Toyota Fortuner 2024: Introducing the 48V Hybrid with Advanced ADAS

The 2024 Toyota Fortuner has welcomed a new 48V mild-hybrid (MHEV) variant to its lineup, enhancing performance and fuel efficiency. This addition is part of Toyota's broader strategy to integrate hybrid technology across its global portfolio. Already launched in South Africa, this variant is expected to make its way to India and other markets later in the year.

Enhanced Performance

The new Fortuner MHEV variant harnesses a 2.8-litre diesel engine, renowned for its robust output of 204 PS and 500 Nm. With the integration of the mild hybrid system, it gains an additional 16 PS and 42 Nm, which promises to refine the SUV’s driving dynamics substantially. Equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission, the Fortuner MHEV is available in both 2WD and 4WD configurations, offering a more dynamic driving experience.

Improved Fuel Efficiency

Toyota reports that the Fortuner MHEV is about 5% more fuel-efficient than its standard diesel counterpart, which typically delivers around 14 km/L. This enhancement is attributed to the hybrid system's energy recuperation and assistance, which reduces the overall fuel consumption, especially beneficial in long-term use.

Advanced Safety Features

In line with its technological upgrades, the Fortuner MHEV variant boasts enhanced safety features, including a 360-degree camera and Toyota’s Safety Sense ADAS suite. This suite includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, high beam assist, and forward collision warning, ensuring a safer driving experience.

Interior and Exterior Updates

While the exterior remains largely unchanged, the Fortuner MHEV maintains its modern appeal, similar to the Fortuner Legender in India. It features vibrant color options in South Africa, offering a fresh aesthetic to choose from. Inside, the cabin receives minor cosmetic updates to enhance its appeal and comfort.

Launch Prospects in India

Given the increasing competition and demand within the Indian SUV market, the introduction of the Fortuner MHEV could provide Toyota with a significant advantage. The combination of enhanced performance, improved fuel efficiency, and advanced safety features makes it a compelling upgrade over the standard models. Toyota’s plans for India also include the introduction of an all-electric SUV by 2025, further expanding its commitment to offering a diverse range of eco-friendly vehicles.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Fortuner MHEV as Toyota prepares for its official launch in India and other markets, promising a blend of traditional robustness with modern hybrid efficiency.
