Citroen might postpone the launch of its innovative sedan, the C3X, originally set for mid-2024, as the company revisits its plans based on feedback from stakeholders. The C3X offers a unique blend of sedan, coupe, and crossover features, boasting a coupe-like roofline, notchback design (similar to the Skoda Superb), and a crossover-inspired touch with elevated ride height and rugged body cladding.
The C3X, characterized by a distinctive coupe-like roofline, a notchback resembling models like the Skoda Superb, and a crossover-inspired design featuring a raised ride height and robust body cladding, is positioned as an "SUV-coupe" to carve a distinctive niche in its segment.
Built on the C-Cubed platform, shared with models such as the C3, eC3, and C3 Aircross, the C3X utilizes shared components, powertrains, and equipment to optimize production costs. However, the recent launch of the C3 Aircross faced challenges with sales due to cost-cutting measures and omitted features. Responding to feedback from customers, media, and other stakeholders, Citroen is now considering additional equipment for the C3X to rectify some of the shortcomings of the C3 Aircross. This adjustment may lead to a delay in the C3X's market introduction.
While the specific enhancements to the C3X's equipment remain undisclosed, there is an expectation that it will address features absent in the C3 Aircross, such as electric folding mirrors, automatic climate control, cruise control, wireless charging, LED headlamps, push-button start, keyless entry, ventilated front seats, and a sunroof – features readily available in competitor offerings.
Interior
Under the hood, the C3X will be equipped with Citroen's well-established 110hp, 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission also used in the C3 and C3 Aircross. Citroen is contemplating offering a 6-speed automatic transmission option from the launch, with the torque converter unit making its debut in the C3 and C3 Aircross in the first quarter of 2024. Additionally, there are plans for an electric version of the C3X, potentially hitting the market in 2025.
Rivals
In terms of competition, the Citroen C3X will contend with midsize sedans such as the Hyundai Verna, Volkswagen Virtus, Skoda Slavia, and Honda City. However, its coupe-like design and elevated driving stance could help it establish a unique position in the market. Interestingly, Tata is set to introduce the Curvv crossover, featuring coupe-like styling, around mid-2024, directly challenging the C3X. Given Tata's current product lineup, the expectation is for the Curvv to be generously equipped and the question remains whether Citroen will incorporate premium features into the C3X to match up against the competition. The answer to this awaits as the launch date approaches.
