Watch out for steering head bearings. But they wear out much faster than you’d expect, especially if you ride in the rain a lot.
Is the FZ1 Fazer better as a sport bike or as a tourer?

This is definitely a sport bike with touring capabilities. It feels too rowdy to be a relaxed tourer, but is comfortable enough to spend long days in the saddle.

Mine is great for touring and it's what I use mine for. You can go for days on it if you throw some soft bags on it. The wind protection is also decent fairing.

It's a perfect 50/50 split. That’s what I like about it so much. With the same bike you can do track days and cross country trips.

It's too heavy as a sport bike, and the suspension is too soft. It’s not a tourer, it doesn’t have luggage options and the fuel range could be better. It's stuck in the middle.

For me, it's a better tourer. It’s great for eating up miles thanks to upright ergonomics and a smooth engine. A pure sport bike is not as sharp in the twisties.

It's all based on how you configured it. Using some suspension work and sticky tires, it can run with sport bikes. A taller windscreen and bags make a great tourer.

I would say it’s 60% sport bike and 40% tourer. It's not quite as sporty as a VFR but not as squashed as a GSX R.

Is the Yamaha FZ1 Fazer a good first bike for a new rider?

Absolutely not. A new rider doesn’t need a bike like the FZ1. You first need to learn proper throttle control and body positioning on something smaller first.

I got started on an FZ1 and it worked just fine. It’s totally doable as long as you’re mature and respect the power. It’s pretty forgiving in the upright ergonomics.
Is the Yamaha FZ1 Fazer a good first bike for a new rider?

It depends on the rider. You might be okay if you’re older, cautious, and have good self control. However, for most new riders, it's too much power to handle safely until he has learned.
