Skoda Launches Naming Contest for Sub-4m SUV, Sales by March 2025

Skoda is gearing up to expand its presence in the Indian automotive market with the introduction of a new sub-4m SUV and its first electric vehicle (EV) for India. As part of the 'India 2.0' project, the Czech carmaker is set to enter the highly competitive sub-4m SUV segment, currently dominated by the Tata Nexon and Maruti Brezza.

A New Sub-4m SUV

The most exciting news from Skoda's latest announcement is the confirmation of a new sub-4m SUV, which is expected to be accessible priced. Slated for launch by March 2025, this upcoming SUV is likely to be based on the MQB-A0-IN platform, similar to the Kushaq compact SUV but adapted to fit the sub-4m category. Skoda has teased a design sketch, hinting at a muscular styling with a split headlamp setup.

The name for this new SUV is yet to be decided with Skoda shortlisting several options including Skoda Kariq, Skoda Kwiq, and Skoda Kyroq. The public will have a chance to recommend a new name through a poll adding to the anticipation surrounding the launch.

Skoda's First EV for India: The Enyaq iV

Skoda has also confirmed that its first EV for India will be the Enyaq iV, set to go on sale sometime in 2024. As a completely built-up unit (CBU) offering, the Skoda EV is expected to carry a price tag of around Rs 60 lakh (ex-showroom). While the exact specifications for the Indian market are yet to be disclosed, the Enyaq iV has already been undergoing testing in India since 2022.

Showcasing the Kushaq Explorer Edition

Alongside the big announcements, Skoda India showcased the Kushaq Explorer concept, featuring distinctive off-road design modifications and a matte green finish with orange highlights. The 1.5-liter turbo-petrol version of the small SUV serves as the basis for the Kushaq Explorer concept, which is unlikely to see the light of day as a commercial model. However, a special edition variant with less drastic visual modifications could be a possibility, similar to the Volkswagen Taigun Trail edition.

Skoda's Growing Presence in India

Skoda revealed that its cumulative sales in India crossed the 1-lakh mark for the last two consecutive years. Ahead of the new sub-4m SUV's launch in 2025, the carmaker has already increased its production capacity by around 30 percent. India has emerged as one of Skoda's top five global markets, with around 50 percent of Skoda cars manufactured outside the Czech Republic being made-in-India models.

Conclusion

Skoda's roadmap for India over the next couple of years promises to bring exciting new offerings to the market, including a feature-loaded sub-4m SUV and the brand's first EV, the Enyaq iV. With its commitment to expanding its presence in India Skoda is poised to cater to the evolving preferences of Indian consumers and further strengthen its position in the automotive industry.
