In December 2023, Mahindra, a prominent SUV manufacturer in India, continued its dominance in mid-size SUV sales, maintaining its stronghold in the market. The 17,236 units sold by Mahindra accounted for a significant 70.02% market share within this segment. The primary contributor to this success was the Scorpio model which demonstrated immense popularity and garnered an extremely loyal fan base.

Scorpio's Dominance

The Scorpio emerged as the top-selling model for Mahindra in the mid-size SUV segment. With 11,355 units sold in December 2023, the Scorpio commanded a substantial 46.13% share of the market. Impressively, Scorpio exhibited a remarkable 62.14% Year-on-Year (YoY) growth. However, it experienced a slight month-on-month (MoM) decline of 6.81%. Despite this, the overall performance reflected a gain of 4,352 units YoY, while the MoM loss stood at 830 units.

It's noteworthy that Scorpio sales encompass both Scorpio Classic and Scorpio N, although Mahindra does not provide individual sales numbers for these variants. The classification of Scorpio Classic in the compact SUV segment akin to the Jeep Compass, adds complexity to the distinctions between SUV segments.

XUV700's Contribution

Securing the second position, the Mahindra XUV700 recorded sales of 5,881 units in December 2023. This represented a 4.59% YoY growth but experienced an 18.56% MoM decline compared to the 7,221 units sold in November 2023. XUV700 accounted for a notable 23.89% share of the mid-size SUV segment.

  • MG Hector Twins: The MG Hector twins, including the Standard Hector and Hector Plus, sold 2,184 units, exhibiting a robust 38.47% YoY growth and a modest 2.54% MoM growth.
  • Tata's Flagship Brothers - Safari and Harrier: Tata Motors sold 3,507 mid-size SUVs, with the Safari registering a substantial 40.01% YoY growth. However, the Harrier experienced a considerable 34.02% YoY decline and a 39.64% MoM decline.
