Renault Unveils Kardian SUV with New CMF Platform and 125 hp Turbo Petrol Engine

Renault has introduced a brand-new SUV called the Kardian with a particular focus on emerging markets. This compact SUV measures 4.12 meters in length, which places it slightly above the sub-4-meter subcompact SUV category. In India, Renault already covers the subcompact SUV segment with the Kiger.

Key Details about the Renault Kardian SUV

Renault has developed the Kardian using an entirely new CMF modular platform. While it shares some basic design elements with the Kiger it possesses a unique and distinctive profile. Split headlamps, top-mounted LED daytime running lights (DRLs), a large grille, and strong front and rear bumpers are a few of the vehicle's unique features. The side profile stands out with sporty 17-inch alloy wheels, thick body cladding, circular wheel arches, blacked-out pillars, body-colored door handles, functional roof rails, and a shark fin antenna. The rear of the vehicle showcases C-shaped tail lamps similar to the Kiger. The coupe-like sloping roofline is also reminiscent of the Kiger.

Inside the Kardian you will find a spacious, minimalist, and practical design, and the interior combines digital elements with traditional aesthetics to offer the best of both worlds. Rotating control dials, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system are some of the main highlights and the center console has a raised profile and features an e-shifter and electronic parking brake. Premium upholstery with contrast stitching, ambient lighting, a wireless charger, and remote keyless entry and start to promise an immersive experience for users. Safety is a top priority with a range of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) features including adaptive autopilot and automatic emergency braking. In total, there are 11 ADAS features available with the Renault Kardian SUV.

Renault's Kardian is powered by a new 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine that produces 125 horsepower and 220 Nm of torque. It comes with a 6-speed DCT automatic gearbox for smooth gear shifts and dynamic performance. These figures outperform the Kiger, which is equipped with a 1.0-liter turbo petrol engine producing 100 horsepower and 160 Nm of torque. The Kiger offers transmission choices including a 5-speed manual and CVT, with the CVT variant producing 152 Nm of torque.

Will the Renault Kardian SUV be available in India?

Given that Renault already offers the Kiger in India, it's unlikely that the new Kardian SUV will be launched in the Indian market. However, some of the other models built on the same platform may find their way to India. These models could be manufactured domestically for both the domestic and export markets. For example, the new Duster could potentially utilize the same CMF platform as the Kardian in the future. The next-generation Duster is set to make its global debut on November 29 and is expected to be launched in India in late 2024 or early 2025.
