Volkswagen Compact SUV Programme Approved for India, Report Says

Volkswagen has reportedly approved a new sub-four-metre SUV programme for India. The upcoming model is expected to share its basic architecture with the Skoda Kylaq while receiving its own exterior design, cabin treatment and brand positioning.

The programme is reported to carry an investment of about €25 million. A 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine is expected, paired with a manual gearbox and a planned eight-speed automatic option. Volkswagen has not announced a product name, design or launch date.

Why the Kylaq connection matters

Skoda’s Kylaq demonstrates how the group’s India platform can be adapted for the highly competitive sub-four-metre segment. Sharing the underlying engineering can reduce programme cost and development time, while Volkswagen can still differentiate the vehicle through styling, feature strategy and tuning.

The model would sit below the Taigun and give Volkswagen an entry in one of India’s highest-volume SUV categories. That creates a clearer price ladder for the brand and increases the potential customer base.

Expected powertrain plan

The familiar 1.0 TSI is the logical engine for the programme. Reports point to a manual transmission and an eight-speed automatic, the latter being a notable change from the six-speed torque-converter used across several current applications.

Final gearbox sourcing, output and variant availability have not been confirmed. Those details should be treated as programme reporting rather than showroom specification.

What Volkswagen still needs to reveal

There is no confirmed name, design, equipment list, price range or launch timeline. A shared base does not mean the Volkswagen will simply be a rebadged Kylaq; the group typically uses brand-specific exterior and interior execution to create separation.

Approval is the important first step. The commercial result will depend on how quickly Volkswagen can bring the model to market and whether its pricing and feature mix are competitive against India’s established compact SUVs.
