Toyota's First Electric SUV in India: Launching in the Second Half of 2025

Toyota is set to revolutionize the Indian automotive market with the launch of its first electric vehicle (EV), the production version of the Urban SUV concept, in the second half of 2025. Toyota is making a big step forward with this move as it enters the Indian market, which is now dominated by the Maruti eVX, for electric vehicles. The Urban SUV concept which was unveiled late last year, showcases Toyota's commitment to sustainable and innovative transportation solutions. Toyota wants to meet the rising demand from Indian consumers for environmentally friendly cars by introducing this midsize electric SUV.

Design and Features

With its sleek and contemporary form, the Toyota Urban SUV concept embodies Toyota's intentions for its upcoming line of electric vehicles. With dimensions closely mirroring those of the Maruti eVX, the Urban SUV is expected to offer a similar spacious and comfortable interior, catering to the needs of Indian families. Its aggressive and raw look is enhanced by the external design's jagged surfaces, C-shaped LED daytime running lights, and simple front bumper. The SUV's distinctive upright shape and flared wheel arches enhance its allure for off-road driving. The rear design, particularly the doors and glasshouse bears a resemblance to the eVX although the Urban SUV adds its unique touch with rear door handles integrated into the C-pillar.

Platform and Powertrain

Underpinning the Toyota Urban SUV and the Maruti eVX is the 27PL skateboard platform, a testament to the collaboration between Toyota and Suzuki in developing a shared architecture for their EVs. This platform will be heavily localized and manufactured at Suzuki's Gujarat facility, catering to both the domestic and export markets. The Urban SUV is expected to offer two battery pack options: a 60kWh unit providing an impressive range of about 550km and a smaller 48kWh pack with an estimated range of 400km. Toyota's commitment to adaptability is evident in its plan to offer front-wheel drive (FWD) and dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) variants which ensure that the Urban SUV can suit a wide range of driving conditions and tastes.

Competition and Pricing

Upon its launch, the Toyota Urban SUV will enter a competitive segment, going head-to-head with established players such as the Hyundai Creta EV, Tata Curvv EV, and its sibling, the Maruti eVX. Toyota's foray into the electric SUV market is expected to be strategically priced to offer a compelling alternative to prospective buyers. The brand aims to leverage its reputation for reliability and quality to attract customers looking for an environmentally friendly and technologically advanced vehicle.
