Mahindra plans to introduce several new electric vehicles (EVs) to its inventory in the upcoming years. The dynamic nature of these prospective EVs is being reflected in the fashionable and succinct names that the business is currently finalizing.

Mahindra's New EV Naming Strategy

Mahindra has opted to use a variation of its existing naming convention for its upcoming EVs. The newly trademarked names - XUV 7XO, XUV 5XO, XUV 3XO, and XUV 1XO - correspond to the electric versions of the XUV700, XUV500, XUV300, and a new small SUV EV, respectively. These names are likely to be assigned to the production versions of the XUV EV concepts showcased earlier.

The "X" in the new names signifies their electric nature, while the "O" ending maintains Mahindra's tradition of vehicle naming (e.g., Bolero, Scorpio, Marazzo). These names are designed to be short, memorable, and have a high recall value, similar to their ICE counterparts.

Expected Features of Mahindra's New EVs

The styling of the XUV700 and XUV300 EV models will share several elements with their ICE versions, except for a closed-off grille. The feature list is also expected to be similar to the EVs potentially supporting additional tech features.

Mahindra's born-electric range will include several segment-first features, such as a triple-screen dashboard spotted in a test mule of the XUV.e9. This arrangement improves the appearance of the cabin and makes a symmetrical design conceivable, which is not achievable with the standard dual-screen configuration found in many SUVs.

The XUV 7XO and 5XO may feature this new triple-screen dash, while the XUV 3XO and X1O might continue with a single touchscreen infotainment system. Larger SUVs could also offer enhanced connectivity and safety features, with an expanded ADAS kit for the XUV 7XO and 5XO. The XUV 3XO and 1XO might include essential ADAS features like blind spot detection, traffic sign recognition, and driver drowsiness detection.

Expected Range and Battery Specifications

The upcoming Mahindra EVs will be based on the new INGLO architecture, with battery packs ranging from 60 kWh to 80 kWh for the larger SUVs. The XUV 7XO and 5XO could offer both single-motor and dual-motor AWD options, while the XUV 3XO and 1XO are likely to have only a single electric motor. Although detailed specs are yet to be revealed the INGLO platform promises improvements in performance, drive comfort, and versatility.

The XUV 7XO, 5XO, and XUV 3XO are expected to have a range of over 400-450 km, while the XUV1XO might offer a range of around 200-250 km. As charging infrastructure continues to develop, the emphasis is shifting towards faster recharging rather than extremely high ranges. Mahindra is still investigating novel battery technologies though which might eventually provide even longer ranges.
