Will the XSR300 handle like modern sport bikes?

Yamaha XSR300 is a retro styled motorcycle with modern underpinnings, it shares its chassis and engine with the MT-03 naked bike. It raises some interesting questions as to how it behaves. Although it’s old school in appearance, it is thoroughly modern in foundation. How will this mix of old and new translate to the real world? Can the XSR300 run with the pure sport bikes in the twisties, or will its retro styling and ergonomics prevent her from keeping up? So let’s speculate on how this neo-retro machine might behave when you’re pushing it to the edge of its abilities, when we consider weight distribution, suspension setup, and even tire choices.

It should probably handle like a dream. The XSR300 could be even better in the corners with some tweaks, the MT-03 chassis is solid.

Handling? Who cares! Looks, baby, that’s all it’s about. I wouldn't want a sport bike if I wanted pure performance.

I think it will surprise a lot of people. These days retro bikes can be proper handlers. Check out the Triumph Street Twin, it’s no slouch in the twisties.

That’s a 300cc bike, let’s be real. No matter how good it handles, it’s not going to keep up with a proper sport bike.

With the upright riding position, it actually might have an advantage in tight, technical roads. Less aggressive ergonomics can sometimes give you more confidence.

I worry the retro styling may make the thing too heavy. It may make it less agile than more focused sport bikes.

It’s not just about the chassis. It will make a huge difference in tire choice. With good rubber from Yamaha, it could be a corner carver.
