Tata Motors Achieves Sales Record – 1.3 Lakh CNG Cars in 24 Months

Tata Motors, a key player in the Indian automotive market, has reported the sale of over 1.3 lakh Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles in the last 24 months. The company holds the distinction of having the second-largest CNG portfolio in the country trailing only behind Maruti Suzuki.

Industry-Leading CNG Technology

Tata Motors recently introduced the Tiago and Tigor CNG Automatic Manual Transmission (AMT) cars, marking a significant milestone as the first-in-India CNG automatic cars. The company boasts industry-leading twin-cylinder CNG technology setting its CNG models apart in terms of usability and practicality.

Widest CNG Portfolio

Currently, Tata Motors offers four CNG models in its lineup, including Tiago, Tigor, Altroz, and Punch. All these models feature the brand’s proprietary twin-cylinder CNG kit, allowing customers to utilize a significant portion of the boot space. This is in contrast to other CNG cars in the market, which often sacrifice boot space due to single-cylinder CNG kits.

Shared Powertrain and Transmission

All four Tata CNG cars share the same 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine coupled with twin 30-litre CNG tanks. While the Altroz and Punch are equipped with a five-speed manual gearbox, the Tiago and Tigor come with a five-speed AMT unit. The company is expected to extend the AMT option to the former two models in the near future.

Upcoming Turbocharged Petrol CNG Car

Tata Motors showcased the CNG-powered Nexon SUV at the Bharat Mobility Show, and upon its launch, it will be the first turbocharged petrol CNG car in the Indian market, adding to the company’s diverse CNG portfolio.

CNG Market Growth

Amit Kamat, Chief Commercial Officer, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., expressed satisfaction with the growing acceptance of CNG vehicles. He highlighted Tata Motors' commitment to innovation, including twin-cylinder technology, high-end features and direct start in CNG. The company has experienced an impressive 67.9% growth in CNG sales in FY24 compared to the previous year.

Confidence in Sustainable Growth

With the introduction of the Tiago and Tigor CNG AMT models, Tata Motors aims to further enhance the demand for CNG vehicles, reinforcing its position as one of the top brands in the CNG market. The company is confident in sustaining its growth momentum in the passenger car segment.

Tata Motors continues to contribute significantly to the CNG vehicle market in India, providing customers with innovative and practical solutions for sustainable mobility.
