In the past few years, there has been a significant increase in the interest of new buyers for off-roader lifestyle SUVs, particularly after the launch of the second-generation Mahindra Thar (3-door version). Last year, this segment was further enhanced with the introduction of the Maruti Jimny, featuring a 5-door layout and a practical boot. Additionally, there is the more utilitarian option of the Force Gurkha (also a 3-door SUV). However, there will soon be a new addition to this category – the Mahindra Thar 5-door, which will directly compete with these two capable off-roaders. Here are five key reasons why you might want to wait for the extended Thar:
Design Upgrades
The Thar 5-door will be an extension of the 3-door model, featuring a longer wheelbase and two extra doors to offer a more practical and family-friendly design. Although it will largely resemble the existing Thar, spy shots have revealed some design modifications, such as circular LED headlights and a new grille. It is also anticipated to have a fixed metal top option, which is not currently available on the 3-door Thar.
A More Premium Cabin
While the dashboard layout will mostly stay the same as the 3-door Thar model, spy shots of the test mule suggest that the 5-door Thar will have larger displays (for the touchscreen infotainment unit and instrument cluster) and a new climate control panel. The most significant change inside could be a new cabin theme.
Additional Features
The Thar 5-door is expected to come with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment unit and a 10.25-inch fully digital driver's display, dual-zone AC with rear vents, a sunroof, and a rear center armrest. In terms of safety technology, the elongated Thar is likely to have six airbags, a 360-degree camera, and a reversing camera with front parking sensors.
Familiar Engines with Increased Outputs
Mahindra is likely to offer the long-wheelbase Thar with the same 2-litre turbo-petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines as the current 3-door model, but with potentially higher outputs. Both engine options will be available with 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions. The 5-door Thar could also come with options for both rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and 4-wheel-drive (4WD).
Expected Launch and Pricing
The Mahindra Thar 5-door is set to be unveiled in a market-ready form on August 15, 2024, and is expected to go on sale shortly thereafter. It is anticipated to have a starting price of Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom). This model will serve as a larger and more premium alternative to the Maruti Jimny and Force Gurkha 5-door.
