MG Set to Launch All-New EV MPV and SUV in India

MG Motor is getting ready to refresh its range of electric vehicles (EVs) in India in an attempt to take a larger share of the mass-market industry. The JSW Group has provided financial support to the company. Two new EVs, a compact MPV and a tough SUV, both priced at Rs 15 lakh will be released by the business, both of which will be built on the E260. By taking this action MG is strategically attacking Tata Motors' dominance in the market with more reasonably priced and useful EV alternatives.

New MPV Based on Wuling Cloud EV

MG's upcoming MPV, built on the Wuling Cloud EV platform, is expected to hit the roads in India within the next year. This three-row MPV will offer a spacious interior and flexible seating arrangements serving both family and fleet usage. With a wheelbase of 2,700mm it is somewhat longer than the Renault Triber and slightly shorter than the Maruti Ertiga. Its length is around 4.3 meters. The three-row EV is designed not only for families but also for the fleet market. With the new MPV and SUV, MG hopes to close major gaps in its lineup and attract more customers in the Rs 15 lakh to Rs 20 lakh price range which is fast becoming an attractive sweet spot in the market.

Stylish SUV Inspired by Baojun Yep Plus

After taking inspiration from rugged SUVs like the Maruti Jimny, MG's new SUV will be based on the Baojun Yep Plus platform. This SUV which has five doors appeals to both city people and off-road enthusiasts with its combination of off-road capability and urban usefulness. The SUV hopes to draw buyers looking for a flexible and reliable car by highlighting distinctive style and strong performance.

MG's Market Share and Future Plans

Despite holding a modest 1% market share in India, MG Motor sells around 5,000 units per month, with EVs contributing 10-20% of total sales. Optimistic about the growth of the EV segment, MG aims to achieve a 50% share of its total sales from EVs in the coming years. To support this growth, MG is considering local assembly of batteries and plans to expand its manufacturing capacity to over 3 lakh units per annum.

Partnership with JSW Group

In a strategic move, SAIC MG Motor India's parent company entered into a joint move with the JSW Group in November 2023. In order to strengthen local sourcing, upgrade the facilities used for charging, and offer a wider selection of vehicles with the focus on green mobility, JSW has acquired a 35% share in MG's Indian operations. With this agreement MG hopes to strengthen its market position in India and quicken its growth objectives.

MG Motor has shown its commitment to sustainable transportation in India through its ambitious ambitions to update its EV line. With its cutting-edge products and clever partnerships MG is well-positioned to profit from the nation's growing EV market. The company hopes to set the standard for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future for the Indian automotive sector as it keeps growing both its product line and its manufacturing capability.
