In 2025, is the FZ6R's lack of modern electronics a drawback, or a benefit?
10 January 2025 08:27
The electronics keep the price down, both for the purchase and the maintenance. For riders on a budget but who still want a bike that can do the job, it's a great option.
How does the FZ6R compare to dedicated tourers when used as a long distance tourer?

The FZ6R is a great budget tourer with a few mods like a taller windscreen and some soft luggage. I have done 1000+ mile trips no problem.

Weekend trips are okay, but for serious touring you want a dedicated bike. The FZ6R is not a comfortable bike or one with very many features for really long hauls.

Mine was great; I toured Europe on mine. It’s light enough to be fun in the twisties, but stable on the highway. Just need to pack light.

It’s no way near a real touring bike. It isn't designed for all day comfort and there aren't luggage options.

It's all about expectations. For a budget tourer, if you don’t mind more frequent stops and packing as little as possible, the FZ6R can be a great tourer.

I’d prefer to tour on an FZ6R than a big, heavy touring bike. You can actually enjoy the twisty roads and it's more fun to ride.

Long distance touring is a deal breaker without cruise control and heated grips. If you want to use the FZ6R for trips, stick to sport touring.

My FZ6R is more comfortable with a Corbin seat and some bar risers than my friend's dedicated tourer. Setting it up right is all.
Is the FZ6R a good ride jack for a customization project?

Absolutely! The FZ6R is a blank canvas. I’ve seen everything from cafe racers to streetfighters built on this platform. Sky's the limit!

It’s nice and easy to work on. There’s plenty of aftermarket support and the design is simple enough to easily do DIY mods. Really great bike to learn wrenching on.

Meh, it's alright. It can do some cool stuff, but at the end of the day its still an FZ6R. Better platforms out there for custom builds.

Best thing about modding the FZ6R is you can make it into whatever kind of bike you want. Sport tourer? Check. Commuter? Check. Weekend canyon carver? Check.

The bike cost more than I put into mods, and I wouldn't change a thing. It’s like I have a custom bike made just for me.

It’s honestly better off not touching it. The design was good by Yamaha and most mods just make it worse. Instead, spend your money on gear and gas.

Subtle, tasteful mods are what the FZ6R is all about. It’s really something you can really enhance the strengths of without going overboard. But it’s all about finding that balance.

The FZ6R's inline-four is smoother, more refined than any 650 twin. A more pleasant ride especially for longer trips.
How does the FZ6R stack up against today’s 650cc twins in terms of real world rideability?

They have 650 twins that have way better low end torque. They make them much easier to ride in the city and also more fun on twisty roads. Feeling flat, the FZ6R is.
How does the FZ6R stack up against today’s 650cc twins in terms of real world rideability?

I have ridden both and to be honest the FZ6R is more versatile. Around town it's smooth, but there's still a rush at the top end when you want it. Best of both worlds.
