Maruti Suzuki has discontinued the diesel variants of the Dzire, including the ZDi model, due to the implementation of BS6 emission norms. The company now offers the Dzire only with a 1.2-litre DualJet VVT petrol engine. This move marks the end of the 1.3-litre diesel engine that was known for its fuel efficiency. I think this change will impact buyers who were loyal to the diesel version for its mileage.

The 2017 Maruti Dzire ZDi came with significant updates, including a new lightweight Heartect platform, which reduced the weight by 85-95kg. This led to improved fuel efficiency, with the diesel model claiming a mileage of 28.4 kmpl. The new model also featured LED projector headlamps, a 7.0-inch touchscreen system, and automatic climate control. I believe these updates made the Dzire a strong contender in the sub-4 meter sedan segment.

In 2015, Maruti Suzuki updated the Swift Dzire with minor but notable changes, including a bold new chrome grille, blackened-out swept-back headlights, and redesigned bumpers with circular fog lamps. The top variant also got features like keyless entry, Bluetooth telephony, and parking sensors. Despite these upgrades, the absence of a leather-wrapped steering wheel and reversing camera was noticeable. I think these changes helped keep the Dzire competitive, but more frequent updates would be necessary to stay ahead.

The 2015 Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire ZDi was praised for being Indias most fuel-efficient diesel car, with the 1.3-litre DDiS turbodiesel engine producing 74bhp and 190Nm of torque. This model also introduced the 5-speed automated manual transmission (AMT) option, enhancing convenience for drivers. I believe the combination of fuel efficiency and the AMT made it a popular choice among buyers.

The first generation of the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, which included the ZDi model, was known for its reliability and fuel efficiency. The diesel variant, powered by a Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre engine, was particularly popular. However, this generation was eventually phased out for general buyers in 2012, although it continued for fleet operators until later. I think this generation set a strong foundation for the Dzires reputation in the Indian market.
