Tata Maintains the Edge Over Hyundai in February 2024 Auto Sales

In the ongoing battle for dominance in the Indian automotive market, Tata Motors has once again edged ahead of Hyundai in February 2024. Tata sold approximately 1,000 more units than Hyundai, securing the second spot on the brand-wise monthly sales chart. This marks the fourth time ever that Tata has surpassed Hyundai in monthly sales.

Sales Figures Breakdown

  • Tata Motors: Recorded a sale of 51,267 units in February 2024, witnessing a year-on-year (YoY) increase of nearly 20 percent. A significant contributor to Tata's sales was its electric vehicle (EV) range, with nearly 7,000 units sold, marking a 30 percent increase YoY.
  • Hyundai: Sold 50,201 units in February 2024, achieving a YoY increase of almost seven percent. The facelifted Creta was a major contributor, with over 15,000 units sold, the highest monthly sales figure for the model since its inception in 2015.

Factors Influencing Tata's Success

  • EV Leadership: Tata's position as the leader in the electric car segment in India has been a major factor in its success. Recent launches like the Punch EV and the facelifted Nexon EV have bolstered Tata's sales numbers.
  • Strong ICE Portfolio: Tata's internal combustion engine (ICE) portfolio, particularly the Nexon and Punch, continues to perform well, frequently featuring in the list of top 10 selling cars every month.

Hyundai's Performance

  • Popular Models: In addition to the Creta, Hyundai's Exter and Venue models have been consistent performers, averaging well over 5,000 units in month-on-month sales.

Future Outlook for Tata and Hyundai

  • Tata's Upcoming Launches: Tata is planning to expand its electric SUV offerings with the launch of the Curvv and Harrier EVs later in the year.
  • Hyundai's Launch Pipeline: Hyundai is gearing up for the launch of the Creta N Line on March 11, 2024, and is also expected to introduce the facelifted Alcazar and the Ioniq 6 in the Indian market.

Tata Motors' success in February 2024 is a testament to its growing prominence in the Indian automotive market, particularly in the EV segment. With both Tata and Hyundai expanding their production capacities and planning new launches, the competition between these two giants is expected to intensify further. Tata's broader range of mass-market SUV offerings may give it an edge in securing the second-placed spot in Indian monthly car sales in the future.
