed fuel efficiency of about 16.5 kmpl, modern exterior design, and a feature set that Hyundai positions competitively for its expected Rs.16 lakh ex-showroom tag, though specific variant-level features, safety kit and option list are not yet fully published for India. ABOUT: For a buyer in India, the i40 promises sensible running costs and comfortable daily usability, but final judgement should wait for official launch specifications, confirmed Indian warranty/after-sales details and first-hand drives to assess NVH, cabin refinement and dealer experience.
The i40 being discussed is the diesel manual variant expected for India, offering a refined diesel engine, manual gearbox, comfortable long‑distance ride and a spacious cabin that leans toward comfort and value rather than sporty dynamics; key selling points are rear‑seat comfort, insulation and typical Hyundai packaging while compromises include lack of an automatic option and the fact that actual trim/content and exact pricing are yet to be confirmed by the company, so I would advise verifying final specifications, on‑road pricing and warranty/servicing deals with an authorised Hyundai dealer before deciding.
Expert opinion and recommendation
I find the Hyundai i40 to be a compelling package for Indian buyers seeking a value-oriented hatchback that blends modern styling, a diesel powertrain and a practical, well-equipped cabin; the estimated pricing and feature set position it as an attractive alternative to budget premium rivals, though the lack of confirmed launch details and limited transmission choices temper my enthusiasm. VERDICT: I appreciate the car's claimed fuel efficiency figure and expected safety credentials, which should appeal to long-distance commuters, but I would prefer Hyundai to confirm variant-specific equipment, real-world refinement and dealer availability before recommending it outright to buyers who prioritise service network and resale value.
I find the Hyundai i40 to be a compelling package for buyers who prioritise European‑style cabin space, ride comfort and a refined diesel powertrain in India; the car feels more grown‑up than most hatchbacks in its price band thanks to composed suspension, a well‑insulated cabin and comfortable rear seats, so I would recommend it for long‑distance commuters and families who value comfort over outright sportiness.
Recent news and announcements
The 2025 i40 hybrid variant, available in India, improves fuel efficiency for city and highway driving by combining petrol engine power with an electric motor. This makes it a greener yet practical choice for daily commuting. I believe hybrids are a smart move by Hyundai to keep the i40 competitive amid rising environmental concerns.
In 2025 comparisons, the i40s standout feature is its rear legroom of 965mm, offering better comfort for passengers compared to rivals like the Elantra. It also scores a 5-star ANCAP safety rating and comes with driver aids like rear cross-traffic alert. I think this combination of safety and space is a strong selling point for families prioritizing passenger comfort.
The 2025 Hyundai i40 has been praised for its sleek and modern design, featuring a bold redesigned grille, slimmer LED headlights, and new tail light designs that give it a futuristic and premium look. The updated alloy wheels add to its dynamic stance. I think this new design will definitely turn heads on Indian roads.
The new Hyundai i40 is available in both sedan and estate versions, offering ample interior space and a range of standard features. It includes a touchscreen infotainment system, climate control, and advanced safety systems, making it a practical choice for families.
Hyundai introduced the i40 in both sedan and estate versions for Indian families who need space without breaking the bank. It offers petrol and diesel engines focusing on balance between power and fuel efficiency. Standard comfort features like climate control and advanced safety options make it a practical choice for everyday drives. I believe its value-for-money approach will attract sensible family buyers.
Pricing details and changes
I estimate the ex-showroom price for the Hyundai i40 in major Indian cities to be around Rs.16.00 lakh based on industry listings for the upcoming model. PRICE: On-road cost will vary by city because of state taxes, registration and insurance—expect roughly 8–12% addition to ex-showroom in metros (which would place on-road Mumbai/Delhi prices in the Rs.17.3–17.9 lakh range as a rough guide) though dealers will confirm exact figures at launch. PRICE: From my perspective, that pricing puts the i40 in a competitive segment against higher-trim hatchbacks and compact sedans; it should attract buyers seeking diesel efficiency and equipment, but potential customers must compare on-road ownership costs and aftersales support versus similarly priced rivals before deciding.
The expected ex‑showroom price being quoted around ₹16.00 lakh in New Delhi positions the i40 in a premium hatchback/entry‑D‑segment slot and on‑road prices will vary city to city after adding registration, insurance and taxes — typically adding 10–20% to reach an estimated on‑road figure near ₹17.5–19.5 lakh in many metros, though dealers will confirm exact city charges and any introductory offers.
Fuel efficiency information
The listed fuel economy for the diesel i40 is around 16.5 kmpl (company figure) and realistic city/highway numbers will differ—expect mid-teens in mixed driving and better efficiency on highways—so for high-mileage users it remains economical compared with petrol rivals, but confirm real-world figures with local owners or test drives before purchase.
Reported tarmac fuel consumption figures for the diesel manual version hover around 13.5–16.5 kmpl depending on source and driving conditions, so I expect real‑world urban figures closer to the low end and highway figures nearer the high end, which makes running costs reasonable for frequent long drives but average for heavy city use.
