If you’re mature and have good self control, it can be. It has different riding modes, so if you start in B mode it tames it down quite a bit.

I did fine on an FZ-09, but I’m probably the exception. For most new riders, it's definitely not ideal. It can get away from you real quick.

No way, man. Start with an FZ-07 or something like it. In inexperienced hands the FZ 09 is just begging for trouble.

It depends on the rider. If you are older, cautious and have taken a good riding course, you may be okay. For most new riders, though, it's too much bike.

It's doable, but not recommended. At low RPMs, the bike's power is manageable, but you can get in over your head pretty easily.

Terrible idea. The FZ 09 is a handful for even experienced riders sometimes. Work your way up, and learn the basics on something smaller.

If you have a good head on your shoulders and get proper training, it can be done. Why make learning harder on yourself? But there are better starter options out there.

Absolutely still relevant. The engine is bulletproof on the FZ-07 and it’s a timeless design. Not all of us need or want all the latest electronic gizmos.

No, it’s pretty outdated now. There’s no rider aids and that basic suspension setup just doesn't cut it anymore. There are much better options.

Yamaha really needs to update this bike, it’s still a great bike, but it’s getting old. A little more power, better suspension, and some basic traction control would be a long way.

I’d say it’s still relevant for beginners or as a second bike but experienced riders will likely want something more advanced by now.

The chassis needs work, the engine is still competitive. They'd be right back at the top of the class if Yamaha updated the suspension and brakes.

Honest to God, it's been left behind. For not much more money, bikes such as the Triumph Trident and Aprilia Tuono 660 offer so much more.

Who cares about relevance? A cheap to run, easy to maintain fun, reliable bike. It’s never going out of style.

If you make it relevant, it’s relevant. You can get a few choice mods to bring it up to modern standards, and still save money over buying new.

For everyday riding, the FZ-07 is way better. It's lighter, more fuel efficient and you can actually use the power on the street without going to jail.

The FZ-09 is the better choice, no way. On the highway, the extra power makes riding a breeze, and it’s not that much harder around town.

I’ve had both and I’d choose FZ-07 for daily use. The 09 is fun, but it’s almost too much bike for stop and go traffic.
