BMW M4
General information and overview
The BMW M4 Competition is a 4-seater luxury sports coupe powered by a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six petrol engine producing over 500 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque. It features an advanced M xDrive all-wheel-drive system with an automatic transmission that boosts acceleration from 0-100 km/h to approximately 3.4 seconds and electronically limits top speed to 250 km/h. The design is aggressive and aerodynamic, characterized by a large distinctive grille and sharp body lines that improve both aesthetics and performance. Inside, it boasts a driver-centric cabin with premium materials, advanced infotainment, and M-specific displays to keep you connected and informed. The ride quality balances sportiness with surprising comfort for its segment, making it usable both on the track and daily commutes. Ground clearance is low at about 120mm, reflecting its performance focus. Overall, it combines thrilling speed, precise handling, and luxury refinement, appealing to discerning buyers in India who seek an exclusive, track-capable yet practical sports coupe.
The BMW M4 Competition is a four-seat performance coupe that sits between the M3 and M5 in BMW's lineup, representing a masterclass in how to combine extreme performance with usable engineering. The heart of this machine is a 2993cc twin-turbocharged inline-six engine producing 510bhp and 650Nm of torque, enabling that explosive 3.4-3.5 second zero to 100kmph acceleration with an electronically limited top speed of 250kmph. The M xDrive all-wheel-drive system paired with intelligent suspension and braking dynamics makes this car handle with surgical precision, whether you're attacking a mountain road or navigating city traffic. Inside, the driver-focused cockpit features premium materials, M-specific displays, and comfortable sports seats designed to keep you engaged during spirited driving. The aggressive exterior design with sharp lines and an unmissable grille announces its performance credentials loudly, while aerodynamic enhancements ensure that pace translates into genuine capability. The 120mm ground clearance does limit its approach angles, and the middle rear seat is genuinely unusable, making this a practical four-seater for adults rather than a five-seater, which is honestly fine given the car's purpose and performance orientation.
Expert opinion and recommendation
The BMW M4 Competition stands out as a supreme high-performance sports car that brilliantly blends blistering speed with sophisticated engineering. With its potent 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six producing over 500hp, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just about 3.4 seconds, delivering a thrilling driving experience that few rivals can match. The car’s M xDrive all-wheel-drive system and finely tuned chassis provide razor-sharp handling and exceptional cornering grip, making it equally adept on winding roads or city streets. Although its aggressive styling can be polarizing, the interior offers a plush, driver-focused cockpit with premium materials and the latest tech, striking a good balance between comfort and sportiness. The exhaust note enhances the emotional connection to the driving experience, and the quality of build is top-notch. While the price is on the higher side even within the luxury segment, the M4 Competition justifies it with sheer performance, engineering finesse, and exclusivity, making it a worthy proposition for enthusiasts seeking a track-ready yet usable daily driver in India.
The BMW M4 Competition represents a thrilling intersection of raw performance and engineering excellence that I find genuinely impressive in India's luxury sports car segment. After examining the car's capabilities, what strikes me most is how it manages to deliver supercar-level acceleration and handling dynamics while maintaining a level of everyday usability that many competitors simply cannot match. The 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six engine producing 510bhp feels potent without being unnecessarily brutal, and the 3.4-3.5 second sprint to 100kmph is genuinely quick enough to turn heads on any road. I appreciate the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system's intelligence, which provides confidence-inspiring grip in various conditions while still allowing for spirited driving when you want it. The aggressive styling with that bold grille certainly divides opinion, but the aerodynamic refinements aren't just for show. However, I must acknowledge that the polarising design language and the tight rear seating arrangement aren't for everyone, and the relatively high service costs do add to the ownership equation. For enthusiasts willing to embrace what this car represents, it's a genuinely capable machine that justifies its premium positioning.
Recent news and announcements
BMW has announced that the 2024 M4 models will start arriving in the U.S. this month. The new models come with significant tech upgrades, including the new BMW Curved Display and the latest iDrive 8 operating system. Additionally, the M4 features updated trim options, such as the new Aluminum Rhombicle in Anthracite and an optional SensaTec upholstered dashboard. I believe these updates will enhance the overall driving experience and appeal of the M4.
The 2024 BMW M4 has been updated with a new interior design, featuring a single curved display that houses both a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment screen. This change streamlines the dashboard by removing physical climate controls and integrating them into the touchscreen. The latest iDrive 8 software and an upgraded BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant voice-command function are also included. I think this modernization will make the M4 feel more contemporary and user-friendly.
The 2024 BMW M4 retains its controversial front grille design but has been refreshed with new headlights and taillights featuring laser diode technology. The cars styling has been enhanced with new M forged light-alloy wheels and updated trim options. Despite the polarizing grille, the M4s overall aesthetic remains intense and elegant. I believe the new design elements will attract both old and new fans of the M4.
For the 2024 model year, the BMW M4s engine has not seen a significant power boost, but it still packs a punch with its 473-hp base model and 503-hp Competition model. The Competition xDrive model adds all-wheel drive, making it a versatile option for various driving conditions. The M4 also features multiple performance upgrades, including fade-resistant M carbon-ceramic brakes and the M Drive Professional package for track enthusiasts. I think the variety of configurations will appeal to a wide range of drivers.
BMW has confirmed that the 2024 M4 will have a starting price of $77,995 for the coupe, $81,935 for the Competition coupe, and $92,935 for the convertible. These prices reflect the various upgrades and new features, including the advanced infotainment system and improved interior materials. I think the pricing is competitive given the performance and luxury offered by the M4.
Pricing details and changes
The BMW M4 Competition is priced in India approximately between ₹1.8 crore to ₹2.2 crore ex-showroom depending on the variant and dealer location. On-road prices in metropolitan areas like Delhi can exceed ₹1.78 crore due to taxes, insurance, and other charges. This places the M4 squarely in the ultra-premium segment, competing with similarly priced performance cars and luxury sports coupes. While the sticker shock is considerable, the M4 commands this premium for its advanced powertrain, technology, and dynamic capabilities. Buyers should consider the value proposition beyond price—this car offers not just speed but also the prestige, build quality, and engineering sophistication BMW is known for. Running and maintenance costs are also higher, reflecting the bespoke nature of the model. For those passionate about performance and exclusivity, the M4’s price is justified though it demands a serious budget commitment upfront to enjoy its full potential on Indian roads.
The BMW M4 Competition commands an ex-showroom price starting at Rs 1.52 crore in India, with variants extending up to Rs 2.21 crore depending on specification and local taxation changes, while on-road pricing typically sits between Rs 1.78 crore to Rs 2.2 crore depending on your city and dealer negotiations. From a financial perspective, I find this pricing positioned at the premium end of the sports car spectrum, but it's worth contextualizing what you're getting for that investment. The pricing reflects not just the engineering prowess but also the exclusivity factor and BMW's service network assurance in India. I'd recommend getting on-road quotes from authorized BMW dealers in your city as prices can vary significantly, and negotiation room exists even at this luxury level. The monthly EMI starts around Rs 5,000 for a 48-month tenure at standard interest rates, though your actual EMI will depend on your down payment and the specific interest rate negotiated with your financier. I must be candid that this is a significant investment, and the running costs including insurance, fuel, and service should factor heavily into your buying decision if ownership sustainability is a concern.
Fuel efficiency information
The M4 Competition delivers an official ARAI mileage of around 9.7 km/l, which is typical for a high-output performance car in India. Considering its powerful 503 bhp engine and performance-oriented tuning, this mileage is reasonable. Buyers focusing heavily on running costs may find the fuel efficiency challenging, but the trade-off is exceptional power and driving dynamics. Efficient driving can help manage fuel consumption somewhat, but this car mainly suits enthusiasts prioritizing performance over economy.
I must be straightforward about the M4 Competition's fuel efficiency, as it achieves approximately 10 kmpl in real-world conditions, which I consider respectable for a high-performance 510bhp machine but undeniably thirsty compared to everyday vehicles. The ARAI rating sits around 10.12 kmpl, aligning with user-reported figures, meaning you're looking at substantial fuel costs given current petrol prices in India. If your primary concern is minimizing running costs, this car demands a certain financial commitment that extends beyond the purchase price. However, I'd argue that for those buying this car, fuel economy shouldn't be the deciding factor, and if it is, you might want to reconsider this particular vehicle segment altogether.
