The Mahindra Thar has been a consistently strong performer for the Indian SUV manufacturer with monthly deliveries averaging over 5,700 units. As previously reported, Mahindra still has an inventory backlog of approximately 71,000 units of the Thar, including the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) version. However, the company has significantly increased production resulting in a considerable reduction in waiting times.

The Thar 4x2 (or Thar RWD) diesel variant currently has a waiting period of up to 10-11 months. In contrast, the waiting period for a petrol Thar 4x2 is 5-6 months, depending on the chosen variant. These waiting times represent a substantial reduction from the 15-16 month waiting periods reported in October 2023.
The 1.5-liter diesel Thar 4x2 engine has 118 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque, and it is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. On the other hand, the petrol version utilizes the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine from the Thar 4x4, generating 152hp and 300Nm of torque, and is available exclusively with a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Prices for the Thar 4x2 range from Rs 11.25 lakh to Rs 13.99 lakh.

Buyers interested in any variant of the Thar 4x4 now face a waiting period of just 2-3 months for delivery. This significant reduction from the previous 5-6 month waiting period reflects Mahindra's successful efforts to ramp up production.
Two engine choices are available for the Thar 4x4: the 2.0-liter turbo-petrol medallion engine with 152 horsepower and the 2.2-liter diesel engine with 132 horsepower. Unlike the 2WD variants, the 4x4 models come with optional 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions and feature a manual-shift 4x4 transfer case. Select variants also include a manual-locking differential.
The prices for the Mahindra Thar 4x4 petrol variant currently range from Rs 14.30 lakh to Rs 16.60 lakh while the diesel versions are priced between Rs 15.00 lakh and Rs 17.20 lakh.
